in the fields of Comparative Literature 

and Translation Studies: 

The space-age in philosophy, politics and literature 

is the theme of Sonne, Mond und Ferne. 

Contributions on aliens and science fiction, the 

Cold War and the space race as well as Black 

Holes are supplemented by an interview with 

Sigmund Jähn, the first German in space. 

Le paradigme chrétien autour de 1800 examines 

Chateaubriand’s works on Christianity and 

demonstrates a possible conceptual agreement 

with German contemporaries like Schleiermacher,

of the same Zeitgeist.

Nomadic Literature 

ees Nooteboom (born 1933) is a writer 

of fiction, poetry and travel literature. 

Translated into at least thirty-four languages, 

his work raises important questions about 

the mobility of literary texts and invites a 

new theoretical approach, for to read Nooteboom 

straightforwardly as a Dutch author 

would be to do him an injustice. In this book, 

his fiction and travel writing are discussed 

on the basis of his English oeuvre, while the 

chapter on his poetry moves between Dutch 

and English editions. The first part of the 

study reflects on texts crossing boundaries 

and the ways in which literary theory and 

history have dealt with them. The author 

then brings nomadic philosophy to bear on 

translation studies, considering translation 

as the process through which a literary work 

is welcomed into a new culture. The second 

Efterpi Mitsi is an Associate Professor 

in English Literature and Culture at the National 

and Kapodistrian University of Athens, 

with publications on early modern and 

travel literature. 

Christina Dokou is Assistant Professor 

of American Literature and Culture at the National 

and Kapodistrian University of Athens. 

Her areas of interest, on which she has 

published articles and anthology chapters, 

include comparative literature, American 

folklore, comics and gender studies. 

Stamatina Dimakopoulou is Assistant 

Professor in American Literature and Culture 

at the National and Kapodistrian University 

of Athens, with publications in the 

field of modernist studies.

themes and preoccupations are themselves 

nomadic, with their philosophical treatment 

of the subjective experiences of death, writing, 

love, sex and crisis as opportunities for 

becoming and self-exploration. Nooteboom’s 

imaginative worlds are constructed in language 

that is playful, laconic, meditative, 

witty and yet, especially in the poetry, deadly 

serious. 

Jane Fenoulhet is Professor of Dutch 

Studies at University College London. She 

works on modern literature in Dutch, literary 

translation and language pedagogy. Her 

recent books include Making the Personal 

Political: Dutch Women Writers 1919-1970 

(2007) and Mobility and Localisation in Language 

Learning (2010, co-edited with Cristina 

Ros i Solé).

Michael Gratzke is Senior Lecturer in German 

at the University of St Andrews. He has 

published monographs on masochism and heroism 

and is currently working on representations 

of love in the twenty-first century. 

Margaret-Anne Hutton is Chair of 

French and Director of the Institute for Contemporary 

and Comparative Literature at the 

University of St Andrews. She has published 

widely on representations of World War II and 

on contemporary French fiction. She is currently 

working on concepts of the contemporary 

canon. 

Claire Whitehead is Senior Lecturer in 

Russian at the University of St Andrews. She 

has published a monograph and edited volume 

on the genre of the fantastic and is currently 

working on a second monograph dedicated

he articles collected in this volume are 

written by researchers in contemporary 

Quebec literature and in Scandinavian and Finnish 

literature. There are three different thematic 

starting points. The first one is the question 

of performativity. What kinds of performative 

acts (linguistic, ethnic, sexual, etc.) are placed 

at the centre in the contemporary novel? Meaningful 

conflicts is the second one. Instead of 

studying the question of the possible assimilation 

of the (im)migrant into majority culture, 

should one rather start by studying conflicts as 

they occur today? Third, there is creolization. If 

the world is creolized, this means for example 

that the local will be part of the global and that 

the global will become part of the local.

range of contemporary literary scandals 

in order to identify the cultural and literary 

anxieties revealed by controversial 

works. It explores how scandal predominantly 

emerges in relation to texts which offer challenging 

representations concerning children, 

women, sexuality, religion and authenticity, 

and how literary controversies bring to the 

surface a series of concerns about the complex 

construction of identity, history and reality. 

Including works such as J.K. Rowling’s 

main issues in Beckett criticism by focusing on 

a key aspect of Beckett’s work throughout his 

long career: silence. Chesney links Beckett’s language 

and silence back to his predecessors, especially 

Joyce and Proust – laterally to contemporary 

movements of minimalism in the sister arts 

and theoretically in in-depth discussions of Blanchot 

and Adorno. By doing so, Chesney addresses 

how Beckett’s works remain true, to the end, to 

a minimalist impulse that is essentially modernist 

or late modernist without giving over to the 

rising dominant of postmodernism. Chesney delineates 

a sigetics – a discourse of silence whose 

main strategies in Beckett are reticence and ellipsis 

– and through studies of Godot, Endgame, 

Krapp’s Last Tape, Happy Days, the Trilogy, Company, 

and other works, teases out of Beckett’s 

minimal aesthetics a Beckettian minimal ethics. 

In brief glimmers in his texts Beckett provides 

proleptic hints at reconciliation and the 

possibility of ethical life that are neither theological 

nor mystical, but that minimally hold to an 

alternate rationality from that of the reified world 

of exchange and catastrophe. 

Duncan McColl Chesney is Associate Professor 

of Comparative Literature in the Department 

of Foreign Languages and Literatures at 

the National Taiwan University in Taipei. He 

holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from 

Yale University and has published on various 

literary, cinematic, and film theoretical topics 

including pieces on Proust, Faulkner, Joyce, 

Coetzee, and Visconti.

Muguraş Constantinescu, lauréate du 

Prix Critique de l’Institut International Charles 

Perrault en 1997, enseigne la littérature française, 

le conte d’auteur et la traduction littéraire 

à l’Université « Ştefan cel Mare » de Suceava. Elle 

y dirige la revue de traductologie Atelier de traduction 

et le Centre de recherche Inter Litteras. 

Elle a publié des articles et des ouvrages sur la 

littérature de jeunesse et la traductologie ainsi 

que de nombreuses traductions. 

es théories de la littérature se sont volontiers 

approprié les problématiques de la 

distinction. On s’intéressera à deux d’entre elles 

s’illustrant dans le domaine de la littérature de 

jeunesse. Dans le premier cas la question de la 

différenciation sexuelle s’incarne dans le corps 

du récit dont elle devient le sujet explicite ou 

latent (renvoyant aux gender studies) ; dans le 

second c’est la possibilité plus générale de la classification 

des récits qui devient l’objet de l’analyse 

(introduisant une critique générique par 

les « mauvais genres »). L’objet du présent volume 

est de s’inscrire en porte-à-faux avec des 

catalogages encore trop prégnants pour ne pas 

être remis en cause. On verra comment des fictions 

pour enfants et adolescent-e-s peuvent à 

la fois mettre en scène des moments particuliers 

de la construction d’une identité de genre 

(sexuel ou rhétorique) et la transgresser en explorant 

des modalités nouvelles de partition 

(sociale et/ou esthétique). Ce sera aussi l’occasion 

de tisser des correspondances d’une partie 

à l’autre du volume : comment, par exemple, 

filles et garçons fréquentent les genres littéraires, 

ou encore comment la question des identités

par des chercheurs en littérature québécoise 

contemporaine et en littérature scandinave 

et finlandaise d’aujourd’hui. Il y a trois 

points de départs thématiques. Le premier 

est la performativité. Quels types d’actes performatifs 

(linguistique, ethnique, sexuel, 

etc.) sont mis au centre dans le roman contemporain 

? Le conflit signifiant est le deuxième 

point de départ. Au lieu d’étudier l’assimilation 

de l’(im)migrant dans la culture majoritaire, 

faudrait-il plutôt étudier les conflits 

tels que ceux-ci se manifestent aujourd’hui ? 

Troisièmement, il y a la créolisation. Si le 

monde se créolise, cela veut dire, entre autres, 

que le local fera partie du global et que le global, 

à son tour, fera partie du local.

À du christianisme romantique, cette étude 

décrit les prédispositions et attitudes religieuses 

de Chateaubriand à deux moments 

décisifs de son parcours intellectuel et spirituel 

: l’exil en Angleterre et l’Essai sur les révolutions 

(1797), puis le retour en France et le 

Génie du christianisme (1802). 

L’analyse met en évidence les principes 

sur lesquels les positions de Chateaubriand 

sont établies et, pour y parvenir, fait appel 

au bagage théologique, historico-culturel et 

philologique qu’elles comportent. Cette application 

analytico-déductive a permis de 

configurer la mise en œuvre d’une certaine 

conscience chrétienne, les dispositions chrétiennes

Ces résultats ont été confrontés à ce qui 

s’est manifesté, à la même période et dans le 

même domaine de préoccupations, dans l’espace 

allemand. Un réseau de similitudes est 

apparu entre l’apologiste français et d’autres 

romantiques : Schleiermacher, Hölderlin et 

Novalis. Tous semblent, en effet, participer 

d’un même Zeitgeist et traduire une forme 

mentale appartenant à un même paradigme 

intellectuel.

sobre la intertextualidad en la escritura 

de Hélène Cixous y, de forma particular sobre 

una de sus prácticas: la reescritura. Las 

voces que nutren la escritura de Cixous conforman 

un universo tan rico como diverso e 

inabarcable en su totalidad. Este ensayo se 

adentra en este universo a partir de la reescritura 

cixousiana de distintos mitos bíblicos 

y clásicos. El Cantar de los Cantares, el Génesis, 

las figuras femeninas de Electra, Deméter, 

Clitemnestra y Core, las voces de otros 

escritores como Rousseau, Kleist, Clarice Lispector, 

la de pintores como Rembrandt, Füssli 

entre otros, conforman este Cuerpo de Reescritura 

de las ficciones narrativas de Hélène 

Cixous. Otro de los fenómenos intertextuales 

en el que la autora de este libro se adentra, 

es en el proceso de autorreescritura. Como 

hilo conductor de esta práctica escritural en 

la obra de Cixous, la voz de Clarice Lispector 

nos desvela cómo se desarrolla el proceso de 

creación literaria de la escritora ante su obra. 

Pues, Clarice no es únicamente la voz que 

acompaña la pluma de Cixous, es también 

personaje dentro de un nuevo texto, metatexto 

del texto en gestación. 

Amelia Peral es doctora en filología francesa 

y profesora de lengua y literatura francesa 

en la Universidad de Alicante. Especialista 

en literatura francesa y estudios de género, 

ha publicado diversos artículos sobre 

la escritura de mujeres en Francia a partir de 

los años 70 y especialmente sobre Hélène 

Cixous. Es directora del grupo de investigación 

interuniversitario MIDEL (Memoria e 

Identidades Literarias y Culturales) de la Universidad 

de Alicante, sus investigaciones también 

se centran en la literatura del Holocausto

del Coriolanus come opera politica 

aperta, indaga un corpus di adattamenti del 

testo, appartenenti alla cultura tedesca, sottolineando 

il loro essere, al contempo, atti 

estetici e atti politici, fortemente implicati e 

funzionanti nei relativi contesti storici, culturali 

e sociali. Il termine ad quem di tale indagine 

è il 1951, anno in cui Bertolt Brecht iniziò 

la sua nota riscrittura dell’opera shakespeariana. 

La ricerca − di natura comparatistica, 

interculturale e interdisciplinare – riconosce 

nel Coriolanus un’estetica dell’ambiguità, 

della pluralità e dell’indefinitezza, che permette 

di spiegare la peculiare ricezione del 

testo, oltremodo ricca di adattamenti e riscritture, 

volte a correggere o confermare, 

ridefinire o stravolgere il modo in cui la vicenda 

era stata raccontata precedentemente 

e le funzioni conferite alle relative narrazioni, 

nei contesti storico-sociali di appartenenza. 

I risultati ottenuti portano a ridefinire 

i confini del campo culturale costituito 

dall’opera di Shakespeare e invitano ad una 

moderna riflessione sull’uso politico della 

storia e della sua trasmissione, anche attraverso 

il teatro. 

Maria Elisa Montironi ha conseguito 

il Dottorato di ricerca in Studi interculturali 

europei presso l’Università di Urbino. Si è occupata

Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. He is 

the current European Secretary of the International 

Comparative Literature Association (ICLA). 

Sylvie Vranckx is a Research Fellow with 

the National Fund for Scientific Research-Belgium. 

A PhD candidate at the Université Libre

his collection of essays stems from the 

conference ‘Nineteenth-Century Literature 

and Aesthetics’, which was held at the University 

of Milan in 2006 and organised by the 

editors of this volume. The interface between 

word and image covered in these essays embraces 

the fields of literature, architecture, 

painting, photography, music and art criticism. 

The authors stress the role of aesthetics in a 

number of contexts ranging from the early 

1830s to the fin de siècle and beyond, as far as 

the last influences of Victorian taste on the 

early years of the twentieth century. 

During the nineteenth century the ancient 

interaction between literature and aesthetics 

was challenged and criticised by Martineau, 

Rossetti, Ruskin, Pater, Wilde, Beardsley, Cameron 

and Carroll, among others: their awareness 

of the complexity of visual perception 

problematised the existing categories of realism, 

artistic conventions, discourse of description, 

translation and representation. 

The essays cover almost a century of debate 

between literature and aesthetics. They 

focus on the intersection of word and image 

by emphasising transgressions in art hierarchies,

ur current knowledge society, as exemplified 

in our universities, is booming. 

The socialization of knowledge production, 

along with the development of interand 

transdisciplinary research groupings within 

traditionally discipline-based teaching institutions 

is equally increasing, even to the 

extent, that new terminology is coined to 

better specify this cross-sector collaboration. 

One of these new concepts which have 

emerged within the framework of interdisciplinarity 

and transdisciplinarity is heterogenic 

cooperation. This concept describes 

the bringing together of knowledge from different 

sources and can be observed mainly 

when specialists are dependent on skills and 

knowledge which do not exist within the 

framework of their own scientific domain. 

The ultimate result of heterogenic cooperation 

will enlarge any cooperation by integrating 

partners from different domains, fostering 

collaboration in a common project with

his book investigates the English translations 

of Shen Congwen’s stories. Shen 

Congwen (1902–1988) is one of the most acclaimed 

writers in modern Chinese literature. 

His works have been translated into 

more than ten languages and his 44 stories 

count with 70 different English translations. 

Adopting a case study method within the 

framework of Descriptive Translation Studies, 

the author selects and compares the most 

translated stories, those with three or more 

translations, totalling fifteen translations 

from four stories. The analysis of the texts 

focuses on Shen’s narrative style – his narrative 

commentaries and his lyrical narrative 

mode – to see how his style was re-presented

his book addresses a gap in the study of 

audiovisual translation (AVT) carried out 

in minority languages by exploring the role 

played by translations appearing on the Basque 

Public Broadcasting Service in the promotion 

and development of the Basque language. Using 

the framework provided by descriptive translation 

studies, the author illustrates the sociocultural 

context of AVT in the Basque Country, 

focusing on the dubbing from English to Basque 

of television animation for children. 

The most innovative aspect of the book lies 

in its cultural and descriptive approach. Following 

a corpus-based descriptive methodology, 

the study establishes a set of criteria for a contextual 

and linguistic analysis that embraces 

both the cultural and linguistic dimensions of 

translation and allows source texts to be compared 

with their translated versions at the macroand 

micro-structural levels. The book uniquely 

offers a broad overview of the cultural context 

as well as a detailed analysis of the linguistic 

properties of the dubbed texts.

Like Man, Like Woman 

odern scholarship often discusses Roman 

women in terms of their difference 

from their male counterparts, frequently 

defining them as ‘other’. This book shows how 

Roman male writers at the turn of the first century 

actually described women as not so different 

from men: the same qualities and abilities 

pertaining to the domains of parenthood, 

intellect and morals are ascribed by writers to 

women as well as to men. There are two voices, 

however: a traditional, ideal voice and an individual, 

realistic voice. This creates a duality of 

representations of women, which recurs across 

literary genres and reflects a duality of mentality. 

How can we interpret the paradoxical 

information about Roman women given by 

the male-authored texts? How does this duality 

of mentality inform us about gender roles 

and gender hierarchy?

Frage der frühen semitischen Lehnwörter 

im Griechischen. Es untersucht ca. 

400 griechische Wörter auf einen möglichen 

semitischen Ursprung. Aus dieser Untersuchung 

ergibt sich, dass der von der mykenischen 

bis zum Ende der klassischen Zeit belegte 

griechische Wortschatz insgesamt 65 

Wörter mit plausiblen semitischen Etymologien 

umfasst. Hinzu kommen die Buchstabennamen 

phönizischer Herkunft und einige 

Wörter, die zwar ägyptischen oder iranischen 

Ursprungs sind, aber vermutlich 

durch Vermittlung einer semitischen Sprache 

übernommen wurden. Bei über 300 Wörtern 

erwiesen sich die in der Forschung vorgeschlagenen 

semitischen Etymologien dagegen 

als unhaltbar.

This is the first book devoted to the writings 

of Evgeny Popov (born 1946), a major 

and controversial figure in the late Soviet and 

post-Soviet literary landscape. The author 

uses a wide range of primary and secondary 

sources, many of them in Russian, alongside 

detailed analysis of the novels and stories 

themselves. The introduction charts the 

course of Popov’s personal and professional 

biography, including major turning points 

such as the Metropole affair of 1979. A chapter 

on critical contexts provides a clear account 

of the history of Popov’s reception. 

Other chapters focus on the first collection 

of short stories and the complexities of narrative 

voice, the concept of the ‘non-elucidatory 

principle’ at the heart of Popov’s poetics, 

and the short story cycles in Metropole 

and Catalogue, from the late 1970s and early

his collection of essays is a seminal contribution 

to the establishment of translation 

theory within the field of Russian literature 

and culture. It brings together the 

work of established academics and younger 

scholars from the United Kingdom, Russia, 

the United States, Sweden and France in an

that the introduction of any new text 

into a host culture should always be considered 

in conjunction with adjustments to prevailing 

conventions within that culture. The

literary translation in Russia from the eighteenth

he Everyday of Memory explores manifestations 

of the communist past in 

the everyday lives of Eastern Europeans today. 

Representing a wide range of disciplines 

including cultural studies, film studies, urban 

studies, sociology, media, literature and 

art, the contributors to this book question 

the myth of a homogeneous Eastern European 

identity (as opposed to its historical 

Western counterpart). At the same time, they 

insist that those who experienced communism 

have a ‘right to remember’, and that 

their memories offer an alternative to the 

project of globalizing capitalism. 

The volume presents a critique of the current 

withdrawal of Eastern European politics 

from discussion of the communist past, in 

which the latter tends to be regarded as an obstacle 

to the neoliberal transition to democracy. 

As the book’s microstudies of the everyday 

life of memory show, communism has 

never been isolated from its capitalist nemesis: 

the two systems have been intertwined in 

the post-Enlightenment interplay of the humanist 

ideals that underpin the modernist 

project. Through a close observation of the 

unconstrained ways in which memory works, 

this book offers an insight into the paradoxes 

of the two ideological powers which posited 

the subservient homo sovieticus against the 

civilized homo economicus. The book also invites 

debate about the contemporary relevance 

of the ideological polarization of communism 

and capitalism.

s the first of its kind, the present study 

of Ukrainian science fiction encompasses 

both the historical and thematic features 

of this genre. It contains a discussion 

of the representative and the most imaginative 

Ukrainian science fiction works published 

by writers residing in Ukraine and 

abroad. 

The initial part of the study focuses on 

the historical legacy of Ukrainian science fiction, 

with a special emphasis on the authors 

of the formative period and the émigré authors 

who wrote after the Second World War, 

but were totally ignored during the Soviet 

political hegemony. It is followed by an analysis 

of the impact of Soviet ideology on the 

science fiction that prevailed in Ukraine from 

the 1920s to the late 1950s. 

With the relaxation of political controls 

over literature, publications of Ukrainian science 

fiction after the 1960s were so numerous 

that it was not feasible to obtain and to 

examine all these items. However, the novels 

and stories that were utilized in this study 

do provide a representative sample of the 

themes that comprise the main thrust of 

Ukrainian science fiction from the early 1960s 

to the end of the 20th century. 

Walter Smyrniw is Professor Emeritus 

at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, 

Canada. He published numerous articles on 

nineteenth and twentieth-century Russian 

and Ukrainian literature in North American 

and European Slavic journals. He is the author 

of Ukrainian Prose Manual and Turgenev’s 

Early Works and co-editor of Studies in 

Honour of Louis Shein and Socialist Realism 

Revisited.

der europäischen Ukrainistik in diesem Buch

Slawistik für Deutschland und Europa, in

L’auteure analyse les relations entre le 

discours de l’émancipation et l’esthétique du 

roman, la signification des thèmes homosexuels 

ou encore les questions du langage et 

de la textualité du corps. Elle propose des interprétations 

créatives de textes, expliquant 

leur absence du canon littéraire officiel et les 

raisons du dénigrement de la valeur esthétique 

des œuvres des femmes qu’on « ne savait

in Chinese people’s daily use of 

the language, but their pragmatic and semantic 

functions are elusive as commonly recognised 

by Chinese linguists and teachers of 

Chinese as a foreign language. This book originates 

from an extensive and intensive empirical 

study of the Chinese modal particle a 

( 啊 ), one of the most frequently used modal 

particles in Mandarin Chinese. In order to 

capture all the uses and the underlying meanings 

of the particle, the author transcribed 

the first 20 episodes, about 20 hours in 

tions within a pre-existing grid, and not as 

temporal disappearances. In this way, the 

study reveals a key feature of some among 

the most influential schools of Indian thought. 

The sources are Kalpasūtra, Vyākaraṇa and 

Mīmāṃsā, three textual traditions which developed 

alongside each other, sharing – as 

the volume shows – common presuppositions 

and methodologies. The book will be 

of interest for Sanskritists, scholars of ritual 

exegesis and of the history of linguistics. 

Elisa Freschi is project-leader at the Austrian 

Academy of Sciences, Vienna. After a degree 

in Sanskrit and one in Philosophy, she 

has gained her PhD on Indian Philosophy, with 

a thesis on the Epistemology of Sacred Texts 

(2006). She works on themes of epistemology, 

linguistics and philosophy of religion. 

Tiziana Pontillo is Assistant Professor 

of Sanskrit at Cagliari University, Italy (since 

2002). She gained her PhD with a thesis on 

Pāṇini’s Zero-Morphology (2000) and has 

taught General Linguistics at Udine University 

(2001-2002). She is the author of more 

than 70 contributions, often included in the 

proceedings of international conferences.

Kewang ‘Expectations’, which yielded a 

corpus data of more than 142’000 Chinese 

characters with a total of 1829 instances of 

the particle all used in meaningful communicative 

situations. Within its context of use, 

every single occurrence of the particle was 

analysed in terms of its pragmatic and semantic 

contributions to the hosting utterance. 

Upon this basis the core meanings 

were identified which were seen as constituting 

the modal nature of the particle.

Publikationen zählen die Studie Cheng Ming: 

Richtigstellung der Bezeichnungen (1988), Antikchinesisches 

Kalenderwesen (2002) und Verwandtschaft 

und Gesellschaft im alten China: 

Begriffe, Strukturen und Prozesse (2006). Eine 

Gesamtübersetzung des Mèngzǐ (Mencius) ist 

in Vorbereitung. 

Wolfgang Behr, *1965 in Göttingen, promovierte 

1997 mit der Arbeit Reimende Bronzeinschriften 

und die Entstehung der chinesischen 

Endreimdichtung. Seine Forschungsinteressen 

gelten u.a. der Historischen Phonologie, Etymologie 

und Paläographie des Chinesischen 

sowie der Kulturgeschichte der Sprachwissenschaft 

im vormodernen China. Von 2003–2007 

war er Präsident der European Association of 

Chinese Linguistics und ist derzeit einer der 

Herausgeber der mehrbändigen Encyclopedia 

of Chinese Linguistics. Nach einer langjährigen 

Tätigkeit als Akademischer Rat an der Ruhr- 

Universität Bochum ist er seit 2008 Inhaber 

des Lehrstuhls für Sinologie (Traditionelles

his study focussing on narratives about 

female knights-errant (nüxia) cuts along 

a thematic line in Chinese literary history, and 

thus seeks to contribute to understanding and 

appreciation mainly in three fields of inquiry: 

the formation of narrative subgenre; the literary 

representation of gender; and the particularities 

of the Chinese knight-errantry narrative. 

It traces the processes of textual collecting, 

editing, rewriting, and intertextual referencing 

by which narratives about female knights-errant 

were invented as, and forged into, a thematic 

sub-genre. The narratives about a character 

type who boldly transgresses gender boundaries 

are studied as an exemplary case for a 

general inquiry into the subversive significance 

of images of gender-bending strong female characters 

in the Chinese narrative tradition. Finally, 

the present study investigates into representations 

of the practice of Chinese knight-errantry, 

which includes assassination for social policing, 

private vengeance, and banditry.

Roland Altenburger is Research Associate 

at the University of Zurich, Department 

of Chinese Studies. He received his doctoral 

degree in Chinese Studies from the University 

of Zurich in 1996. His research stays include 

a two-year term at Harvard University. 

The present book is the revised version of his 

postdoctoral thesis for the attainment of the 

venia legendi (Habilitationsschrift), accepted 

by the Philosophical Faculty of the University 

of Zurich in June, 2001. His publications 

focus on pre-modern and early modern Chinese 

literature, particularly vernacular narrative. 

His research interests also include literary 

regionalism and popular culture.
