4 The designation of a marine sanctuary in the waters off the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands was an accomplishment for the Pew Environment Group, which had long advocated such a step. The islands, reefs and underwater trenches will offer permanent protection to sea birds and marine mammals, and a huge, unique and fragile ecosystem will be preserved.
