Dear Planned Parenthood Family,
Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida is
celebrating 45 years of service to our 15-county organizational
area. The Board of Directors and staff are proud of the
expansion of services that chronicles a record-setting 76,000
patient visits, an increase in budget size to over $8.5 million,
and the development of a medical team of physicians, nurses
and clinic personnel who have expanded access for men
and women, initiated a medical research program and are
training future medical providers from local medical schools
and nursing programs.
Despite the onerous political atmosphere in our state capital,
our dedicated team is determined to keep our doors open to
the women and families in our communities and to provide
needed outreach education programs to our youth.
We count on you to stand with us and continue to offer support
that will subsidize health care services for our low-income
patients who are uninsured or underinsured.
We offer you 45 years of gratitude for your deep commitment
to and financial support of your local Planned Parenthood.
We hope to see you this year so that we can celebrate our
achievements together.
Legacy Planning Spotlight
Sandra R. Hughes
When Sandy Hughes’ foster child, a high
school senior who had grown up and
had been imprisoned in Africa, came
to her to talk about sex, Sandy wanted
to be sure the young woman received
good information from a trusted source.
Sandy grew up in a close family, but
one that didn’t talk about sex. She found
out about relationships and intimacy
the way so many did – through friends
and experimentation. So Sandy brought
the teen to Planned Parenthood for sex
education classes. This was Sandy’s first
interaction with Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood staff worked with
Sandy and her foster teen, who had been
raped and assaulted while in prison, to
arrange for surgery to remove the scar
tissue caused by the assaults, and for
counseling to work through that terribly
distressing time.
Sandy’s eclectic work life often brought
her face to face with social issues.
While working in admissions at a small
college before the Roe v. Wade decision,
she helped desperate young women
find an underground way to access
safe abortion services (and she was
pleased to discover that her mother, who
also worked in higher education, also
helped young women access services).
As the Western Regional Manager for
Community Affairs with Levi Strauss,
she worked with plant employees to set
up volunteer teams to support their local
agencies, including domestic violence
shelters, Planned Parenthoods, legal aid
services, and agencies combating infant
mortality rates.
Over the past
two decades,
Sandy’s work
has included
working with
the boards of
nonprofits to
help provide
them with the
tools to govern,
s t r a t e g i z e
and fundraise
r e s p o n s i b l y
and effectively.
The Planned
Parenthood family was fortunate to profit
from her expertise and commitment as
she worked with Planned Parenthood
Federation of America, our national office,
as well as several Planned Parenthood
affiliates around the country, including
our local Planned Parenthood.
Sandy’s passion for women’s and human
rights and the need for accurate sex
education made including Planned
Parenthood in her estate a clear choice:
“Planned Parenthood fits so strongly with
my values and my commitment to social
justice for women and men,” she says.
By including Planned Parenthood of
Southwest and Central Florida in your
estate plans, you can join Sandy in
ensuring that future generations will
have access to high-quality, affordable
reproductive health care. For further
information, or to become a Margaret
Sanger Legacy Society member, please
Advocacy / Public Affairs
We are committed to advocating for
reproductive rights for women, men and
teens: wider access to birth control,
comprehensive sex education in our
schools, and freedom of choice for
women.
Our advocates, supporters and coalition
partners focused their efforts on:
• Supporting the inclusion of women’s
reproductive health care in the new
health care reform law.
• Committing to get-out-the vote with: 168
volunteers participating in 21 phone
banks, reaching 7,388 contacts; street
canvassing; 35 action alerts; and lettersto-the-editor
campaigns.
• Lobbying legislators in Tallahassee to
support our Healthy Teens Act and the
Prevention First Act.
• Promoting the next generation of
advocates by sending 12 young
leaders to a national summit in
Washington, DC.
We were successful in recruiting 3,107
new advocates during the past year for
a new grand total of 35,406. Many of
these new advocates are members of
our four VOX college chapters (Voices
of Planned Parenthood) – young men
and women whom we hope to inspire
to take future leadership roles in the
support and advocacy of women’s
reproductive rights.
Eckerd College students (below)
encourage their peers to sign
petitions in support of ‘Birth Control
Matters,’ an initiative sponsored
by the national Planned
Development
With the support of more than
2,100 individuals, organizations and
foundations in our community, we were
able to accomplish the following:
• Our health centers handled more than
76,000 patient visits;
• Our sexual health educators reached
more than 23,000 youth and youth
advocates;
• Our public affairs department recruited
more than 3,107 new advocates in our
service area, for a total of more than
35,400.
• Planned Parenthood expanded
our ability to do outreach via social
networking on Facebook – where
our fan count grew 1,200 percent in
the past year – and Twitter; through
sponsoring community events such
as rock festivals (The Next Big Thing
in Tampa and Noise Ordinance in
Sarasota); through tabling events
(such as Tri-Chamber in Bradenton,
and Rosemary Rising and Pride Fest
in Sarasota); and by offering free STD
testing during two all-county GYT (Get
Yourself Tested) promotions.
2010 Development Highlights
• In 2010, for the sixth year in a row,
Planned Parenthood earned the top
rating – four stars – from Charity
Navigator, America’s largest and
most-utilized independent evaluator of
charities.
• To meet the needs of our growing
Tampa client base and provide greater
access to health care and services, we
launched a campaign to purchase and
renovate an expanded health center in
our busiest county of service.
• More than 2,000 supporters and
advocates throughout our service area
attended events including High Tea at
High Noon, Cocktails at Cove Café, the
Choice Affair Luncheons, Safe Sex and
our Annual Dinner Celebration, which
attracted more than 500 supporters
and netted $140,000.
At Planned Parenthood, we treat
health care as a basic human right
– one that’s dispensed freely and
without judgment to every person,
regardless of race, gender, sexual
orientation or age.

“Thank you Planned Parenthood for being
there for all of us, with several alternatives to
pregnancy. Prevention is my choice but I am
thrilled to know that if anything ever happened
and I were pregnant, I could come here and
have the freedom to deal with it in my own
way. Thank you for making it OUR decision –
and having the facilities available to help.”
