Vegetative Characters
Leaf blade and sheath. Grass leaves consist of a leaf blade (upper portion) and a leaf sheath
(lower portion) separated by a ligule. The lower portion of the leaf sheath typically wraps
tightly around the culm (stem).
Ligule. A membranous or hairy outgrowth on the upper leaf surface at the juncture of the leaf blade
and leaf sheath. It can range from a thin membrane to a thickened appendage. In Phragmites the
ligule is rimmed by a fringe of hairs.
