Golf News CLUB DE BONMONT WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION The CDBWGA finished their season on April 26, with a closing luncheon and election of officers. The 2012-2013 Board consists of Carol Widerberg as President, Diane 2012-2013 CDBWGA Officers: Huber as Vice Marian Gamin, Diane Huber, Carol Widerberg and Marie Connolly. President, Marian Gamin as Secretary and Marie Connolly as Treasurer. Sally Marsh and Dawn Laylock will be Tournament Co- Chairpersons. A sincere “thank-you and job well done” to the retiring Board: Anita Gentile, President; Ellie Glaysher, Vice President; Pat Miller, Secretary; and Debbie Zorn, Treasurer. Our Member/Member tournament was a 2-week event held April 5 & 12. The winning twosome was Lois Wilhelm and Frankie Fundis. Congratulations to them, and to all the other winners of this great event! Seven members of our league participated in the Volusia County Women’s Golf Club tournament on April 23 & 24 at LPGA, playing both the Legends and Champions golf courses. Five ladies finished in the money, so congratulations to Diane Huber, Frankie Fundis, Carol Widerberg, Anita Gentile and Shirley English! We are still playing on Thursdays during the summer, so come out and join in the fun! Sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board. See you on Opening Day, September 20! Carol Widerberg, President 386-586-7194, cweed50@bellsouth.net PRO TIPS BY ULRIKA SMITH With a creative short game, you can save a lot of strokes around the greens. A good rule of thumb is anytime you can get the ball rolling as soon as possible, the fewer margins for error. One club that comes in very handy around the greens is the hybrid. The reason why it works so well is that it has enough loft for the ball to get slightly airborne so it doesn’t get caught up in the grain. The other advantage is that the hybrid slides through grass easily because of its rounded sole. Hybrids come in a variety of lofts (18, 21, 23, 27 etc.) but if you don’t yet own one, a fairway wood (7, 5, 3 wood) will do the trick as well. How to play the shot: Think of this shot as a putt, only replaced by your hybrid/fairway wood. Place your hands farther down the grip, almost to the shaft and use your regular grip or putting grip. Take a narrow stance as well as get really close to the ball. You can tweak the ball position to your liking, just remember that a ball placed closer to the target side in your stance will come out a little higher and softer than one in the back of your stance. The ball tends to come out with a lot of speed, so you can hit this shot very gently and still get the desired result. When to play the shot: • When your ball is nestled up right between the fringe and the green. • When you are off the green and have a little too much fringe to go through for the putter. • When your ball is caught up in the rough right next to the green. • When you face a bare spot that will be tricky to chip from. Golf News PLANTATION BAY NINERS The Prestwick Niners and Club De Bonmont Niners have combined to form the Plantation Bay Niners. We have co hosted many events and are pleased to be working and playing together now. Our Member Member was held on March 28 at Preswick and the Member Guest tournament on April 25th at Club de Bonmont. The attendance was good and we all enjoyed the fashion show provided by Cold Water Creek. Once again Katie Kuhn held her end of the year Margarita party at her home on May 3rd. A great time was had by all. The CDB Niners held their business meeting and elections for the newly formed Plantation Bay Niners. The Prestwick Niners held their luncheon and last meeting of the season on May 9th. As usual Arlene Maicon went above and beyond to make sure the luncheon was beautiful and numerous members were recognized for their efforts. Congratulations to Jo Amundson for receiving the Most Improved Player award. The members approved the new Plantation Bay Niners Executive Board for the coming year: Maria Kesselring, President, Dee McCabe, Vice President, Jo Amundson, Secretary, Betty Rossi, Treasurer. We would all like to recognize the tremendous contributions that Arlene Maicon has made for the past few years as President of the Prestwick Niners. She worked tirelessly on each and every event and her sense of style was evident in everything she did. Thank you Arlene! The Club de Bonmont Niners and all of the women who worked with Linda Young appreciate the leadership that Linda has demonstrated over the past years. We are most grateful for the efforts of all the committee chairs who stepped up to the plate to make this past year successful. For the summer months the Plantation Bay Niners will be playing at Prestwick on Tuesday mornings and Club de Bonmont on Thursdays. We welcome new members. If you’re a new member or a member who would just you’d like to play nine holes of golf, please join us. We thrive on golf, friendship and fun! Dee McCabe, Vice President 386-265-5804 CLUB DE BONMONT MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION A core group of players attend the summer golf days every Wednesday at 8:30. The games are designed for easy team play using the better scores on each hole. Complimentary hotdogs and beer (soda, coffee or tea) will continue on the second Wednesday of each month. We look forward to all member joining us on Wednesdays. George Sampson, President PRESTWICK MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION Our annual meeting was held on April 5 & our new board was elected for 2012-2013: Tom Bailey, President Dan Sweeney, Vice President Ray Barbier, Secretary Terry Strachan, Treasurer Dan Ballance, Tournament Director The meeting concluded a great year of golf which included three away outings. Dan Balance is in the process of putting together plans for next year outings and will share with our members as soon as they are finalized. Our Tournament Schedule will be much the same as in the past years. The Match Play, Memorial Tournament & Ryder Cup Tournaments are all planned. We recently held the annual Memorial Tournament won by Don Griffin. Don’s name will be etched on the trophy displayed in the Prestwick Clubhouse. The Ryder Cup event will be September 17, 18 & 20. please set your calendars, further details will be forthcoming. This is a very popular tournament & one we all look forward to. In addition to our golf plans we will be continuing the free beer days on the third Thursday of each month. We want to take this time to encourage all our members to help build our membership. Our member rolls are down this year & we need to encourage every golf member to join our Association. We think we offer a wide variety of events and golf play that will be enjoyable to everyone.
