Debut at the
K 2007
This new Ecovio type is currently undergoing
its experimental phase at the
premises of select test customers. In developing
Ecovio L foam, BASF is working
together with a leading American company
in the packaging industry. Especially in
the United States, there is an avid interest
in biodegradable food-product packaging
for the food service sector. The experiments
so far are very promising, and
BASF will be presenting first laboratoryproduced
quantities of this new material
at the K 2007 plastics trade fair.

Bioplastics receive award
Material award 2007 goes to BASF’s bio-plastics
Two BASF plastics, Ecoflex ® and
Ecovio, have received this year’s iF
material award. The jury gave recognition
to the innovative and creative
application potential of these materials.
Dietmar Heufel of Global Business
Management for Ecoflex and
Ecovio remarked upon receiving this
prize, “The biodegradable plastics
Ecoflex and Ecovio open up a wide
array of options for designers. These
materials can be used, for example,
for packaging, they can be printed in
eight different colors and they display
high mechanical strength. Ecovio can
also be modified in such a way that it
is suitable for injection-molding and
deep-drawing applications.” One of
the reasons why the jury bestowed
the iF material award on these BASF
plastics was because Ecoflex lends
itself to a variety of uses in the realm
of packaging since it is waterproof,
tear-resistant, elastic, and it can be
printed on and welded. The iF awards,
which annually receive more than 5000
entries from almost 50 countries, are
among the most prestigious design
awards worldwide. The prize went to
two plastics in the category of material
& material applications. In this segment,
jurors look at the intelligent
utilization of a material and at the
resulting innovative results for products
and product parts. The winners are
chosen on the basis of the evaluation
criteria of innovation, creativity, form of
presentation, development potential
and feasibility. This was the third time
that the International Forum Design
(iF) in Hannover, Germany, presented
this award for innovative materials and
material ideas. The iF material award
gives manufacturers, designers and
design engineers a platform for their
design ideas in the four categories
of material & material applications,
products, ideas and processes. The
jury evaluated a total of 120 entries
that were submitted to the competition
this year.
