The Track & Field program has grown from less than 20 athletes
in 2010 to 36 in 2011 and the quality of incoming athletes will
provide a very strong base moving into 2012 and beyond. I wish
to thank MSA coaches Darren Clark (Jumps & Throws), Pam Ryan
(Sprints & Hurdles) and Frances Lipscombe (Middle/Long Distance
& Cross Country) for their efforts, the support from the staff of the
ADP program and the input of the external coaches associated
with the program.
Tony Benson
Head Coach
Middle Distance & Cross Country
The squad started 2011 with 12 squad athletes, a huge increase
from the handful of past two years, and many are already proving
themselves worthy recipients of an athletic scholarship through
results and especially their work ethic. Athletes deserving of
special mentions are:
Cody Shannahan (Year 7) for a 1500m PB of 5:03:00 in the men’s
1500m at the Victorian Milers Club meet on 15/3/11. Baxter Knight
(Year 9) recently relocated from Queensland and competed in the
Youth Track and Field Championships at Olympic Park on 25-27
February in the U16 2000m steeplechase placing 5th with a time
of 6:49:51. Ben Joshua (Year 10) placed 8th in the Youth Track and
Field Championships also and ran 8th in his U17 400m heat in
62:09 and 6th in the U17 800m heat in 2:24:83, Ash Millane (Year
10) is new to the school this year and is training well. Recent
results for Ash from Sunbury LA competition on 17 March 800m
2:33:64. Musae Andualem (Year 11) ran an excellent 3km time trial
of 11:39 on his first day of tech training and his very strong work
ethic and great technique indicate he has the potential to reach
international level.
Congratulations to Jacob McCormack (Year 11) who competed
in the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships held in
Sydney. Jacob came 7th in the 800m run with a time of 1.58.9min.
He placed 20 in the 1500m with a time of 4.11min.
Sprints & Hurdles
The sprint/hurdle squad also began 2011 with a huge increase in
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT & SPORTING EXCELLENCE
athletes. Results in the Victorian Youth Championships and Little
Athletic Championships this month showed the potential of the
squad. Kirby Smith (Year 9) placed 4th and 6th in the 200m hurdles
and 90mhurdles U16 respectively. With Jake DiPalma (Year 8)
placing 7th in the U15 400m in 63.09. In technical training Frank
Muscara (Year 10) ran a strong 600m of 1:36:0 , followed closely
by Jake DiPalma in 1.40:0. Teagan Newman (Year 8) competed
well in a variety of events in the Little Athletic Championships
and qualified for the Australian Junior Championships where
she competed in Sydney in the 80m hurdles finishing in 10th
place in 14.5. With a settling of the squad in to training, there has
been a development of a healthy desire to work as a team and
concentrate on the job at hand. Some good technical work has
been started on both sprint and hurdle drills.
concentrate on the technical aspects of each discipline as well as
undertaking a solid off season conditioning program.
