SPORTS DIRECTOR’S REPORT
As we approach the Easter break, it is worth reflecting on
what a productive and exciting term the Sports Academy has
enjoyed. We welcomed new staff members to our team and
they have made a valued and positive contribution to our
work with student athletes: Andrew Smith (Olympic Hockey),
Keeown Rawnsley (Melbourne Storm) and Amy Jackson (U/20
Australian Soccer player and current W League star.) We have
also strengthened our relationship with Olympians Chris
Anstey (Basketball) and Nat Titcume (Softball) who continue
to run our athlete leadership programs and Brad Johnson
(Western Bulldogs) has been a regular guest coach and
speaker within our AFL program.
Recently we hosted fourteen staff from the Singapore Sports
School who viewed our programs and spoke with staff and
students. We first made contact with them on a visit to
Singapore in 2006 and they expressed a keen desire to host
our teams and staff on sporting and educational exchanges in
the coming years. It further strengthens our ties into Asia as
we already have an established sister school relationship with
the Bukit Jalil Sports School in Kuala Lumpur. Planning is in
the preliminary stages for exchanges in football, badminton,
netball and athletics which is an exciting development for our
students.
The Sports Academy and College featured significantly in
the School Sport Victoria “Sporting Blues” Awards recently
which were hosted at the MCG by Olympic swimmer
Nicole Livingston and featured guest presenters in
Sharelle McMahon, Brad Johnson, Leisel Jones and Simon
Colisimo. The College won the Outstanding School Award
for community partnerships and former College parent,
Tony Schibeci was recognised for his exemplary volunteer
contribution to the Sports Academy students and program.
Eliza Smith (Volleyball), Christian Georgopolous (Soccer) and
Gronya Somerville (Badminton) received the state awards
in their chosen sports. The future is also looking bright for
the Sports Academy as current Year 7 students Bronte James
(Cricket), Najvada George (Netball)
and Stefan Skudarka (Tennis) received
the state’s top awards as 2010 Primary
School students.
Term 1 APRIL 2011
I was fortunate to represent Victoria
on a joint exchange to the UK with
several other school principals and school sport executive
officers from Australia and New Zealand at the start of term.
We visited eight Sports Colleges and attended the Youth
Sports Trust Sports Colleges’ conference. I brought back some
interesting concepts and programs which I will share with our
school community and teachers over the coming months.
Our external sports fields for tennis, soccer, hockey, athletics
and beach volleyball continue to take shape and are expected
to be completed in time for Term 4.
In closing, I would like to add my congratulations to our
successful teams and athletes from the end of Term 4 last year
and the first term of 2011.
Our basketball and volleyball teams performed exceptionally
well in their respective National Schools Cup events with
the basketball teams winning the three Grand Finals they
contested.
An impressive number of swimmers and volleyball players have
done well at State Level and several of our athletes achieved
personal bests in the recent national championships in Sydney.
Our recent swimming results are fully documented in the
College Newsletter.
Congratulations are also extended to Hannah Wright (U/19
Volleyball) and Guy Walker (U/15 Cricket) who were recently
named in Australian teams.
Our swimmers are off to SSV State Championships this week.
Six of our cyclists competed at National schools event at
Shepparton with a number of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals
collected at this event.
We also wish them luck and look forward to hearing about
their results in coming newsletters.
ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
ADP - What we’ve been up to in Term 1, 2011
It’s been a positive start to the year in 2011 with all the new and returning students involved in furthering their athletic development.
We’ve also been fortunate enough to welcome to our Physical Preparation team, Nathan Skewes (Exercise Rehabilitation) and, starting in
term 2, Caitlin Dalton (Sports Nutritionist). They join a range of staff who deliver ADP during school hours. The program has focused on
helping the students in three main areas; Physical Development, Personal/Leadership Development and Knowledge Development.
Here is a snapshot of what we’ve been doing:
It has been a smooth start to technical training this term with our
largest squad in the sports academy ever assembled, with over 60
boys involved.
We have been capably led by Leon Harris and Mitch Hahn and this
year we have split the group into three separate training groups,
the Senior/advanced, the Intermediate and Junior group. All
three groups have approximately 20 boys however to promote
development we haven’t limited any boys advancement- it’s all
about skill, attitude and consistent attendance.
It has been extremely pleasing to see both “PJ” and Pete handle
The ADP staff wish all the students a
good holiday and hope to see them in
the gym during the holidays.
the workload in the senior group given they are both in year 9.
Last week they were joined by two other year 9 boys Dillon and
Sean, Well done lads!
Another new initiative this year has been the “top trainer” singlet
and we have handed them out to the player most committed to
improving himself. We hope they will set the standard for others
to follow. That Bulldogs training singlet is to be worn by the boys
over their jumpers and should be an honour for the boys to hang
on to. This term, they have been presented to Dylan Sloman, Ben
Forbes and Darcy Wilson.
TERM 1 2011
This year we have lightened the load on our year 7’s only training
once a week however all other year levels are still on Tuesday
(3.30pm) at the Whitten oval and Thursday at the school gym
at 6.45am. Next term we will have all players present us with
a weekly match report from their weekend games at their 1st
session of each week. For the senior group, that will be with Mitch
Hahn in the weights area for a recovery session every Monday
7.15am. These recovery sessions will involve our new hot /cold
spas (I’m sure the boys will see the benefits).
Mitch Hahn has developed a leadership group who we hope
will be more proactive in supporting the whole group, be more
responsible for equipment and make important decisions for the
group to stand by.
Lastly we are genuinely excited by the arrival of AFL legend
Brad Johnson who has agreed to come on board as part time
coach and mentor to our AFL sports academy students. Brad
began with a talk and Q&A session in our lecture theatre for all the
B a d m i n t o n
Term One has been a busy one for all involved in the Badminton
program at the Sports Academy. Our numbers have grown and we
will continue to encourage more students to participate during
Term two – where Badminton takes centre stage as an Interschool
sports option.
Our Development Squad is training hard on Tuesday and Thursday
nights each week and we invite all to call in at about 3.40pm on
these nights to witness the athletes practicing their footwork
across all 6 courts. It is a great sight and all are improving their
skills and fitness. Any interested Year 7 and 8 students are
welcome to come and try Badminton with the squad.
The Academy’s Tier 2 athletes are showing significant progress
and will be competing in Regional and State tournaments later
in 2011. The Victorian All Schools Badminton Championships are
held in Semester Two and this is will be a tournament of focus for
these athletes.
Our High Performance Athletes have been working hard to
achieve some fantastic results during the first term of 2011.
Gronya Somerville of Year 10 represented Australia at the U19
Oceania Championships where she was a semi finalist in the
Ladies Doubles. Gronya was also awarded the Victorian School
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT & SPORTING EXCELLENCE
boys. He spoke about his journey, challenges and what it means
to be a leader. We had to wrap it up after an hour even though the
boys were like sponges wanting to keep asking great questions
to a true champion. “Johnno” then took our senior boys Thursday
24th March for a morning training session and they were “on fire”
for Mitch and him on the day. Johnno will come in once a month
and we hope he can impart his knowledge and experience on to
all groups throughout the year which is a bonus for the program.
I’d like to finish by saying how noticeable the improvement
has been already in the entire training group and we aim to
continually “raise the bar” for all the boys.
NOW for the start of the footy season-Let the games begin!!!
The Track & Field program has grown from less than 20 athletes
in 2010 to 36 in 2011 and the quality of incoming athletes will
provide a very strong base moving into 2012 and beyond. I wish
to thank MSA coaches Darren Clark (Jumps & Throws), Pam Ryan
(Sprints & Hurdles) and Frances Lipscombe (Middle/Long Distance
& Cross Country) for their efforts, the support from the staff of the
ADP program and the input of the external coaches associated
with the program.
Tony Benson
Head Coach
Middle Distance & Cross Country
The squad started 2011 with 12 squad athletes, a huge increase
from the handful of past two years, and many are already proving
themselves worthy recipients of an athletic scholarship through
results and especially their work ethic. Athletes deserving of
special mentions are:
Cody Shannahan (Year 7) for a 1500m PB of 5:03:00 in the men’s
1500m at the Victorian Milers Club meet on 15/3/11. Baxter Knight
(Year 9) recently relocated from Queensland and competed in the
Youth Track and Field Championships at Olympic Park on 25-27
February in the U16 2000m steeplechase placing 5th with a time
of 6:49:51. Ben Joshua (Year 10) placed 8th in the Youth Track and
Field Championships also and ran 8th in his U17 400m heat in
62:09 and 6th in the U17 800m heat in 2:24:83, Ash Millane (Year
10) is new to the school this year and is training well. Recent
results for Ash from Sunbury LA competition on 17 March 800m
2:33:64. Musae Andualem (Year 11) ran an excellent 3km time trial
of 11:39 on his first day of tech training and his very strong work
ethic and great technique indicate he has the potential to reach
international level.
Congratulations to Jacob McCormack (Year 11) who competed
in the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships held in
Sydney. Jacob came 7th in the 800m run with a time of 1.58.9min.
He placed 20 in the 1500m with a time of 4.11min.
Sprints & Hurdles
The sprint/hurdle squad also began 2011 with a huge increase in
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT & SPORTING EXCELLENCE
Boys Singles & Mixed doubles
• U13 Australian Championships – Runner up in Singles & Semi
Finalist in Boys doubles
Jacob McNally, Year 12
• Ballarat Open – Runner up in A-Grade Doubles
athletes. Results in the Victorian Youth Championships and Little
Athletic Championships this month showed the potential of the
squad. Kirby Smith (Year 9) placed 4th and 6th in the 200m hurdles
and 90mhurdles U16 respectively. With Jake DiPalma (Year 8)
placing 7th in the U15 400m in 63.09. In technical training Frank
Muscara (Year 10) ran a strong 600m of 1:36:0 , followed closely
by Jake DiPalma in 1.40:0. Teagan Newman (Year 8) competed
well in a variety of events in the Little Athletic Championships
and qualified for the Australian Junior Championships where
she competed in Sydney in the 80m hurdles finishing in 10th
place in 14.5. With a settling of the squad in to training, there has
been a development of a healthy desire to work as a team and
concentrate on the job at hand. Some good technical work has
been started on both sprint and hurdle drills.
Jumps & Throws
Maribyrnong College students have produced a number of high
quality results in the jumps and throws disciplines this term. At
the Australian Junior Championships in Sydney, Jagmandip Gill
finished 2nd in Triple Jump with a personal best jump of 14.02m.
Maree Muscara finished 3rd in the Javelin with a throw of 33.65m.
Teagan Newman discus, and Aaron Gardner Pole vault also
had top 10 finishes at these championships. At the VLAA state
championships Maree Muscara placed 1st in the javelin with a
personal best throw of 37.04 and backed this up with a 1st place
in Shot put with a throw of 10.26m. Jake DiPalma demonstrated
his improved jumping skills with a 1st placing in the triple jump
11.88m and a 4th placing in long jump 5.34m. Teagan Newman
finished 2nd in discus 32.56m and Louise Mendes finished 3rd
29.40m. Other top 10 finishes at this event included, Frank
Muscara discus and long jump, Katarina Rebuffo triple jump,
Harmony Hills discus and shot put, Priscilla Lavea shot put, Harvey
Connor Javelin and Triple jump, and Kirby Smith high jump.
Frank Muscara, Maree Muscara, Jake DiPalma and Teagan Newman
have all been selected in the squad for the ALAC Australian
Championships later this year.
During term 2 our throws and jumps groups will begin to
concentrate on the technical aspects of each discipline as well as
undertaking a solid off season conditioning program.
C r i c k e t
TERM 1 2011
Our Basketball program has entered a new phase for 2011.
We have changed our training structure to accommodate each
level of our athletes. We now have Shane McDonald and Peter
Fleming taking a more hands on approach with Shane looking
after the Intermediates and “Flemo’ looking after the juniors.
We are coming off of a great National Championship year where
3 of our teams won National Titles. This means that we are setting
the bar high and trying to push it further. The kids that have joined
the program this year have been showing a fantastic work ethic
and lots of enthusiasm.
The summer period proved to be a real showcase of the cricketing
talent at the Sports Academy, with no fewer that 12 athletes
participating in the state pathways competition at under 14,16 and
18 levels. This was a fantastic achievement by all of the athletes
with five of these being selected to trial for State teams later this
year.
The highlight of this term would have to be two cricketers playing
for Victoria at the National U/15 carnival in South Australia during
March. Touk Miller and Guy Walker represented the State with
pride bringing home a bronze medal winning every game except
one. Guy’s tournament was so impressive he was selected in the
C y c l i n g
Congratulations to our 6 cyclists who competed at the Australian
Schools Cycling Championships in Dookie. After three days of
rigorous competition on the track, up the mountains and on the
road athletes came away with a number of Gold, silver and bronze
medals.
Well done to Baxter Knight and Stephen Rutherford on competing
in their first Australian Schools Cycling Championships.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT & SPORTING EXCELLENCE
Proof of that work came in the form of scrimmage matches against
the highly fancied Rowville High School who have won some
5 State Titles in recent years. Our teams played very well and
represented MSA with pride. There were 4 games played with our
intermediate squads and the results show that we are on par with
our progress to become a basketball program these athletes can
be proud of.
To all of the athletes and coaches keep up the good work!
effort by both players.
Training has begun again at Merv Hughes oval with the eight
new athletes fitting in well and maintaining the high standard of
training. Improving individual skills is the focus of this term with
several athletes showing some rapid improvement. All players will
once again take part in an MCG session with the High Performance
Team at Cricket Victoria early in term two.
APRIL 2011
Term 1 has seen the hockey program begin with 17 students
participating as a part of the Sports Academy, varying in ages from
Yr 8 through to Yr 12. The group is still currently training at the
Footscray Hockey Centre, however we are all very much excited
about being able to be conducting our technical sessions at
Maribyrnong’s very own synthetic hockey field at the school.
The athletes have undertaken a pre-season style program that has
focussed on the core skills of passing, receiving, tackling and oneon-one
eliminations. A number of the athletes are training and
playing with their clubs in both junior and senior ranks, providing
them with a great foundation on which to continue their skill
development in all of these areas.
As we will soon start to look towards Term 2, the athletes will then
be busily into their club junior and senior competition games and
our focus will turn to the knowledge
S o c c e r
Maribyrnong Sports Academy Soccer Program strengthened its
program across many levels in 2011 with strong additions and
achievements from staff and athletes.
Firstly the program received a massive boost when it welcomed
back former technical coach Arthur Papas. Arthur departed
the program in 2009 after receiving the AIS Men’s Football
Scholarship coach position at which he was based in Canberra
for over 18 months. Upon returning Arthur has been appointed
as the program’s Technical Director and he will oversee the future
direction of the program and use his experiences working at the
AIS and with Australian Youth teams to ensure the soccer studentathletes
at Maribyrnong receive the latest training methods.
The Soccer Program has added its first Female Technical Coach.
Amy Jackson joined the program this year having returned
to Australia after completing a three-year degree in Sports
Management, which was fully funded by Florida State University
after Amy’s achievements with the Australian U20 team at the
2006 World Youth Cup. Amy’s role will be to coach & forge close
links with the program’s female soccer athletes whilst sharing her
experiences in playing at the elite level to further develop the
program’s female starlets.
One very special achievement was awarded to Zoe Stamatopoulos
who returned from injury in 2010 to receive a Victorian National
Training Centre scholarship from the states governing body FFV.
This is a very significant achievement for Zoe as she endured a
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT & SPORTING EXCELLENCE
and understanding of match play situations. A big focus of
the program is to provide the athletes with the knowledge
and understanding of a vast variety of situations that they will
encounter in a game of hockey, and subsequently how they can
best succeed in these situations. The students aren’t training to be
robots, but to have the ability to think and reason, and make split
second decisions in their match situations.
In the Easter break, Sarah Breen will be representing Victoria in the
Under 18 National Championships in Brisbane and we wish her all
the very best for that tournament. The majority of other students
will be moving through the regional and state selection processes
later in the year and we look forward to seeing their progression
and development as each of these steps take place.
Andrew Smith
Hockey Coach
very difficult 2010 after suffering a serious injury. Zoe’s resilience,
dedication to her rehabilitation and desire are trademarks of her
character and the Maribyrnong Soccer program is proud to have
Zoe represent the female component of the program.
Over to the male side of the program and the school welcomed
back it’s first ever AIS graduate in Melvin Becket. Melvin re-joins
the program after a successful 12 months based in Canberra in
order to complete his VCE studies at Maribyrnong and continue
his education both formal and within the soccer program. Further
to Melvin’s return the program added another athlete who
possesses a high pedigree in Jeremy Walker. Jeremy joins the
program from the Tasmanian Institute of Sport where he was a
full-time scholarship holder for two years, in addition to joining
the program Jeremy has also signed with Victorian Premier League
team Oakleigh Cannons for 2011.
Most importantly and in line with the program’s strong ideals in
developing not only talented athletes but also positive leaders.
Maribyrnong Soccer Program’s Angelo Fusca was this year elected
as a 2011 school captain. Angelo has been a valued member of
the program for some time now and is regarded by the program’s
staff as an exemplary role model who epitomizes the values and
characteristics of what the student-athlete is all about.
and coached a netball clinic.
The Sports Academy was lucky enough to get her to coach our
netball scholarship holders.
During our hour with this netball legend we learned about
footwork, ball placement and how important they are in netball.
We also learned about space awareness and did many new simple
drills that will benefit us in the future and improve our netball.
At the end we were all fortunate to receive a show bag with a
