LEDs and Battery Power Help Energize Chris Brown Tour
SACRAMENTO, CA — The “Up Close
and Personal Tour,” headlined by 18-year
old R&B standout Chris Brown, had a futuristic
look crafted by lighting designer
Daunte Kenner that relied extensively
on LEDs and, to a lesser extent, battery
power.
“For Chris, the LED look is ‘in’ and he
insisted he wanted to use High End’s
new ShowGun to create a young trendy
vibe,” Kenner said. “The PixelLine 1044 is
the perfect complement to the LED ring
on the ShowGun,” Kenner added, saying
its output and color-mixing capabilities
helped fine-tune the lighting and Chris
and his crew’s stage outfits.
The PixelLines were attached at various
points vertically to the set and lit up
frosted Plexi Panels,
creating a continuously
changing backdrop
of colors. Sixteen PixelArc
Rs spiced up the
B stage: a 12’ tall stage
that pitches 60° and
rotates 360°.
“First we made the
PixelArcs attached to
the circular B stage
p o w e r - d i s t r i b u t i o n
friendly. We modified
them by creating our
own pass through. We
also had to figure out
how to power at least eight of them remotely
without running a power or data
cable to the stage,” he added, because of
the B stage’s rotational movement.
“After a full day of research, numerous
calls and lots of fast food, we discovered
that a 12-volt Optima dry-cell battery
would power eight PixelArcs for over
45 minutes,” Kenner said. “I also used
another eight PixelArcs to uplight eight
CryoJets for an eight-foot tall blast of liquid
CO2.”
In all, the rig included 28 PixelLine
1044s, 24 PixelArc Rs and 18 ShowGuns,
controlled by an Avolites Diamond 4 and
an EDXM Tube. Performance Lighting Inc
supplied all the lighting.
Lighting on a circular stage B, which turns 360°, relies on rechargeable batteries.
