Minute Books 

24 Nov 1870– 26 July 1907. 2 manuscript volumes. In PGSSA1 and 2 

{The first of these covers the period 24 Nov 1870 to 20 Feb 1894, with 

various lists at the end; the second 13 Mar 1894 to 26 July 1907. The first volume is 

headed in manuscript on its first page of text “Minute Book No. 2”, so that the second 

volume, embossed in gold lettering on the outside of the front cover “Minute Book 2” 

is in fact Minute Book 3. These are both quarto volumes, and the earlier is full up. 

Since this covers 24 years, one has to conclude that Minute Book 1 must have been 

very small, since the institution was only founded in 1869. Its whereabouts is yet to be 

established. 

The records of the committee meetings are sometimes illustrated with 

press cuttings, more so in the later records}

between the two stacks, with the portrait of QEQM]. A roll of plans is on the floor

User education video entitled “Book hunt” – a bit on the lines of the TV 

programme “Challenge Anneka”. It was made by TV Centre, and they had hired a 

professional actress, but the weather on the day she was due to come was too bad to 

admit of external shots, and the video was shot later with the wife of a member of the 

academic staff in the lead role. It wasn’t scripted, and the final outcome was a good 

example of how not to do it. The video was never used.

Readers…”: The Growth of the University Library’, consisting of 9 x A3 and 4 x A4

2’, ‘Phase 2’, and ‘Phase 3’. There are 3 Portsmouth Polytechnic Library leaflets, 

dated 1980/81, 1986/87 and 1989/90, and a programme for the opening of the Library 

[Phase 2] by Lady June Frewen on Friday 7 th November 1980, which contains a note 

on Admiral Sir John Byng Frewen [“... a descendent of Admiral Byng was appointed 

as the last Commander-in-Chief Portsmouth in 1967, becoming Commander-in-Chief
