[This list is in no way official; it merely records the few primary sources and the
many and varied items of printed ephemera acquired over the years by the Library
from the University and its constituent institutions. Separate lists exist for material
from the former Colleges of Education and of Art]
Minute Books
24 Nov 1870– 26 July 1907. 2 manuscript volumes. In PGSSA1 and 2
{The first of these covers the period 24 Nov 1870 to 20 Feb 1894, with
various lists at the end; the second 13 Mar 1894 to 26 July 1907. The first volume is
headed in manuscript on its first page of text “Minute Book No. 2”, so that the second
volume, embossed in gold lettering on the outside of the front cover “Minute Book 2”
is in fact Minute Book 3. These are both quarto volumes, and the earlier is full up.
Since this covers 24 years, one has to conclude that Minute Book 1 must have been
very small, since the institution was only founded in 1869. Its whereabouts is yet to be
established.
The records of the committee meetings are sometimes illustrated with
press cuttings, more so in the later records}
a late one, announcing that Fax and Broadsheet are to merge, and inviting
suggestions for a name. See note to PTO in Fax section
Fax
[Can’t find a statement as to its status – presumed to be an independent
student newspaper, a successor to Pace]
Copies held are: 20 March 1974; May 1974; Xmas 1974; Feb 1975; March
1975; 11 May 1977; vol 7(1) ?Oct/Nov 1978; 2, ?Nov/Dec 1978; 3, ?Dec 1978; 5,
?Feb 1979; the next issue is headed “Revived 1982”, and states that the earlier Fax
“appeared a few times, but only as a Private Eye for Union activities”. This issue has
a competition for a new name; the collection includes one issue of PTO, apparently
published towards the end of 1982, but stated to be the first one. The archive
resumes with Fax 1292), ?Autumn 1983; 7, ?March 1984; 9, 4 July 1984. Also
present is a warning about a chain-letter “con” sent anonymously to Fax; it is referred
to in PTO, so presumably belongs to 1982
University Bulletin (continued from Polytechnic Bulletin, above)
No 142, June 1992 (an anachronism, since University status didn’t officially
happen until July. From No 145, subtitled “The Newsletter of the University of
Portsmouth. Two issues are numbered 160, (6 May and 24 June 1994); 163 is
incorrectly dated 11 Oct 1994 – it should be 11 November; two issues are numbered
194, (25 June and 5 July 1996) – and there is no 195; two are numbered 196 (1 Aug
1996 and a Graduation special); two are numbered 204, (11 Feb and 7 Mar 1997); two
issues are numbered 210, (8 Aug 1997 and a Graduation special) – and there is no
211; two are numbered 216, (18 Dec 1997 and 16 Jan 1998), and two are numbered
231, (9 Feb and 15 Mar 1999). There is no 220, nor was there a copy in the Eldon
Library run nor in another run that found its way to the Frewen Library, suggesting it
never existed. There is an unnumbered issue for 20 August 1999.
No 242, [2] 26 May 2000 is the last; editorial implies a new publication will
eventually appear, under a new name and with a new format.
the residents.
Large framed group photographs [most are in bubble wrap, and two are
wrapped together in some case; these are noted with corresponding asterisks, etc.]
