A constant effort to improve h<strong>in</strong>terland connections<br />
The <strong>Port</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Antwerp</strong> and its partners are <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g major <strong>in</strong>frastructure projects and<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>uous process improvements <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> short and medium term:<br />
Road transport<br />
· Increased capacity:<br />
– expansion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> highway<br />
between <strong>Antwerp</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Ruhr<br />
region <strong>in</strong> Germany (E313)<br />

– upgrad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Antwerp</strong> r<strong>in</strong>g<br />
road<br />
B<br />
· Improved efficiency between <strong>the</strong><br />
port and its h<strong>in</strong>terland:<br />
– reduc<strong>in</strong>g empty conta<strong>in</strong>er<br />
moves on <strong>the</strong> road, thanks to<br />
efficient reposition<strong>in</strong>g<br />
– cargo consolidation, with<br />
multimodal platforms <strong>in</strong> and<br />
around <strong>the</strong> port area<br />
– Dynamic Traffic Management<br />
system <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> port<br />
– advance notice <strong>of</strong> arrival times<br />
<strong>of</strong> trucks at conta<strong>in</strong>er term<strong>in</strong>als<br />

Rail transport<br />
· Increased capacity:<br />
– expansion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rail access to<br />
<strong>the</strong> port (30% <strong>in</strong>crease, from<br />
360 to 470 tra<strong>in</strong>s per day)<br />
– construction <strong>of</strong> an additional<br />
rail tunnel between <strong>the</strong> left and<br />
right banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river Scheldt<br />
(<strong>in</strong>crease with 109 tra<strong>in</strong>s/<br />

· Improved efficiency with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
port:<br />
– development <strong>of</strong> open and<br />
neutral, <strong>in</strong>tra-port distribution<br />
system for rail conta<strong>in</strong>ers<br />
Barge transport<br />
· Increased capacity:<br />
– rais<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bridges on <strong>the</strong><br />
Albert Canal, allow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
conta<strong>in</strong>ers to be stacked 4-high<br />
<strong>in</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>er barges<br />

· Improved efficiency between <strong>the</strong><br />
port and its h<strong>in</strong>terland:<br />
– advance notice <strong>of</strong> barge arrival<br />
times (realised)<br />
– daily fixed slots for pick-up<br />
and delivery <strong>of</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>ers by<br />
barge at conta<strong>in</strong>er term<strong>in</strong>als<br />
throughout <strong>the</strong> port (realised)<br />
