I know that many of our members, including myself, were very busy the last two days of February. The announcement of our award winners is an important component of our annual meeting and gives us a chance to acknowledge both our younger members and our more established ones. I know from personal experience that even the process of putting together a nomination package is a small but often very meaningful way of expressing your respect for a colleague and their professional contributions. Over the course of any given year, PSA is often approached by outside media sources to answer questions or address issues as a result of our stated goal of becoming the source for the dissemination of science-based information relative to poultry science. Last December, PSA was approached by a European organization that publishes interviews with various business and association leaders about their respective organizations. I have included a link to the most recent issue of their publication, International Innovation (http://www.research-europe.com/ index.php/2010/08/dr-james-w-kesslerexecutive-director-poultry-science-association/) because I think it fairly well summarizes some key discoveries made by poultry scientists, the role of PSA in the development of the poultry industry, and our goals for the future. I want to express my appreciation to Jim Kessler and Mary Beck for their collective efforts in putting this piece together. As I finish, I again want to thank Jim Kessler and Jon Cole for their continuing role in keeping PSA running on a daily basis and to the PSA Board for their support and input as we deal with ongoing association challenges. Please submit articles, news, and announcements to debis@assochq.org. From Your Executive Director James W. Kessler PSA Executive Director PSA Members and Friends— Greetings! I hope this newsletter finds you well and preparing for your journey to St. Louis, Missouri, in July to meet jointly with the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA) and American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP) to share our science. In the following paragraphs, I will update you on some of the activities Jon Cole and I have been involved in since our last newsletter update in October 2010. Web Site Design We continue to develop the PSA web site following our major update last year. The student sections dealing with the PSA Hatchery are under review and revision by your student board members Jessica Butler and James Tyus. Again, as you peruse the network and determine anything that we may do to improve the web site, please send those comments forward. And a special thank you goes to Ken Macklin again this year as he continues to provide timely weekly updates on the portal page. Audit 2010 Our audit will be conducted by May, Cocagne & King, P.C. It was our decision to change based on the timing and lack of continuity with the frequent change of personnel at Martin, Hood, Friese and Associates (MHFA). The process begins in December with interviews with the executive director and board members and will end with an on-site review of our records in March. The cost of conducting the audit for the 2010, 2011, and 2012 fiscal years will be $11,100, $11,600, and $12,100, respectively. This is a cost savings com- (continued pg 3) 2 SPRING 2011
(continued from pg 2) pared with the pricing received from MHFA. PSA Press Releases Five press releases have been developed and published since last September. This venue under the supervision of our communications expert Nathan May continues to keep PSA in the headlines as we address topics that are current and relevant to our industry and stakeholders. The communications are now being requested by popular trade magazines; interviews have been requested with the authors; and the press releases continue to be cited in daily e-mail newsletters such as Watt, Poultex News, and Meatingplace. With the success of this endeavor, we have been requested to develop an overview of PSA that will be published in Research Media in March or April of this year. Thank you to all who have been involved in the press releases; they are posted on the web site http://www. poultryscience.org/press.asp. Electronic Membership Renewals for 2011 The electronic membership renewal process continues to improve each year as we attempt to make the process paper free. We continue to use a final paper request for renewals, which has proved to be a very effective reminder for members to renew. The process will continue to be electronic, but it is apparent a paper option will remain a requirement for the near future. Please continue to forward any comments for making the site more user friendly to our attention for implementation (jamesk@assochq.org or jonc@ assochq.org). Awards Submissions Jon and I would like to thank all the award committees for updating the criteria for all the various awards and the sponsoring companies for their cooperation and input as well. The awards site closed on March 1 and the number of nominations was increased for all awards when compared with the 2010 nominations. The system has been improved to make it easier for members to resubmit nomination packages for candidates that were not selected the previous year. The Jones-Hamilton Co. Graduate Student Travel Grants Award will open for nominations once the abstract site has been closed. Grants are available to students both in the United States and in the international community for travel assistance to the 2011 annual meeting in St. Louis, Missouri. Please continue to forward any comments for making the awards site more user friendly to our attention for implementation (jamesk@assochq.org or jonc@assochq.org). Annual Meetings St. Louis, Missouri, 2011: The meeting is scheduled for July 16 to 20, 2011. We are looking forward to a great venue with AVMA and AAAP. We have posted the symposia scheduled for the meeting on the PSA web site, and the program group led by Amy Batal is working closely with AAAP to develop a grand program. Details of the summer annual meeting may be previewed at http://www.poultryscience.org/psa11/ Athens, Georgia, 2012: The meeting is scheduled for July 9 to 12, 2012. Sessions will convene in the Georgia Center. We are contracting to gain additional overflow housing, and that will complete any outstanding issues for this meeting. San Diego, California, 2013: The meeting is scheduled for July 22 to 25, 2013. Contracts have been signed and the deal completed with the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center. New Strategic Plan Initiative The Strategic Planning Committee, under the watchful eye of Mary Beck and overseen by Sally Noll, has made great progress. We continue to work on the strategic issues that were identified, and progress is being made in the membership, outreach, and especially Foundation projects such as the Legacy effort. We are hoping to launch phase I of the Legacy Project, the electronic journal addition back to 1908, in July. PSA Journals We continue to look for new marketing initiatives for our journal with the assistance of Susan Pollock, the PSA managing editor. Our efforts with The Charlesworth Group and The Kaufman- Wills Group are still under review. Open access is still an issue, but the board, editorial committee, and editors-in-chief continue to monitor the information that is forthcoming as the national struggle to define the process continues to unfold. We have also contracted with the marketing group Dragonfly in an effort to market our journals outside the United States. PSA Investments All PSA, PSA Foundation, and WPSA- USA assets are currently held at Stifel Nicolaus. Our accountant, William E. Gleason, continues to provide advice and opportunities as they occur. As of the writing of this newsletter, the asset totals for PSA and the PSA Foundation are $1,680,917.17 and $88,561.16, respectively. The WPSA-USA assets also continue to increase. Jon Cole and I extend our appreciation to Susan Pollock, Debi Seymour, and a host of other FASS support personnel, PSA members, PSA board members, and PSA FASS representatives for your continued effort in assisting the organization to meet its mission statement! All indications are that the direction for PSA continues to be very positive and that pride in the Association is high. We look forward to seeing many of you in St. Louis, Missouri, this summer.
