PSA Newsletter
Volume 35 Number 1 April 2011
From Your President
Mike Lilburn
PSA President
Greetings from
cold and snowy
Wooster, Ohio. It is
March and it seems
hard to believe
that we are only a
few short months
away from our
annual meeting in
St. Louis and the
end of my year of service to PSA as
president. As I am sure is always the
case, being president of PSA requires
responses to situations that could never
be adequately incorporated into a job
description for the position. In September,
Tom Porter, Editor-in-Chief of Poultry
Science, received a letter from the
Humane Society of the United States,
better known as HSUS, wishing to
submit a Letter to the Editor response
to Peter Holt’s symposium paper from
our meeting in Denver. We (Porter; PSA
Inside This Issue
Executive Committee) felt it was important,
with respect to the scientific credibility
of Poultry Science, to publish the
HSUS letter and to also solicit a rebuttal
response from Holt. Both letters can
be read in the most recent issue of the
journal. We have implemented some
initiatives in response to our new Strategic
Plan, two of which I wish to share
with you. Bob Taylor (University of
New Hampshire) has agreed to chair a
committee to monitor the Open Access
legislation currently being discussed
in Congress, and he has been very
engaged, on behalf of PSA, in numerous
endeavors in this regard. If passed,
this legislation can potentially have a
negative impact on the institutional
membership dues that make up a large
proportion of our annual revenue. We
have also initiated a discussion with and
opened our books to a financial planning
professional, with the objective of
putting together a budget model that
will allow us to ask the “what if” questions
relative to short-term or long-term
effects on our revenue streams (i.e.,
Open Access). We had an initial report
developed should be a key component
of future budget discussions.
With respect to our annual meeting,
some of the details of the program
are highlighted by Amy Batal in a different
section of this newsletter. Suffice
to say that PSA has long thought that
we have much in common with our
American Association of Avian Pathologists
(AAAP) colleagues, and combining
programmatic efforts would be a plus
for both associations. Batal will be getting
together in April with Richard Chin
(AAAP Program Chair) to finalize the
program, which, it is hoped, will include
some sessions that are of mutual interest
to both PSA and AAAP members.
Our annual meetings and the publication
of our journals are two cornerstones
of our association, and I know
that being program chair is a critically
important, but in many ways thankless,
job. I want to take this opportunity to
thank Batal for her efforts on behalf
of PSA in making this initial PSA-AAAP
joint meeting a success. Our membership
was consistent again this year, in
terms of both the number of award
nominations received and the timing of
the nominations. I know that many of
our members, including myself, were
very busy the last two days of February.
The announcement of our award winners
is an important component of our
annual meeting and gives us a chance
to acknowledge both our younger
members and our more established
ones. I know from personal experience
that even the process of putting
together a nomination package is a
small but often very meaningful way of
expressing your respect for a colleague
and their professional contributions.
Over the course of any given year,
PSA is often approached by outside
media sources to answer questions or
address issues as a result of our stated
goal of becoming the source for the
dissemination of science-based information
relative to poultry science. Last
December, PSA was approached by a
European organization that publishes
interviews with various business and
association leaders about their respective
organizations. I have included a
link to the most recent issue of their
publication, International Innovation
(http://www.research-europe.com/
index.php/2010/08/dr-james-w-kesslerexecutive-director-poultry-science-association/)
because I think it fairly well
summarizes some key discoveries made
by poultry scientists, the role of PSA in
the development of the poultry industry,
and our goals for the future. I want
to express my appreciation to Jim Kessler
and Mary Beck for their collective
efforts in putting this piece together.
As I finish, I again want to thank Jim
Kessler and Jon Cole for their continuing
role in keeping PSA running on a
daily basis and to the PSA Board for
their support and input as we deal with
ongoing association challenges.
James W. Kessler
PSA Executive Director
PSA Members and Friends—
Greetings! I hope this newsletter
finds you well and preparing for your
journey to St. Louis, Missouri, in July to
meet jointly with the American Veterinary
Medicine Association (AVMA) and
American Association of Avian Pathologists
(AAAP) to share our science. In
the following paragraphs, I will update
you on some of the activities Jon Cole
and I have been involved in since our
last newsletter update in October 2010.
Web Site Design
We continue to develop the PSA web
site following our major update last
year. The student sections dealing with
the PSA Hatchery are under review and
revision by your student board members
Jessica Butler and James Tyus.
Again, as you peruse the network and
determine anything that we may do
to improve the web site, please send
those comments forward. And a special
thank you goes to Ken Macklin again
this year as he continues to provide
timely weekly updates on the portal
page.
Audit 2010
Our audit will be conducted by May,
Cocagne & King, P.C. It was our decision
to change based on the timing
and lack of continuity with the frequent
change of personnel at Martin, Hood,
Friese and Associates (MHFA). The
process begins in December with interviews
with the executive director and
board members and will end with an
on-site review of our records in March.
The cost of conducting the audit for
the 2010, 2011, and 2012 fiscal years
will be $11,100, $11,600, and $12,100,
respectively. This is a cost savings com-
PSA Press Releases
Five press releases have been developed
and published since last September.
This venue under the supervision
of our communications expert Nathan
May continues to keep PSA in the
headlines as we address topics that are
current and relevant to our industry
and stakeholders. The communications
are now being requested by popular
trade magazines; interviews have been
requested with the authors; and the
press releases continue to be cited in
daily e-mail newsletters such as Watt,
Poultex News, and Meatingplace. With
the success of this endeavor, we have
been requested to develop an overview
of PSA that will be published in
Research Media in March or April of this
year. Thank you to all who have been
involved in the press releases; they are
posted on the web site http://www.
poultryscience.org/press.asp.
Electronic Membership
Renewals for 2011
The electronic membership renewal
process continues to improve each year
as we attempt to make the process
paper free. We continue to use a final
paper request for renewals, which has
proved to be a very effective reminder
for members to renew. The process
will continue to be electronic, but it is
apparent a paper option will remain
a requirement for the near future.
Please continue to forward any comments
for making the site more user
friendly to our attention for implementation
(jamesk@assochq.org or jonc@
assochq.org).
Awards Submissions
Jon and I would like to thank all the
award committees for updating the criteria
for all the various awards and the
sponsoring companies for their cooperation
and input as well. The awards
site closed on March 1 and the number
of nominations was increased for all
awards when compared with the 2010
nominations. The system has been
improved to make it easier for members
to resubmit nomination packages for
candidates that were not selected the
previous year.
The Jones-Hamilton Co. Graduate
Student Travel Grants Award will open
for nominations once the abstract site
has been closed. Grants are available
to students both in the United States
and in the international community for
travel assistance to the 2011 annual
meeting in St. Louis, Missouri.
Please continue to forward any comments
for making the awards site more
user friendly to our attention for implementation
(jamesk@assochq.org or
jonc@assochq.org).
Annual Meetings
St. Louis, Missouri, 2011: The
meeting is scheduled for July 16 to 20,
2011. We are looking forward to a great
venue with AVMA and AAAP. We have
posted the symposia scheduled for
the meeting on the PSA web site, and
the program group led by Amy Batal is
working closely with AAAP to develop a
grand program. Details of the summer
annual meeting may be previewed at
http://www.poultryscience.org/psa11/
Athens, Georgia, 2012: The meeting
is scheduled for July 9 to 12, 2012.
Sessions will convene in the Georgia
Center. We are contracting to gain
additional overflow housing, and that
will complete any outstanding issues for
this meeting.
San Diego, California, 2013: The
meeting is scheduled for July 22 to 25,
2013. Contracts have been signed and
the deal completed with the Town and
Country Resort and Convention Center.
If you wish to preview the location, you
can find an overview at http://www.
towncountry.com/.
New Strategic Plan Initiative
The Strategic Planning Committee,
under the watchful eye of Mary Beck
and overseen by Sally Noll, has made
great progress. We continue to work
on the strategic issues that were identified,
and progress is being made in the
membership, outreach, and especially
Foundation projects such as the Legacy
effort. We are hoping to launch phase
I of the Legacy Project, the electronic
journal addition back to 1908, in July.
PSA Journals
We continue to look for new marketing
initiatives for our journal with the
assistance of Susan Pollock, the PSA
managing editor. Our efforts with The
Charlesworth Group and The Kaufman-
Wills Group are still under review. Open
access is still an issue, but the board,
editorial committee, and editors-in-chief
continue to monitor the information
that is forthcoming as the national
struggle to define the process continues
to unfold. We have also contracted with
the marketing group Dragonfly in an
effort to market our journals outside
the United States.
PSA Investments
All PSA, PSA Foundation, and WPSA-
USA assets are currently held at Stifel
Nicolaus. Our accountant, William E.
Gleason, continues to provide advice
and opportunities as they occur. As of
the writing of this newsletter, the asset
totals for PSA and the PSA Foundation
are $1,680,917.17 and $88,561.16,
respectively. The WPSA-USA assets also
continue to increase.
Jon Cole and I extend our appreciation
to Susan Pollock, Debi Seymour,
and a host of other FASS support personnel,
PSA members, PSA board members,
and PSA FASS representatives for
your continued effort in assisting the
organization to meet its mission statement!
All indications are that the direction
for PSA continues to be very positive
and that pride in the Association
is high. We look forward to seeing
many of you in St. Louis, Missouri, this
summer. We are proud to represent you
as your executive director and assistant
executive director!
Michael J. Wineland
PSA Constitution Committee Chair
The Constitution Committee, composed
of M. J. Wineland, M. S. Lilburn,
M. T. Kidd, R. E. Buresh, and T. York,
with approval from the PSA board is
recommending the following amendments
to our Constitution regarding
committees.
Note strikethrough text for deletions
and underlined text for insertions.
Proposed change to
BY-LAWS. ARTICLE 10.
Committees.
Section 7. There shall be a committee
whose duty is to administer the
activities of the United States of America
(USA) Branch of the World’s Poultry
Science Association (WPSA). The activities
of the USA Branch of the WPSA
include: 1) the exchange of knowledge
in all areas of poultry science in accord
with Article II of the Constitution of
the WPSA; 2) cooperation with trade
associations in promoting better understanding
among the poultry industries
of all countries; 3) the promotion
of poultry scientists’ participation in
international efforts related to poultry
science and the poultry industry; 4)
providing for the participation of the
USA members in the World’s Poultry
Congresses by enlisting the cooperation
of appropriate government agencies to
facilitate the accreditation of an official
delegation, by promoting industry
participation in the Congresses, and by
securing travel grants for members to
participate in the Congress program;
5) increasing USA membership in the
WPSA; 6) nominating candidates for
membership on the Council of the
WPSA; 7) providing USA councilors
representatives and participating in the
meeting of the WPSA councilors representatives
at each World Congress; and
8) conducting other functions, as may
arise, related to the interests of the
USA poultry industry in its relationship
to the WPSA. The committee shall consist
of six individuals who are members
of the USA Branch of the WPSA in good
standing and who have a demonstrated
interest in international poultry activities.
Each committee member will serve
four-year terms, with the committee
electing its own President, Vice-President,
and Secretary-Treasurer every 4
2 years.
Rationale:
The President, Vice-President, and
Secretary-Treasurer will begin serving
their terms in January of the year following
the World Congress. One-half
of the members of the committee will
be chosen every two years: during the
member with the right to vote only
during a tiebreaker. In the event that
the president of the Poultry Science
Association is not a member of the
USA Branch of the WPSA, the board of
directors of the Poultry Science Association
will appoint an individual who
is a member of the USA Branch of the
WPSA to serve as ex officio member.
The president of the Poultry Science
Association will appoint one individual
who is a member of the USA Branch
of the WPSA during each appointment
year, and the membership of the USA
Branch of the WPSA will elect two other
members by ballot during June of each
election year. The standing committee
shall select the names on the ballot for
the elected positions, with a provision
for write-in candidates. The two individuals
with the highest vote from those
nominated during the World Congress
year will also serve as members of the
board of the Poultry Science Association
Foundation, Inc. (Article 9 of the By-
Laws) during their four-year term. Committee
members appointed or elected
during the year of the Congress will
begin their service on the Committee in
January following the World Congress.
Those members appointed or elected
two years after the World Congress will
begin their terms on the Committee in
January following their election. The
funds of the USA Branch of the WPSA
will be placed in a restricted account
within the Poultry Science Association
Foundation, Inc. (Article 9 of the By-
Laws). Expenditure of these funds must
be approved by the standing committee
of the USA Branch of the WPSA,
which will request dispersal of funds in
a manner consistent with the goals of
the WPSA.
PSA NEWSLETTER 7
PSA Hatchery Update
Jessica Butler
Hatchery Chair
First off, James Tyus and I would like
the thank PSA for sponsoring our luncheon
and the World’s Poultry Science
Association (WPSA) and PSA for sponsoring
our student mixer. A big thanks
goes to Rob Van Wyhe as well for being
an excellent leader and mentor for the
past two years. A lot has been happening
within the Hatchery this year! We
had an excellent turnout at the student
luncheon at PSA in Denver, where we
elected James as the incoming representative
to the board. We also discussed
interest in forming our own PSA
Hatchery board to assist in the planning
of events, newsletters, and such. The
mixer was held at the Blake Street Pub,
where we got a history lesson on a
ghost that haunts the establishment—
very spooky! Rob and I had a busy
year preparing for the PSA meeting,
which included assisting the Strategic
Planning Committee with the new plan
for the next 5 and 10 years. We also
had several conference calls regarding
the PSA Hatchery portion of the web
site. I think everyone will find it easier
to use, especially since it is no longer
necessary to sign in to the Hatchery
portion itself. I would also like to mention
that if anyone is on Facebook, the
PSA Hatchery has its own page, and
this is your invitation to join! We will
post information there on our events
and social activities. If you are not a
member of the Facebook community, I
highly recommend you join! James and
1. The annual Travel Grant Program has been suspended indefinitely to accumulate sufficient funds to support
travel grants to the XXIV World’s Poultry Congress, to be held on August 5–8, 2012, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
2. WPSA-USA and the Canadian Branch of WPSA will be hosting a joint lecture at the PSA Annual Meeting. The
Joint AAAP History/WPSA Lecture will be given by Greg Mathis of Southern Poultry Research Inc., and the title
will be “History of the Poultry Industry: Scientific Breakthroughs.”
3. WPSA-USA and the Canadian Branch of WPSA, along with PSA, will again be hosting a student mixer one evening
during the PSA Annual Meeting. Check the PSA web site for details.
3. A joint WPSA-USA/PSA bid for the 2020 World’s Poultry Congress (WPC) in the United States is being explored.
If found feasible, a complete bid for the 2020 WPC will have to be prepared and finalized for presentation to
the WPSA board in December 2011. The vote for the 2020 WPC will take place during the 2012 WPC in Brazil.
4. A change in Section 7 of Article 10 of the PSA Constitution is proposed to streamline continuity in the terms of
officers. This change, if approved by the membership, will call for the election of WPSA-USA Committee members
every two years rather than every four years.
5. The procedure by which the WPSA Lecture speaker is selected by the WPSA-USA Committee and Canadian
Branch of the WPSA will be revised. It basically places the responsibility for identifying and selecting the WPSA
Lecture speaker back on the two branches, where it typically has been. The role of the PSA board will be to
make the final approval, as it does for most symposium speakers.
PSA Foundation Update
PSA Foundation Board of Trustees President
Stuff.” So begin collecting your poultry
memorabilia “stuff” you can bring to
the meeting to help us raise funds for
the Foundation in a fun way!
PSA Legacy Project Update
The Legacy Project, designed to
raise funds to digitize and index back
issues of Poultry Science (and its predecessor
journals) to 1908 and make
them available on the Poultry Science
site, is nearing completion. As of the
end of 2010, we had received more
than 200 donations from 138 individual
donors and five corporate sponsors in
addition to the Novus Challenge Grant
of $30,000. Donations were received
from three sister associations: the
Southern Poultry Science Society,
WPSA-Canada, and WPSA-USA.
There were 32 gifts of $1,000 or more
from individual donors. A total of 36
donations were made “In Memory Of”
and 101 donations were given as tributes
“In Honor Of.”The total received is
$76,100.
The scanning of all back issues is
complete, and the files (abstracts plus
PDF articles) have been delivered to
HighWire for loading. HighWire has
been working hard on quality assurance,
making corrections, and reloading
content as required. As this update
is being written, we have received
word that the final rounds of corrections
and file resupplies have been
completed, and that as soon as access
control for members and institutions
has been configured, we will be ready
to launch the site. What that means is
that the membership will have access
to the past issues before our expected
release date of July, which we had
anticipated last year. Members will be
notified of the exact date for the release
as soon it has been finalized. The
Foundation Board extends it sincere
thanks to all who have contributed to
this important project.
2011 Silent Auction
The Third PSA Foundation Silent
Auction is planned for the annual
meeting in St. Louis. The format will
be similar to last year’s format, with
the auction held during the reception
before the Awards Banquet. Tony Pescatore
will be organizing and managing
the auction again this year, and has
(tongue in cheek, I think) suggested
the theme will be “Stuff People Want
to Buy”—we assume he means “Poultry
What’s Next?
The Foundation Board met in Atlanta
on November 18, 2010, for a fundraising
workshop. We engaged the services
of Melda Bassett, senior director
of development for the University of
Florida Foundation, to serve as presenter
and moderator of the workshop.
A number of initiatives were identified
and discussed, together with potential
prospective donors, for future initiatives.
An overarching initiative that
might be dubbed “Sustainability of
PSA’s Future” was discussed and was a
major point of discussion at the Foundation
Board’s mid-year board meeting
in January. We are in the process of
developing the next major capital campaign,
which we expect to launch at the
annual meeting in St. Louis. At present,
we are planning to raise funds to create
an endowment to provide for 1) undergraduate
scholarships, 2) graduate fellowships,
3) student travel grants, and
4) student research grants in an effort
to ensure support for future members
of the Association. We will keep the
members informed as we move forward
with this next exciting project.
2011 PSA Informal Nutrition Symposium
The 2011 PSA Informal Nutrition Symposium will be held on Saturday, July 16, at the America’s Center
in St. Louis, Missouri. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Exploring Maximum Animal Responses.”
The primary objective of this symposium is to provide an effective forum where critical and pertinent poultry issues
are addressed. Issues are explored based on scientific discoveries that lead to practical solutions. Consequently,
researchers can pursue future research and field managers can apply new findings promptly.
The five presentations and speakers are
Biological limits to productivity by Steve Leeson
Optimizing broiler performance using different amino acid density diets: What are the limits? by Sergio Vieira and
C. R. Angel
Poultry response to high levels of dietary fiber sources varying in physical and chemical characteristics by
Gonzalo Mateos
Nutritional limits to responses during the poultry embryonic development
by Zehava Uni
Maximum immunity effectors: Mechanisms and animal performance Limitations by Ramesh Selvaraj
There will be some discussions after each presentation. An extensive review and summation will be conducted by
Brooke Humphrey, Bill Saylor, and Doug Korver. There will be ample of time for questions, answers, and comments by all
participants.
