ON THE COVER: Dan Frievalt captured “Vacancy”<br />
in an abandoned farmhouse in rural Wisconsin,<br />
and the image merited in PPA’s 2012<br />
International Photographic Competition. “I had<br />
always wanted to shoot in this old house, and I<br />
found the perfect model, Jaci, who produced just<br />
the right amount <strong>of</strong> emotion,” he says. “I<br />
processed the image with a green tone to harmonize<br />
with the wallpaper and to add a slight<br />
eerie feel.” Frievalt used the natural light <strong>of</strong> two<br />
windows on either side <strong>of</strong> the model just out <strong>of</strong><br />
the frame and a 4x6-foot Larson reflector to<br />
bounce in fill light. He took the shot from a low<br />
angle at f/4.0 for 1/400 second, ISO 800.<br />
“What is super cool is that this was the fist<br />
shoot I did with the new Canon 5D Mark II and<br />
24-105mm lens that I won from the Canon Par<br />
Excellence Award,” says Frievalt.
