Prestige Philately - General Public 183 Page: 3
Prestige Points #183
1. This is our first sale since the highly successful Australia 2013 international
exhibition in Melbourne. Comments from dealers and collectors have been
overwhelmingly positive and, if more recent activity is anything to go by, the
market seems to have received a booster shot of adrenalin.
Warmest congratulations to our numerous clients who received an award at
the exhibition. There were many marvellous displays, properly befitting a
World international.
2. This auction contains our usual high grade eclectic array of rare and
desirable single items, plus dozens of attractive collections, to be found
throughout the catalogue under relevant country headings.
Australia features an excellent range of commercially used multiples, a
generally underrated field. For Kangaroo lovers, we have a couple of rare 1d
monogram blocks, and a large-part sheet of the Third Watermark 1/- Die IIB
perf ‘OS’. Highlights of the KGV Heads are a Perkins Bacon die proof in red,
and a newly discovered Single Watermark 2d brown with the Watermark
Inverted, only the second example recorded.
Other new discoveries are the Victoria Centenary 2d with Double Perforations,
used on a commercial cover, and an extraordinary error block of the 1981 24c
Toadstool. You may be able to tell us how it happened!
The standout section of the sale is the “Shades of Green” Collection of
Australian Postage Dues, consigned by an overseas vendor. This is one of
the finest such collections and includes many rarities that have been off the
market for three decades.
Nearly 400 lots of Australian Colonies/States are on offer, including superb
Classics from all areas. Mint blocks, pre-stamp covers including historical
letters, postmarks, and rare Postal Stationery all feature. From South
Australia, we have another fine range of the increasingly popular
Departmental Overprints.
Victoria features well-developed collections from two English vendors, with
elusive stamps, blocks and desirable covers that have been well-held for up to
half a century. Included are a number of singles and studies Ex Bill Purves.
The Rest of the World is strong in European material. Most notable is the
extensive Germany and Colonies formed by the late Bill Harrison from
Melbourne. Offered in sections, and conservatively estimated, this fine
collection is sure to attract a lot of attention.
British Empire includes gorgeous proofs from India and very fresh KEVII
Specimen sets from many Colonies. From the Gilbert & Ellice Islands, we
have two “Aeon” wreck covers, and probably the best collection of Christmas
Island locals ever formed. The New Zealand section is very strong, with
marvellous Chalons, modern errors, an array of Beer Duty stamps, and
several outstanding covers.
Finally, don’t overlook the extensive Literature section. Everything is priced to
clear, including many carton lots that are offered completely unreserved.
I hope you enjoy perusing the catalogue, and I wish you success with your
bidding.
