The collaboration of governments, standardization bodies and manufacturers<br />

around the world expedites the advance of Intelligent Transportation Systems<br />

(ITS) [29],[30],[31],[51]. As an essential part of ITS research, the potential<br />

achievement of <strong>VANETs</strong> research lies on the development of vehicular<br />

communication system that enables convenient, stable and economical<br />

distribution of data to benefit the safety and comfort “on the road”.<br />

Among various communication applications <strong>in</strong> <strong>VANETs</strong>, there is a wide<br />

range of important applications <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g traffic safety, traffic monitor<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

unpiloted vehicles applications demand <strong>time</strong> restra<strong>in</strong>t communication <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ad</strong><br />

<strong>Hoc</strong> wireless networks. We call these distributed <strong>time</strong> restra<strong>in</strong>t applications as<br />

real-<strong>time</strong> communication.<br />

As discussed above, highly dynamic nodes and no centre stationary server<br />

will cause the collision on wireless medium <strong>in</strong> the communication of <strong>VANETs</strong>.<br />

On the contention medium, packet delays and losses occur frequently.<br />

<strong>Real</strong>-<strong>time</strong> communication is easy to be frustrated <strong>in</strong> these scenarios. Therefore,<br />

it is necessary to develop a set of effective mechanism to guarantee the<br />

completion of these <strong>time</strong>-sensitive communications <strong>in</strong> a restrictive <strong>time</strong><br />

period.<br />

1.2 Scope<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g known about the promis<strong>in</strong>g future and tough challenges of <strong>VANETs</strong>,<br />

we center focus on the special field of MANETs, real-<strong>time</strong> vehicle-to-vehicle<br />

communication and roadside-to-vehicle communication <strong>in</strong> vehicular ad hoc<br />

wireless networks.<br />
