“The water looks high enough! I don't<br />

think there's going to be a problem!”<br />

Marty glanced up at the mast again.<br />

“That's great! But, what about the<br />

mast!?”<br />

Julie's eyes grew wide with panic as she<br />

suddenly realized that the higher sea level<br />

brought them that much closer to the bridge.<br />

And colliding with it had become a real<br />

possibility. But, before she could utter a<br />

word, they felt the vibration of the mast as it<br />

struck the bridge. It's mounting let out a<br />

groan as tension quickly filled its length.<br />

The sagging sail continued to fill with the<br />

storms fury, making the possibility of<br />

catastrophe a certainty. Marty quickly<br />

released his hands from the wheel, opened<br />

the hatch and shoved Julie down into the<br />

cabin. Closing it behind him, he pulled her<br />

toward the bow where they huddled together<br />

on the floor. Julie was paralyzed with fear.<br />

Her mind became blank as mental shock<br />

quickly set in with the anticipation of deaths<br />

inevitable touch. Marty, fought to remain<br />

clear headed, motivated by the assumed<br />

responsibility to protect Julie. Having been<br />

an Army Ranger, defending the lives of<br />

others came with the job. And although he<br />

was no longer in the Army, he would always<br />

be a Ranger.<br />
