Entering Roanoke Rapids, the nearest gas
station was on the outskirts of town and was
easy to find. But, acquiring it would be
difficult, given the lack of electricity needed
to pump it. Marty would again, have to
resort to siphoning gas from other vehicles.
Pulling into the gas station, he retrieved his
binoculars and carefully surveyed the area.
He thought that a town as isolated as
Roanoke Rapids might be untouched by the
infection. But, it was located on a major
interstate and likely had seen a great deal of
traffic. Marty realized that its location had
been its undoing and now stood as another
roadside memorial. Marking the demise of
humankind.
After making a cautious study of the gas
station and its surroundings, Marty got out
of the RV. The sound of the door closing
behind him startled Julie from a light sleep.
She had drifted off somewhere near Dunn
and was now rubbing the sleep out of her
eyes. Bringing her hands down, Julie looked
up to something so startling that she was
unable to speak coherently. She frantically
stepped out looking as if she'd laid eyes on
some horrific specter, newly rising from its
ancient tomb.
