” “
thank you
for your support
throughout 2012
A
nother year is already nearing its end. Let me start off by saying
thank you so much to all of you for your efforts and support
throughout a challenging year 2012.
As you know from last week’s announcement, I will step down from my position
as CEO of PUMA by the end of March next year. I would have loved
to stay longer and see some of the work that has been done over the last 18
months come into fruition, but unfortunately circumstances have changed,
which means that I will not be able to stay on board after that date.
As you are fully aware we are currently going through a major transformation
of our organization on various levels and you may rest assured that I
will give my very best over the next three months to successfully transition
into the new Business Unit Management organization and to support the
build-up of a new leadership team including the Chief Executive Officer
(CEO), Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and Chief Operations Officer (COO).
In this context and on behalf of the whole PUMA team I would like to pay
tribute and express my gratitude again to Klaus Bauer, Reiner Seiz and Antonio
Bertone who will all leave PUMA very soon after a combined 66 (!)
years with the company. You will be missed and we wish you all the best for
your future endeavors.
As already announced a few weeks ago, the new Business Unit structure
will be effective as of January 2013, yet we will need to spend one season in
transition whilst we put the final structure in place. The plan is to have the
new teams fully established in one location for the kick-off of the Spring/
Summer 2015 season, which means by June 2013.
In transition, some of the Business Units will be temporarily managed on an interim basis
until the final appointments are made:
Your CATch up Correspondents this Month are ...
• Teamsport: Filip Trulsson (acting)
• Running, Training, Fitness:
Mary Taylor (acting)
• Golf: Bob Philion
• Fundamentals: Reinhard Dischner
• Motorsport: Thomas Josnick (acting)
• Lifestyle: Adam Petrick (acting)
• Accessories & Licensing: Philippe Le-Bretton
Please join me in congratulating the newly appointed Business Unit leadership team.
We will continue to finalize the organization and appointments over the next couple of
weeks. More information will follow in the New Year - stay tuned!
This year was yet another busy and exciting year for all of us, which makes it hard to name
just a few highlights. It was a year of big changes, with our ongoing transformation program
progressing over the last months. In order to succeed, it is crucial that we continue
to pull together in one direction while a new leadership team is being put in place to continue
our journey. Thanks again to all of you for your support and commitment in these
difficult times.
It was a big sports year with the Olympics, the EURO and the finish of the Volvo Ocean
Race all taking place within months of each other. This issue of CATch up includes a big
special on our highlights from 2012 - I hope you will enjoy looking back over them.
We also continued to make big steps in terms of sustainability. In April, we launched our
new recycling program, the Bring Me Back Bins, launched in stores in Germany and currently
being rolled out to all of your regions. We also opened the first sustainable PUMA
Store in Bangalore this summer, and announced the results of PUMA’s first-ever Product
Environmental Profit & Loss Account.
Within the framework of the Transformation Program, we also need to refocus our internal
communications, which means that CATch up as an e-magazine is going to take
a break after this issue. Of course we will nevertheless make sure that you are being informed
about the recent developments at PUMA.
I would like to wish a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to those of you who celebrate
it. And to everyone else I wish a happy and relaxing time with your families and friends.
Keep up the good work and see you next year!
Until then, enjoy CATching up!
All hail the new PUMA King!
Earlier this month, we introduced the new PUMA King, a revolutionary
version of our world famous football boot. The innovative boots
come in a striking yellow and black colourway perfect for the kings
of the pitch – for example PUMA footballer Yaya Touré, who said:
"I've been working closely with PUMA to help develop the new King boot
and I'm really pleased with the result. The boot feels great, the design
is simple and modern and the performance technologies in the boot
help me to optimise my contact with the ball on pitch. My style of play is
all about control of the ball and the closer the contact with the ball, the
more control I have. Being part of a team is about inspiring the people
around me, when I'm wearing the PUMA King I have the confidence to
help control the game and secure another win with my team.”
SPORTS
P _21
You have been with Dortmund
for a few months now.
How have you found your time with the club?
My first few months with the club have been
very positive and I think also very successful.
The most important thing to me is that I stayed
healthy and fit so far, so I could play regularly. I
try to help the team every day and during each
match and I just really enjoy being with the team.
It is fun to train and win together.
How special is it to play for a club you supported
as a child?
It is amazing. As a child, I used to watch matches
on the south stand myself and supported
the team. Playing for Dortmund is like a dream
came true for me. Back then I stood in the stand
with all the other fans, now I know it is of course
a completely different feeling to grasp the atmosphere
from the pitch. It is just incredible.
You have joined a very successful team who have
won the Bundesliga two years in a row. Do you feel
a pressure to continue this success?
To be honest, not at all. Generally speaking, I am
the kind of player that doesn’t put himself under
too much pressure. I just enjoy playing football,
knowing that all things don’t always work out. I
am just going to keep working hard. It takes time
and of course self confidence to reach goals, but
I have that confidence and I will try my best to
support the team moving forward.
Dortmund have done so well in the Champions
League. How did it feel to play at international
stadiums like the Bernabeu, or at the Etihad
Stadium? Can the atmosphere be compared to the
famous south stand in Dortmund?
Dortmund is really one of a kind I have to say. We
have more than 25.000 supporters standing on
the south stand only, which is phenomenal. But
of course stadiums like Madrid or City or Ajax
have a special atmosphere as well, especially in
the Champions League. It is a great feeling when
you hear the music and walk out on the pitch. I
enjoyed playing at all those places.
What do you attribute Dortmund's better performances
in the Champions League to? Why has the
team done better than last year?
I think the main difference to last year’s performance
is that this year we actually scored goals
and made the most of the opportunities we created.
Last year, Dortmund played well too, but
the final ball or finishing was sometimes simply
missing. It sounds obvious, but in the Champions
League single goals are so important to succeed
in the tournament.
Is it more important for you to win the Champions
League or your first Bundesliga title?
I want to win both (laughs). No, I don’t really
know to be honest. I guess I will try to reach one
goal after the other, let’s see how this season
goes, but I couldn’t decide on the spot what is
more important to me.
Could you see yourself playing for BVB for the rest
of your career?
Dortmund is for sure like a dream club for me
and I always wanted to play for the BVB, but you
never know what happens in football and you can
never tell where you stay for how long. For now
“BEING ON PITCH IS
INCREDIBLE”
JUST KEEP PLAYING
Marco has been with Borussia
Dortmund for several months now,
working hard on his football skills and
self confidence to reach goals
I have a contract that I would
like to see out, but I guess you
always have to wait and see
what the future brings.
You have scored a number of
goals from distance this year,
including freekicks. Is that a
particular strength in your
game?
Back in the day, it wasn’t my
strength at all, but I have practiced
shooting from distance a
lot because this can often lead
to a goal. This is why I practice
day in day out in training.
My free kicks are also getting
more successfu, I am pleased
to say.
Do the Powercat boots help you
with this?
Yes, absolutely. When I take a freekick it is of
course mandatory for me to feel comfortable in
the boot, which I do, so it gives me enough confidence
and that supports me to score goals.
What is your biggest wish for Christmas?
For Christmas I only wish to stay healthy. Apart
from that maybe a PUMA PowerCat boot in a
personalised ‘Reus colourway’.
This year, Charity Cat
has continued to support
several major projects,
for example:
Aos Pés do Santa Marta,
Brazil
ONG Social Attitude aims to improve the life
of citizens living in low-income communities
like the residents of the Santa Marta
community. This is done through various
social and cultural offers such as music
projects. One of their main goals is to build
a better future for the children and youngsters
living there, knowing that they can´t
change the past, but can help setting the
course for a better future. At their music
school, for example, the kids can attend
music lessons and are offered homework
support as well as something to eat. This
year, donations were used for new musical
instruments, books and school materials, a
water tank, and more.
Kinder-und Jugendhaus
Bolle, Germany
“Kinder- und Jugendhaus Bolle”, located
in Berlin, is one of our ongoing projects.
This project supports children living on
the street with food, education and a place
to go. Furthermore, it also aims to prevent
child poverty, education deficiency,
etc. through several preemptive activities.
This year’s donation from Charity Cat will
be used for the construction of an extension
building, required in order to have enough
space for the steadily increasing number of
children in need. Aside from our financial
contribution we were also able to support
this great project with shoe donations.
School Dinner Project,
Tembladera, Peru
Charity Cat carried on supporting the Peruvian
project providing a warm lunch for
children and old people living on their own
at a local school in Tembladera. We also
made a donation of clothes and footballs
for the children. The local parish in Tembladera
runs a "parish kitchen." However,
to do this it is relying on donations that
are sporadic and often run out, meaning
the children still have to sit in class with
an empty stomach a lot of the time. When
members of Charity Cat heard about this
situation, they decided to help. >

FONMEH, Haiti
FONMEH e.V. (formerly MAEH e.V.)
is also one of the ongoing projects,
which received extra support this year.
At this year’s employee summer party
at PUMA, Charity Cat launched a big
fundraiser for orphans in Haiti. Our
eight meter long booth that provided
information about the aid organization
FONMEH e.V. and the sale of over 500
jelly-shots made it possible to hand
The rest was donated by the 2000
guests at the event. Furthermore Charity
donation of clothes for children.
PUMA does Movember
Last month, you may
have seen several male
PUMA employees sporting
moustaches, including
Keith Woods together
with his colleagues
Robert Brummer,
Markus Diemann, Omar
Perez, Eduardo Ayala,
Dan Dance, Tim Peck,
Hugh Clarke, Carl Tuffley,
Martin Kronbuegel,
Pascal Schuster and Neil
Speaight. Why?
Keith explains: “During
November each year, Movember is
responsible for the sprouting of
moustaches on thousands of men’s
faces around the world. With their
'Mo's' these men raise vital awareness
and funds for men's health issues,
specifically prostate and testicular
cancer initiatives. For the 30 days of
November we were in effect walking/
talking billboards raising awareness
by prompting private and public
conversation around men’s health.
I was made aware of this last year by friends
in the UK, and decided it'd be fun to grow
a moustache and raise awareness at the
same time. While growing it last year so
many people asked me why and asked
me to 'tell me next year and I'll
join you'. We all agreed that rather than just
raising awareness we may as well raise
some money, too. I'm pleased to say we
raised 130 euros for The Prostate Cancer
Foundation. I'd like to thank all of the guys
for taking part, and here's to next year!”
On Monday, the PUMA apprentices
a financial donation worth around
1800 EUR in total for the 47 children
the kids had listed on their wish
was collected amongst the different
