A YEAR TO CELEBRATE
The Head writes:
In this Jubilee year, when one of our students not only
played for the Queen but also met Prince Philip, we too
have a lot to celebrate.
Over the last year, students and staff from The Queen
Katherine School have travelled to Texas, Alabama, and
different parts of Europe to improve their skills and knowledge,
thrown themselves voluntarily from a plane to raise
money for charity and given their time cheerfully and enthusiastically
to helping others; supported local artistic,
musical, dramatic and sporting groups; experienced what
it’s like to be part of a working team in environments
ranging from mucking out in stables to flying in the sophisticated
machines of the Royal Air Force. In school, students
and staff have shown the capacity to more than cope with all
the many curricular changes that seem to be a part of
modern education. This Newsletter records a flavour of
that year.
As always at the end of a school year, we say farewell to
some members of staff. We have an unusually small number
of colleagues leaving at the end of this year. Judi Jennings,
Heather Frankland, Helen Wilson and Stuart Langhorne are
moving East, West, North and South! Alan Hedges, Arthur
Atkinson, Barbara Hoyle and Ian Walker, who have all
covered for absent colleagues, are also moving on. I am sure
we will all want to thank each of them for their hours of
committed service. We wish them well, and also every
happiness in their new professional challenges.
I would also like to record my thanks to our Senior
Students Robin Davies, Simon Howe, Iona Robinson and
Samantha Pollitt, and to welcome their replacements
Geraldine Booth, Rose Buckler, Jonny Moss and Tim Scott.
Finally I would like to thank all staff, the QKSA and all
students and parents for their support in another exciting
year. I hope you have an enjoyable break and look forward
to working with you in September.

The School’s
musical production
‘Half a Sixpence’
is playing
this week to
packed audiences.
Well over one
hundred students – ably
choreographed, rehearsed, instructed and cajoled by Mrs
Barber and Mrs Pater – have been entertaining those lucky
enough to see them. Stuart Oldham,
who played the part of a crapshooter
in ‘Guys and Dolls’
and Harry in ‘My Fair Lady’,
reflects on what it’s like to have
a leading role for the first time.
‘I was really happy to find
out that I had got the main part in
the school musical and as the
character that I wanted. I was
very aware of all the time I would

have to spend rehearsing with the other cast members, which I
was looking forward to. When I saw how many lines I had to
learn I was quite worried as I haven’t had to learn that many
lines in my two previous plays – but I’ve managed to learn them
all right.
‘Playing the part of Arthur Kipps, a Cockney who inherits a
fortune and finds out what it’s like to be rich, has been great
fun. Getting the hang of the accent was quite hard at first – but
I just watched ‘Eastenders’ for a few weeks and I had it sorted!
‘One of the best bits for me has been working with the other
lead roles – Katy Bell and Hannah Fleming. Also, working
with the famous Mr Bell has
brought lots of laughs.
Although the rehearsals
have taken up a lot of
time for the cast, and for
Mrs Barber and Mrs
Pater, I hope all their
(and our) hard work and
effort has paid off, and
that the show turns out as
well as we hope it will’.

Thurs 23.30: To Ferrybridge in Humberside to meet coach, then via various stops around the country to Dover.
Ferry to Calais early evening. I hate the sea!
Friday 21.00: Arrive hotel. Check in, then the weighing in, and at last bed
Sat 06.30: Early alarm to make bed and tidy up before breakfast
Sat 08.00: Discover what time my particular weight category is on. 1,500 competitors, so it could be at any
time in the day. Hope it’s early so I don’t have to hang around all day. Hope I do well: it’s awful to
think you’ve come all this way and then go out early
Sat 18.15: Competition finally starts for me. Ten hours just hanging around – but it goes well.
Sat 20.00: Back on bus/ferry. I hate buses – but if I get into the senior squad I’ll fly to competitions!
Sun 07.00: Arrive back in Kendal. Is it worth it? Yes!!

The girl with
blonde pigtails

The girl with blonde pigtails
You’ll know her when you see her
Because of the one who gazes from afar
This is why the poem’s here
He had no clue how she felt
When he admired her all day
For she felt the same as he
But in a different way
He tried to make the first move
But didn’t have the guts
‘I’ll ask her to a film’ said he
But thought how daft he’d look
If she said ‘Not a chance’
Because, remember, he didn’t know
That ‘pigtails’ positively
Would have liked to go
So instead he went and left it
He’d ask another day
There would be another chance-
He’d no money anyway
So he waited for that second chance
Alas it never came –
Until one day her friend popped up
And then said her name
Pigtails apparently noticed
The gazes from afar
And so his new life began
Not lonely anymore
At first they were really shy
Their eyes barely crossed
So he decided to take action
If it was to last
So exactly seven days later
He would find a seat
Secluded in the park
For the first time lips would meet
And so the game began
But this is just the start
Alas there isn’t enough space to write

So many questions,

What is the QKSA? Are you even aware that there is a
flourishing PTA at the school? Read on – and you’ll be
amazed at what has gone on this last exciting year.
The main focus of the QKSA is fund-raising – but
fund-raising with a smile. We are completely committed
to giving as much financial backing to our students and
staff as we can; but we try and combine this with an
important social aspect. We enjoy what we do. And we see
the QKSA as a chance for you to meet new people, to get
to know the staff at your children’s school, to have a say
in what is going on – as a way, if you want it, to be elected
onto one of the school’s management committees.
So what have we done this year? Fundraising has been
focused on the new Library extension (last year we raised
£20,000 for the Sports Hall). This year we have raised
nearly £6,000 through the Christmas draw, bag-packing at
Asda and Marks and Spencer, the Family Fun Day (the
winning team of SOHCAHTOA is pictured with Mrs
Emmott) and the 200 Club draw. On the social side we
held a 60s/70s night with bands provided by the school;
and had a Christmas dinner at a local restaurant.
Forthcoming events include a Coffee Morning at the
Town Hall on Sat. 20 July, a Treasure Hunt for the new
Year 7 intake and families, bag-packing, and a Christmas
Fair in November – if any parent is interested in placing
an advertisement in the Christmas Fair Brochure please
ring Lyndsay Slater (Kendal 726611).
If you feel you would like to become involved in the
QKSA, why not come along to our AGM on Monday 28
October at 7.30pm. We are always looking for new
members with fresh ideas. We are a friendly bunch – why
not give it a try and ring Gill Sadler (Kendal 724831).
