Is God to Be Served? By PASTOR LYMONE. JONES During the last decades, one hears more and more oif "Democracy". Not so much as a form of government, but more as a religion, a philosophy of life. The people must determine what THEY want. The people are the masters, the Pf^le must be served. We do not want to quarrel with some of these principles, but we do wonder whether this propaganda cannot get out of hand? More and more this idea seems to be taking hold on man's thinking, that man is in the center of everything and his whims and wishes are paramount. In our educational thlnkine of the past half century much has been made of self determination. Much has been said about not inhibiting the budding young spirit, about spoiling his initiative, about restricting him. He was to be left pretty well to develop naturally without restrainiiig influences. And so we have the familiar, "I won't!" "I don't like this!", "I don't want that!" Always and again, "I", "I", "I", "I", as if "I" was the only one to come into consideration. We pride ourselves upon our progress, our success, and our prosperity. We seem. bent on increasing these and to try to enjoy them ever more fully. We are In the center of our drives, desires, and ambitions. "We", "We", "We", as if "We" were the Lords of this world. And so we have pride, selfishness, nationalism, greed, wars, strivings, hatred and so on. There is a clash of "We" and "I" sonalities everywhere. per- How dlfferenUy the Bible places the emphasis. Looking back over the centuries we find God saying from Mt. Sinai, "Thou Shalt have no other Gods before me!" Ex. 20, and, "I, the Lord, thy God am a Jealous God!" and Jesus re-echoes this in Matt. 4,10, "Thou Shalt worship the Lord thy God,' and Him only shalt thou serve!" and Matt. 22,37, "Thou Shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy sould and with all thy mind!" And "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself!" And the holy Apostle Paul continues the same theme throughout his epistles as we see in Thess. 4, 3 "This is the will of God even your sanctification!" And Gal. 5,13, "By love serve one another!" and 1 Cor. 10, 31 "Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do it all to the glory of God!" And our "jealous God" is going to be around ' for quite a while to check up on us and to collect for our infractions! We know there is a Judgement I^y coming, and we must face it. But all demands upon the human being are not going to soften him up and make him become willing to comply. These demands only bring forth resentment, bitterness, opposition, ret>ellion, and hatred for God and His demands! We are indeed subject to a higher power whether we like it or not. Yet, when one sees the Love of God in Christ Jesus, sees how God took it out on His own Son, what He should have required of US; when we realize, that "God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself", only then do our hearts melt and instead of hatred we fiiid love beginning to enter into our natures and a sense of gratitude compels us to comply with God's demands. Yes, when the love of Christ has entered into our lives then we WANT to serve God and WANT Him for our God! Only then can we say with Paul 2 Cor. 5, 5, "He died for all that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him, Who died for them and rose again!" Or with Zaharias in Luke 1, 7, "That we being delivered out of tlie hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our lives!" Then we can see God's plan as Paul reveals it to us in Eph. 2, 10, "We are His workmanship (that is, God's product or creation) created in Christ Jesus (yes, through Christ's work for us we are new creatures of God) UNTO GOOD WORKS, (there is the punch line!) which God hath before ordained (it was His "Blue print") that we should walk in them!" What a God! What a purpose! What an incentive! Who can resist giving himself to such a God, Who has given Himself to and for us? How can we still be small and selfish and self centered, when we can now rejoice and dedicate ourselves body and soul for time and for eternity to SUCH A GOOD GOD! Explore the Mind "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what Is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will be of God," is one of the Bible passages included in this week'sserviceon"Mind" to be read in all Christian Science churches Sunday. Also included are these related lines from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "The expression 'mortal mind' is really a solecism, for Mind is immortal, and Truth pierces the error of mortality as a sunbeam penetrates the cloud." This lesson is the last in a series exploring the nature of Deity through a group of special terms - Life, Truth, Love, Spirit, Soul and Mind. Authority, A Sign of The True Church By ELDER Clayton B. Sibbett ELDER Jerry L. Russell During Christ's three year ministry upon the earth he showed men the pathway to eternal life. He performed his work with divine power and authority. Before his crucifixion he left carefully selected men to continue his work. The scriptures tell us: "And he ordained twelve, that they should be with Him, and that He might send them forth to preach." (Mark 3:14). Also, "Then He called His twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority. . . And He sent them to preach the kingdom of God. .(Luke 9: 1-2). Other scriptures tell us about the manner in which Christ set up His church. He organized a church of which He was the head (Matt. 16: 18-19, Eph. 5:23). He also appointed officers, headed by the apostles, with specific duties to perform. (Mark 16:15; Luke 6: 12-16; Eph. 4: 11-14; John 21: 15-17). Through these scriptures we can see that Christ gave His apostles divine authority and the responsibility to preside over the church on this earth. In comparison we can see that the organization of the Christian churches today have changed. This brings up the question: What happened to the authority by which the organization was operated? "The authority of the Church is administered through the power of the The British merchant ship Rosedale, en route from London to Victoria ran on to Rosedale RockDec ember 12th, 1862. She got tierself off and was beached In Ross Bay without loss of life. priesthood, defhied most simply, is the power given to man to act in the name of and in behalf ofGod in righteousness. The priesthood will be lost to a man or organization when it is not used in compliance with the will of God and in righteousness. When this occurs, apostasy - of the individual or of the whole - occurs." Examination of church history shows us that after the death of the apostles the church became a political foundation rather than spiritual. Obviously this was not predicated on the principle of righteousness. So this divine authority.or priesthood was taken from the earth until me n were able to live in accordance with the laws of God. Now we, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Sahits "believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands, by those who are in authority to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof." This authority has been restored to the earth in these latter days. In the year 1829 John the Baptist and Peter, James and John appeared to Joseph Smith and conferred upon him the priesthood. On April 6, 1830, the Church of Jesus Christ was organized under the authority of the Holy priesthood and was established on the earth once again. It is organized the same way today as it was in ancient times. We know that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, so it can be organized in no other way. The true Church of Jesus Christ offers the only means by which we can gain eternal life. We give to all a challenge to read, study, and earnestly pary about the truth of these things and it shall be made known to you. THE QUESNEL CARIBOO OBSERVER - THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1966 - 5 Lutheran Convention Forms New Circuit Pastor Lymon E.Jones, of Trinity Lutheran Chmrch, was among the 150 delegates attending the 31st Convention ofthe Alberta - British Columbia District of the Lutheran Church - Canada which met in Calgary this week. The convention considered reports on the work of the church t>oth in the two western provinces as well as throughout the world, where its missionaries work in 30 countries. The Rev. Mr. Jones is a member of the committee to review the activities of the Board of Directors over the last two years, and to consider proposals submitted from various congregations throughout the district regarding such activities. Visiting church officials were: The Rev. Dr. W. Kreiger, fourth vice president of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, of Jackson, Michigan; the Rev. Dr. J.A.O. Preus, president of Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Illinois, who delivered the main essay of the convention on "The authority of scripture." In the course of the convention, balloting took place for new officers to lead the church for the next four years. Several submissions were considered, among them being the formation of a new circuit of the Cariboo and Central B.C. Another was the proposal to separate and form two Districts along provincial lines. This was the first time that the convention was held in Calgary. It is usually convened in Edmonton in Concordia College. This year it was thought better participation might l>e obtained by meeting during the winter months. An invitation to meet In Vancouver for the next convention in two years was entertained.
