Logistics Coordinator
“I was in charge of designing suitable menus, placing orders with the wholesaler and
allocating food to the groups, working within a tight budget for the duration of the
expedition. I really enjoyed the camaraderie at Fieldbase, the variety of the job and
especially answering the radio - it was great having an overview of where the groups
were and what they were up to. I also got the chance to go on road trips to see some
spectacular projects, working alongside some fabulous Costa Ricans which meant
my Spanish improved dramatically!”
Katie Aston, Costa Rica and Nicaragua 2010
The Role
The Logistics Coordinator is part of the fieldbase team, working alongside the Logistics
Manager to ensure teams on project sites have all the food, materials and equipment they
need to complete their projects. This is a challenging role and one that’s essential to the
smooth running of the expedition. It’s not necessary to have a logistical background, just
good organisational and administrative skills and a motivation to do the job well. Logistics
Coordinators are usually allocated a specific area, either rations or equipment, however
duties may vary with each expedition. One of the most important aspects of the role is the
ability to be flexible and willing to work long and hard at certain busy times, responding to
often unpredictable and changing circumstances. You must be ready to work on your own
initiative and be a good communicator and team player.
Essential Skills
Excellent administrational and organisational skills
Good knowledge of spreadsheets
Methodical and thorough planning
Accuracy and attention to detail
Excellent time management
First class communication skills
Ability to cope with brief but intensive high activity periods
Openness to additional responsibility or assisting other volunteer managers during
low activity periods.
Willingness to be flexible and put the needs of the expedition and the venturers first
Fieldbase
You’ll be part of a team of volunteer managers working from the in-country headquarters
to support the expedition under the guidance of the in-country staff. Fieldbase is a lively
place and a great opportunity to learn new skills: the team split their time between
fieldbase and time on the road. Versatility is essential: you might be required to take on
extra responsibility while other volunteer managers are away from fieldbase. Likewise,
you might get the chance to spend time as a project manager or join a trek for a few days.
Every expedition is different but the fieldbase team should be ready to get stuck in and
put the needs of the expedition first.

Logistics Coordinator (cont...)
Core Responsibilities
Plan, manage and account for rations or equipment for up to 150 people, working
largely on your own initiative
Use existing systems to implement the above or establish new systems where
necessary
Place large accurate orders with suppliers, maintain good relations and seek cost
effectiveness
Work within a budget set by the logistics manager and be able to account for all
expenditure
Accurately and effectively administer the issue of rations or equipment
Be able to account for the whereabouts of all rations or equipment
Liaise with the logistics manager and/or logistics team on any equipment repairs or
rationing changes
Keep a clean, organised storeroom - rations stored hygienically and equipment
stored safe, clean and ready for use
You may be required to organise the end of expedition party e.g. food, drink and
entertainment
Other Information
Logistics co-ordinators are required to join the expedition at least a week earlier than the
main volunteer manager team. This is to assist the Logistics Manager and/or other Logistics
Coordinators in preparing for the volunteer managers' arrival and the programme in general.
You may also be given the opportunity to drive the vehicle fleet in Borneo, Costa Rica and
Nicaragua, following an in-country assessment of your driving skills, safety and experience.
We use local drivers in India so volunteer managers do not drive on those expeditions.
Benefits
Make a genuine difference to host communities and environments: with a permanent
fieldbase in each country, in-country staff are able to build long-term relationships
with project partners and beneficiaries to ensure the projects are worthwhile and
sustainable
Get off-the-beaten track! Raleigh works in areas tourists don’t have access to,
meaning that our programme offers a unique opportunity to explore remote and
pristine environments
Experience a unique exchange of cultures and get to know some incredible people
you may not otherwise have the chance to meet
Develop your skills and confidence in an exciting and challenging environment whilst
helping young people on their way to being the best they can be
Logistics co-ordinators will be given the opportunity to drive the vehicle fleet in
Borneo and Costa Rica following an in-country assessment of their driving skills,
safety and experience however we do not have an volunteer managers driving in India
and use local drivers on those expeditions.
