Principal’s message continued expectations and hopes for our young women and develop united approaches from the school and family for best future outcomes for the girls. The Year 8 and Year 10 Parent/Teacher evening will take place in the next few weeks while our Year 9 and Year 11 Parent/Teacher evening will take place in July. We look forward to seeing you at these times. School photographs are always a very popular event on the school’s calendar, the one day we don’t have to nag about correct uniform. We have now completed the initial process and the girls will be receiving the completed photos in the next few months. Thank you to our teacher coordinator, Gerard Stewart. The Transit of Venus Mr Hickey will give a presentation on the transit of Venus at 6.15pm, Monday 4 June in room 220 above the library. Following the presentation, parents and students will be invited to the oval to view the partial lunar eclipse through a telescope. The first assessment period is now well underway across the school with a variety of assessment practices ranging from informal class assessments to class tests, subject tests and with Year 11 a formal half yearly exam period. All students will receive a semester one, half yearly report detailing their progress in the next weeks either at your Parent/Teacher Night or posted home. Our Year 7 and Year 9 have now participated in the national NAPLAN tests. We hear many different comments about the value or otherwise of these tests. By using the results of these tests as a diagnostic tool we can, though, use them to benefit our young women. NAPLAN is not a test with winners or losers. Unfortunately an ill-informed media misuses and misinterprets these tests on the MySchool website to create inaccurate league tables. We at Randwick Girls and Boys know this all too well. It’s intention is not to grade individuals or compare one student to another, but rather to show those areas where an individual student is performing well and those areas where a student will benefit from extra help on a given day – a snapshot only. Our learning support program is using our NAPLAN results together with the many other assessment processes our teachers use to ensure that our students’ learning needs are best met. Regards Heather Emerson Transits of Venus occur in a pattern that repeats every 243 years with pairs of transits 8 years apart separated by gaps of 121½ years and 105½ years. Since the phenomena was first recognised there have only been 6 transits of Venus – 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882, the most recent in 2004. The next transit of Venus is 6 June 2012. EASTER SHOW ENTERTAINMENT Entertainment Industry students recently took part in a work placement program through their involvement in the entertainment program at the Royal Easter Show. Students took part in the program by assisting with the street parade, costume characters, circus workshops, high diving displays, fan days, stage management & marshalling, as well as learning skills related to bump in/bump out, costuming & makeup. Gloria, Mae, Xantre, Sophie, Angelica, Charlotte, Kimberley, Bei Bei & Tori participated in the program, and congratulations to the six students who successfully completed their compulsory workplacement requirements. Special thanks to Entertainment Industry teacher Miss Posener, who helped organise the work placement & supervised the students during the program, and thanks to Mrs Posener (Deputy Principal) and Mrs Agapitos (VET Co-ordinator) who also visited the students during the show.
