Foreword the <strong>29</strong> drawings reproduced in this catalogue are the visible remainder of a lost collection that originally numbered over 800 works. Formed by Dr. Michael Berolzheimer between c. 1900 to 1937, the collection was confiscated by nazi authorities and auctioned off in two sales (1938 and 1939) in Munich. thanks to the efforts of the great-nephew and namesake of the original collector, Michael g. Berolzheimer, and the enlightened policies of the austrian state collections, the present group was restituted in 2010 to the heirs. it is the purpose of this catalogue to sketch an account, if fragmentary and tentative, of the moment in german history when Jewish participation in civic and cultural was the norm. the act of restitution provides a worthy occasion to revisit this moment as lived by two generations of the Berolzheimer family. the history of this family is closely bound up with the landscape of Bavaria; that is, Franconia and Upper Bavaria. the family name derives from the Franconian town of Markt Berolzheim. the industrial town of Fürth, near nuremberg, became the home of Daniel Berolzheimer, who in 1855 established with a partner the pencil factory Berolzheimer and illfelder, better known under the title of “adler”. Upon Daniel’s early death, the enterprise was inherited by his son, the 23 year-old heinrich Berolzheimer (1836 – 1906) who quickly manifested supreme business skills. realizing that the domestic market for pencils was well-served by the competition (the firm of Faber-castell and others), heinrich looked to america. with high tariffs there a serious burden to german exports, heinrich set up a factory – the eagle Pencil company – in “hügel am weg”, obergrainau new York in 1869. the enterprise immediately benefitted from the abundant native supply of wood as well as significant demand for writing implements. eagle developed into the leading pencil manufacturer in america. Despite these manifold successes, heinrich as a patriotic Bavarian tired of moving back and forth between the continents, and turned over the new world business to
