restituted to the heirs of Michael Berolzheimer in 2010<br />
as a pupil of the Viennese academy eduard von steinle traveled to<br />
rome in 1828. there he entered the circle of Friedrich overbeck,<br />
Philipp Veit and Joseph von Führich. Before returning to Vienna<br />
in 1833 he assisted overbeck with his fresco work in assisi. in<br />
1837 he received the commission to decorate the chapel of Burg<br />
rheineck, on the rhine near Bad Breisig, with frescoes, for one of<br />
which the present sheet is a preparatory drawing. to further his<br />
abilities in the technique of fresco painting he went to Munich in<br />
1838 to train with Peter von cornelius. in 1840, living in Frankfurt,<br />
he was granted an atelier at the städel institute. influenced by<br />
Moritz von schwind, he expanded his thematic repertoire. in 1850<br />
he was appointed professor for history painting at the städel<br />
institute, and as of 1861 he devoted himself to painting the staircase<br />
of the wallraf-richartz-Museum in cologne as well as monumental<br />
decorations for the recently completed cologne cathedral.<br />
