restituted to the heirs of Michael Berolzheimer in 2010<br />
the preparatory sketch in pencil (235 x 335 mm) is preserved<br />
in the collection of the Museum Boymans van Beuningen,<br />
rotterdam (inv. no. Dn 375/272). Further versions of the theme<br />
can be found in the Museum of <strong>Fine</strong> arts, leipzig and the Kupferstichkabinett,<br />
Berlin (for ill. see ebert 1971, p. 121, no. 108).<br />
in 1832 Bonaventura genelli received the commission to decorate<br />
the main hall of the so-called “römisches haus”, the residence<br />
of the publisher hermann härtl, in leipzig. the client proposed<br />
frescoes with mythological themes, prompting genelli to leave<br />
rome, then his current residence, to complete the assignment in<br />
leipzig. the present sheet represents one of the themes the artist<br />
intended to realize.
