the inaugural Zimbabwe Golf Awards on Thursday night
Government applauds
golfing community
SPORTS REPORTER
THE government has applauded
the Zimbabwe golfing community
for maintaining strong and professional
administration and believes
it’s the reason why the country
has continued to produce world
class golfers who continue to lift
the country’s flag high at international
events.
Speaking at the inaugural Zimbabwe
Golf Association’s inaugural
Awards Banquet held at Chapman
Golf Club on Thursday, Sport,
Arts and Culture deputy minister
Tabitha Kanengoni-Malinga said:
“In Zimbabwe, golf is a sport that
has maintained strong and professional
administration as evidenced
by the fact that it has had
little government interference,
thus enabling the sport to be
self-regulating.
“My ministry is proud of various
grassroots national sport development
strategies which starts
with humble young golf talent
identification programmes.
“These programmes include
Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association,
the Mabikacheche Rural Golf
Development, The Special Olympics
golf development, The Hatcliffe
Girls Development Trust —
which specialises on the girl child
— and ultimately, the recentlylaunched
University of Zimbabwe
Golf Scholarship.”
Also speaking at the event
were the former Mayor of Harare,
Muchadeyi Masunda, who highlighted
the fact that Harare was
endowed with some of the best
golf courses on the continent.
He highlighted that within
25km radius of Harare there are
over 14 golf courses, of which four
are Championship courses capable
of hosting internationally recognised
events.
He urged sport to be run by
people of integrity for the sector
to get the necessary sponsorships.
Speaking at the same function,
the African Golf Confederation
vice-president Obed Dube
praised the local golf community
of achieving so much with very
little resources.
He, however, encouraged local
golf administrators to learn from
other successful golf nations such
as neighbours South Africa.
The awards, which were held
under the theme Celebrating Golf
Excellence, were preceded by a
fundraising golf tournament that
was played earlier in the day at the
same venue as part of an initiative
where proceeds would be channelled
towards golf development.
BANTU ROVERS . . . . . 0
ZPC KARIBA . . . . . . . . 0
BANTU ROVERS wasted several
chances and missed on a chance
to collect maximum points from
visiting ZPC Kariba in a Castle Lager
Premier Soccer League match
at Luveve Stadium yesterday.
With the draw, the Methembe
Ndlovu-coached Tshintsha Guluva
remain stuck on position 12 on
the log table with 10 points.
Even assistant coach Mandla
“Lulu” Mpofu rued the missed
chances by his charges.
“We had 20 attempts, but no
goal. We controlled the game right
from the start and we are not happy
with the point that we got from
this game,” Mpofu said.
“It is going to be tougher and
tougher going
ahead, but we
will try and
grind out
results.
“We
lacked composure
in
this game, but
we still have 20
games to go and
60 points
to
Saul Chaminuka
play for.”
Equally perturbed was unbeaten
ZPC Kariba’s head coach Saul
Chaminuka, who said he was disappointed
with the seven draws
they have played to date.
“We are not convincing in
terms of attack. We could have
scored in the second half when
we resorted to using two strikers
and trying to catch them on the
break,” Chaminuka said.
“We have played too many
draws and we have lost a lot of
points (14).
“The seven draws are just like
four games lost and I am really
concerned. But we will be working
on attacking and we will definitely
come right.”
With the seventh draw, ZPC
Kariba temporarily dislodged
champions Dynamos, who they
are now square with on 16 points,
but the Mashonaland West
outfit has a superior goal
difference.
They leapt one rung
up the ladder to position
four awaiting the other
games that continue today.
