New nursery schools for Feldkirch
Modular nursery school system: high flexibility, short construction time,
ecologically sound performance
Floors, walls and ceilings were built with solid
wooden elements, the large windows extend
from floor to ceiling in some places.
At the heart of the Vorarlberg education
policy is the earliest possible
provision of comprehensive play
activities to our children. The need for
nursery school group accommodation
has risen sharply with the adoption by
the regional government of its latest
forward-looking nursery school education
and teaching plan. In conjunction
with the local Feldkirch council and
architects Atelier Rainer + Amann, our
response has been the development of
a modular system for the cost-effective
and rapid construction of nursery
school rooms.
pILot project successFULLy
completed
Three new modular nursery schools
have already been erected in Feldkirch
by Rhomberg as the general contractor.
The buildings are built entirely of
wood. Work on site started in June,
completion followed in October 2010.
Special characteRIstics
The wooden construction involved
the use of prefabricated wall panels
with a high-quality natural finish. This
allowed the entire wooden construction
(floors, walls and ceilings) for each
nursery school to be assembled in only
two weeks. All recesses, penetrations
and empty ducts for cables and pipes
(electrical and heating, ventilation and
sanitary fittings) were made and preinstalled
in the factory.

using dry materials –
long drying out or curing
times were therefore
avoided. A detailed construction
programme allowed different trades
to work in parallel in confined spaces
and ensured the smooth progress of
the works in the shortest possible
time. The repetition factor in the three
nursery schools led to an optimisation
of construction time and quality."

Rhomberg seeks dialoGUe with nURsery
schools
We wanted to ask the youngest in our communities for
their opinions, suggestions and ideas on the theme of living
quality to cast light on this edition of New Dimensions from
all sides.
The Feldkirch nursery school helped us in our project. The
children answered our questions about the criteria for living
quality with innumerable fascinating paintings – which did
not make it easy for us to choose the best eight for our
postcards.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all our little
artists, the organisers and nursery school teachers.
