Average wind speed at Bengalla during 1992 was 1.93 m/s. This value for the annual average wind speed was considered low and tests were carried out on the wind speed sensing components in the meteorological station. A problem in recording high wind speeds was identified, however, wind direction data from Bengalla are not in doubt. After consideration of regional wind data, an annual average wind speed of 2.6 m/s for the area has been adopted. The prevailing winds are from the southeast, south-southeast and northwest. Southeasterlies are most common in summer and autumn and northwesterlies are most common in winter. 2.5 FLORA AND FAUNA The Authorisation area comprises cleared farmland with isolated low to medium density stands of trees along BENGALLA EIS. F156 NOVEMBER 1993
2:6 drainage lines in the western part of the Authorisation. A flora and fauna study, undertaken by Envirosciences and presented in Appendix 4, showed that the natural ecology has been extensively disturbed by grazing animals and land clearing. The vegetation associations present can readily be found at other sites throughout much of the Hunter Valley. The poor diversity and lack of structural variation in the flora is reflected in the low faunal diversity observed throughout the site. No rare or endangered plant or animal species were observed during the study (species lists presented in Appendix 4) or are expected to occur on site. The conservation value of the Authorisation area is therefore low. 2.6 HYDROLOGY 2.6.1 Surface Water Drainage The natural drainage and water catchments in the Bengalla area are shown in Figure 2.6. All catchments drain in a south and southeasterly direction to the Hunter River. The Hunter River is the dominant drainage feature and its channel lies largely to the south of the Authorisation. The river flows to the southwest in a meandering channel across a well developed floodplain 1.5 to 3 km wide. The Authorisation area covers part of three catchments, see Figure 2.6. None of the catchments lie totally within the Bengalla area. Catchment 1, the largest catchment, drains from Mount Pleasant 3 km north of Bengalla. The dominant north-trending ridge in the middle of the Authorisation separates catchments 1 and 3. In the first 21 years of mining, the proposed opencut mine will intercept all three catchments: the upper portion of catchment 3, and small parts of catchments 1 and 2. Mine infrastructure will affect catchment 1. No permanently flowing water courses exist within the Bengalla area apart from the Hunter River in the southeastern corner. All other water courses in the area only flow intermittently and are generally dry. However, ponded water occurs in channels dammed for agricultural purposes. Long periods of zero flow are interrupted by short periods of discharge during periods of prolonged and/or heavy rainfall. In places, surface water flows onto the Hunter River floodplain and seeps into the alluvium rather than flowing directly into the Hunter River. Permanent water is stored in numerous farm dams on the Authorisation. Several series of diversion banks and associated dams have been constructed in the past to reduce soil erosion and control runoff in catchments 1 and 3. BENGALLA EIS. F156 NOVEMBER 1993
