Now, the university is a large, continually expanding modern campus, with many overseas students. After Aberystwyth, Swansea was one of the first universities to be set up in South Wales, and it was where I studied Metallurgy. Hopefully, this tour of the Gower Peninsular based on my life has given some insight of where I live together with a potted history of the region. By Ken Lewis 1904 Russo-Japanese War - 1905 From February 1904 until September 1905 Russia and Japan were at war in Manchuria, Greater China. Eight items that have survived this war are the main subject of this article. To put everything into perspective a very brief history of the war has been set out under the heading ‘Brief History’, those who already know these details may wish to skip this section. Following this are the details of the items of postal history, conclusion and the acknowledgements. Brief History It is known that the Russians and Japanese fought a war in the Greater China province of Manchuria beginning in February 1904. What is less widely known is that it was fought over Russia’s increasing presence in Korea and, only during the very early part of this war, there was fighting on Korean land. In 1902 the Japanese began talking with Russia about an amicable settlement regarding Korea, but all the offers, made by the Japanese, were rejected by Russia. By February 1904 the Japanese had become incensed over Russia’s lack of co-operation and broke off diplomatic relations on Saturday February 6, 1904. Two days later, at 10:30 a.m., Vice Admiral Heihachiro Togo ordered his fleet to attack the Russian ships moored in Port Arthur and Talien Bay, Dalny. This attack put Retvizan and Tsarevich (Russia’s best battleships), and the Russian cruiser Pallada out of action for many weeks, along with many minor ships. The attacking Japanese ships rejoined their fleet, which was located in the Gulf of Petchihli 20 miles off Chefoo (northern China). It was not until two days later, on Wednesday February 10, 1904, that Japan formally declared war on Russia. The Russian Tsar issued orders that the first shot was to be fired by Japan, therefore showing that Japan was the aggressor. Russia was accepted to be the more powerful of the two nations, and was expected to win the war. At the outbreak of war the Russians only had 80,000 troops in the Far East. All reinforcements of troops and materiel had to be transported halfway around the world, either by sea or the newly opened Trans- Siberian Railway, to reach the hostilities. This was not the case for Japan, whose reinforcements were only a few hundred miles away. Many historians concentrate on the Port Arthur attack as a major offensive, but this was just a feint; the real objective of the Japanese was the invasion of Korea at Chemulpo. During July and August the Japanese land forces had closed in on Port Arthur and were shelling the town. One observer likened the noise of battle to ‘intervals of ear-wrecking noise and of silence which is like that of a tomb compared to the rasp- Map 1. MA06 • the CP / le PC • 97
