CHANGE FOR THE BETTER
Another major step in the continuing improvement
of the Society’s affairs is underway. It first started in 1997
when we entered into contract with Parr & Associates to
manage our Society. At the time we needed the ability
to have a stable, timely and efficient management programme.
In 1998, we contracted out our circuit books, as
they were a major financial drain on the Society. In 1999,
we changed the format of The Canadian Philatelist to make
it more appealing to readers and advertisers, and in 2001
we started selling it on the newsstands. That same year
we introduced our Website with its award-winning online
library. For the next four years we improved our services,
our procedures, our delivery mechanisms and the
information we provide to members. I am sure you will
agree with me that these improvements have made your
membership even more worthwhile.
By 2004 it was apparent that we needed to pursue
other avenues to manage the Society. Our computer system
was archaic and was becoming more and more costly
to upkeep. Current small organization management practices
were directing us to an on-line database management
system. With the expertise we have on hand within
the Society’s management team we realized that we could
go ahead with such a system and manage it on our own.
As a result, we moved our offices to the Vincent Graves
Greene Philatelic Research Foundation premises and
brought along the other organizations that are linked to
us: TAPE and The RPSC Philatelic Research Foundation.
This is a further step to fulfilling Vinnie Greene’ s dream
of a National Philatelic Centre under one roof.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rick
Penko and Robin Harris, who have spent the last three
months putting together our new database management
system. I would also like to thank Peter Butler for
taking on the volunteer role of National Office Director
and would like to welcome Margaret Schulzke, our new
Executive Assistant, to our office management team. *

Nous franchissons une autre étape de changement dans
l’histoire de notre Société. Nous avons débuté notre voyage
en 1997 lorsque nous avons signé un contrat avec Parr &
Associates pour gérer notre Société. À cette époque nous
avions besoin d’une gestion stable, efficace et en temps. En
1998, nous avons transféré la gestion de nos carnets de vente
à une firme privée lorsque nous avons découvert qu’ils nous
causaient une perte financière accrue. En 1999, nous avons
changé le format du Philatéliste canadien pour qu’il soit plus
attrayant pour le lecteur et les annonceurs, et en 2001 nous
avons commencé à le vendre dans les kiosques à journaux. La
même année nous avons dévoilé notre site Web avec sa bibliothèque
primée d’articles en ligne. Dans les quatre années qui
ont suivi nous avons amélioré nos services, nos procédures
et leurs mécanismes de livraison ainsi que l’information que
nous rendons disponible à nos membres.
En 2004, il était apparent que nous devions changer nos
systèmes de gestion. Notre système informatique était archaïque
et nous coûtait de plus en plus cher pour le maintenir. La
pratique courante de gestion d’organisation des petits groupes
nous indiquait une approche de gestion par l’entremise
de base de données web. Avec l’expertise que nous avons
dans notre gestion nous avons décidé de créer ce système et
le gérer nous même. En conséquence nous avons déménagez
le bureau national, TAPE et la Fondation de recherche philatélique
de La SRPC dans l’édifice de la Vincent Graves Greene
Philatelic Research Foundation. C’est un pas de plus pour
accéder au rêve de Vinnie Greene d’avoir un Centre national
de philatélie au Canada sous un même toit.
