WB Yeats – No Country for Old Men 1 x 52’ Edna O’Brien; Life, Stories 1 x 52’
This documentary by award-winning director Maurice Sweeney concentrates
on the later work of the great poet and the themes that inspired him as an
ageing man.
In Ireland, Yeats is rightly regarded as the poet laureate of the new nation. In
Britain he is regarded as a romantic, Irish dreamer. But the reality of his life
and work after Ireland had won independence was a good deal earthier, and
a good deal more interesting.
In looking at Yeats’ later life and work, the film reveals a very different Yeats
to the poet we learnt about in school.
A Hot Shot Films Production for RTÉ
Now in her eighty-second year and in advance of publishing her memoirs,
Edna O’Brien opened her home and her heart to documentary filmmakers
for this intimate portrait of her. The resulting film gives unprecedented
insight, encompassing the sweep of a long career, into one of the great
survivors in Irish literature.
O’Brien’s journey from the west of Ireland to the centre of literary life in
London has involved rebellion, censorship, elopement, motherhood, divorce,
custody battles and the rearing of two sons as a single mother as well
as a glittering social life and a growing profile as a public personality and
commentator.
But throughout most of these dramatic developments, O’Brien wrote
consistently to produce an impressive and unique body of work earning her
status as the doyenne of Irish letters. In this film, we are given a privileged
glimpse of O’Brien’s more private life, her writing process and rituals.
when muhammad Ali met the irish 1 x 52’ we got game 1 x 52’ HD
When Muhammad Ali met the Irish is a hugely entertaining documentary
with a glorious cast of characters. The film spins an irresistible tale about
how the world’s greatest boxer came to fight in Ireland in 1972 and
interweaves Ali’s story with fascinating tales of promoter ‘Butty’ Sugrue (the
‘World’s Strongest Publican’), opponent ‘Blue’ Lewis (an ex-con from Detroit
trying to go straight) and a wealth of other entertaining tricksters whom Ali
invariably attracted. The IFTA-winning film is “evocative, informative, wholly
engaging and manages a nicely wry tone before finally becoming genuinely
elegiac,” (Irish Independent).
What happened Irish basketball in the 1980s was a kind of sporting miracle,
in this one hour documentary we recall when basketball in Ireland became
big and sexy, filled with unique larger than life characters, as black America
and small-town Ireland collided. This is not just a basketball documentary
but a fascinating insight and social history of a recession-hit country that
was enthused by the exploits of basketball stars from the States. Featuring
unique archive and interviews with all the key protagonists of these glory
days, this journey takes us from the basketball outposts of Cork and Kerry
right to the heartlands of the game, the USA.
the heart of the matter 1 x 52’ the gym 1 x 52’
Every day more than 10 lives are lost in Ireland as a result of a sudden heart
attack. In fact, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is responsible for 1 in every 3
deaths in Ireland.
It is clear that many of us walk around, unaware that there is a time-bomb
ticking in our chests. At the centre of this documentary is one of Ireland’s
most successful entrepreneurs – David Bobbett. In 2011, a routine medical
revealed to David that his odds of suffering a heart attack had soared
through the roof. Despite boasting exceptional levels of fitness and a
healthy diet, he was told that he had a 1 in 4 chance of suffering a heart
attack in the next year.
The Gym follows the daily goings-on of four different gyms across Ireland, and
the people who choose to work out in them.
Over the course of one day, we get sweaty in Ireland’s toning temples, meeting
gym devotees of every shape and size. We find out exactly why people want
to tame their tummies on the treadmill or find peace of mind pumping weights.
In a sort of homage to gym culture here, we find out that there’s a lot more to
working out than simply winding up your wobbly bits...
An RTÉ Production
Since this bombshell, David has applied his unique analytical brain to the
subject and dedicated huge amounts of time and energy researching heart
disease, its extent, its diagnoses, and its treatments. The results of his
quest were startling and David is now on a mission to tell the world about
his discoveries. He wants to tell the world that there is a better way of
identifying and tackling heart disease.
personality, not traditionally associated with a blushing bride-to-be, change
In truth Jennifer hasn’t really thought that much about her wedding. The whole
