BHC’s Tree-Mend-Us
Beginnings
Over the last several years, BHC has been a leader among Baltimore
Congregations in addressing environmental concerns. Caring for the Earth is
a clear Jewish imperative drawn from the very foundation of our tradition.
The Torah begins not with humanity, but with a story about the rest of
Creation, teaching us that if humanity is to fulfill its potential “in the image
of God,” we must have a world in which to do so.
On Sunday, April 3, No o N, BHC will again lead the way as we partner with
Bluewater Baltimore and TreeBaltimore in fortifying our city’s tree canopy,
the part of the city that is shaded by trees. American Forests recommends
that healthy cities need a 40% tree canopy. Baltimore’s current canopy is only
about 27.4%.
At the event we’re calling “Tree-Mend-Us Beginnings,” TreeBaltimore and
Bluewater will provide us with 40 beautiful young trees to plant throughout
our property. We will fill in existing lines on the Slade Avenue side as well as
open spaces on Park Heights Avenue.
My favorite part of the project will be the creation of a grove/sacred space
that we can use for worship, educational gatherings and more.
Since maintaining all those new trees will be significant work, we’re
encouraging families and individuals to adopt a tree and commit to helping
water and care for it over the next couple of years. More details on how to
do that will follow, but if you’d like to be one of our caretakers, please let me
know.
“Tree-Mend-Us Beginnings” will also need lots of volunteers to get the
planting done. Tools and materials will be provided, as well as lunch and
babysitting!
Also on April 3, TreeBaltimore and Bluewater Baltimore will have FREE
trees available to anyone who wants to plant one at their home, as well as
advice about how to do it.
It’s going to be Tree-mend-us.
We Are One People
A Message from the President
Almost a year has passed since I was installed
as President of BHC. It is amazing how quickly
the time has flown. I realize that I am prouder
today of our Congregation than I have ever
been.
It is remarkable how dedicated our
membership is. I can truly say that whenever a need arises,
Congregants have stepped up to address our concerns. Night of
the Stars, Saturday, April 2, 8 p m, will prove to be a great success,
not only financially, but in terms of participation. The committee
meetings I have attended show how vibrant and dedicated our
members are; you won’t want to miss this event!
Annual Giving, so necessary to our Congregation, has been very
successful this year. Not only do we have more Congregants giving
than ever before, but a large percentage, recognizing our need,
have increased the size of their gifts. This beneficence allows us
to ensure that all who are in need receive Congregational services,
especially our children.
A new endeavor for BHC will be the opening of an infant care
program, which was approved by the Board of Electors at its
February meeting. The advisory committee, ably chaired by Past
President Ed Perl, is working diligently to see that this program
will live up to the excellence that members and non-members
alike expect and demand. Many Congregants, learning of our
plans, responded immediately with donations to cover all the costs
incurred in opening the center.
I have come to appreciate in my year as President that BHC is a
family. Like all Jews, we have varying opinions on every issue, yet
when the chips are down, our family gathers together to support
each other. No wonder I am proud of our Congregation and proud
to be its President.
Good Night Shabbat
On February 26, more than 100 parents and
It was the second time we held the special event for families
great success.
Our theme was beach party, and we had snow cones, sand art,
followed by a pizza dinner and a great Havdalah service led by Rabbi
Sachs-Kohen and Cantorial Soloist Dave Berenhaus.
Join us for the fun again on Saturday April 16, 5:30-7 p m at our
To Our Beloved BHC Family,
So many of you have written expressing the inadequacy of
words at times such as that through which we are going right
now. Similarly, we cannot at all find language suitable for
conveying how much comfort we have drawn from the visits,
notes and calls with which you have reached out to us in these
past weeks.
Losing Mitch so suddenly has been a tragedy and a trauma
from which it is hard to imagine recovering. Nonetheless, we
have begun the first, hesitant steps along that road, supported
in great part by the encouragement and embrace of family
and friends. To you who watched Mitch grow, who traveled
with him through our three wonderful BHC schools and who
celebrated with our family the several simchahs shared during
our Baltimore years, including his Bar Mitzvah, we thank you
for sharing our happy memories of his warmth, enthusiasm
and loving kindness. You have returned these gifts to us in
full and they reconnect us to sacred fragments of the years we
spent there with him. While we may not be able to thank each
of you individually, please know that each of you has been
mal-akh, an angel of healing, as we rebuild our family life.
May God bless you for your kindness to us.
Book Burial
Rabbi Busch will accompany Religious School 7th grade students
to our Belair Road Cemetery on Sunday, April 3, 9:45 a m, where he
will lead them in a Genezia Ceremony. During the ceremony, old
books and ritual objects that have been collected all year will be
“laid to rest” with all the respect given to the burial of a person.
BHC Congregants who have items for burial can drop them at the
Temple Office by April 1.
Historically, the Genezia was usually a room attached to the
synagogue where books and ritual objects were buried when
they wore out and could no longer be used in the normal ritual.
Jewish people value learning as a highest priority and learning
is symbolized by the study of books. We bestow respect on this
primary source of knowledge during a book’s usable days and we
show respect when it deteriorates beyond use at a Genezia, or Book
Burial, ceremony.
Praying with Lior
Join Family Concerns for the award-winning movie Praying with
Lior, Sunday, May 1, 9:30 a m. All Congregants, including children
in junior high and high school, are welcome to a free continental
breakfast prior to watching this engrossing, wrenching and tender
documentary film. RSVP to Carol J. Caplan, 410-764-1587, ext. 270,
or carolcjca@comcast.net.
Praying with Lior introduces Lior Liebling, also called “the little
rebbe.” Lior has Down Syndrome, and has spent his entire life praying
with utter abandon. Is he a “spiritual genius” or simply the vessel
that contains everyone’s unfulfilled wishes and expectations? Lior
lost his mother at age six, and her words and spirit hover over the
film. While everyone agrees Lior is closer to God, he’s also a burden,
a best friend, an inspiration, and an embarrassment, depending on
which family member is speaking. As Lior approaches Bar Mitzvah,
the Jewish coming-of-age ceremony, different characters provide
a window into life spent “praying with Lior.” The movie poses
difficult questions such as what is “disability” and who really talks
to God? Told with intimacy and humor, this “is a family story, a
triumph story, a grief story, a divinely-inspired story.”
Yom HaAtzma’ut Quick Fact
Many Jewish Americans celebrate Israel’s
independence on Yom HaAtzma’ut. It
commemorates when David Ben-Gurion,
who was Israel’s first prime minister,
publicly read the Israel’s Declaration
of Independence on May 14, 1948.
According to the Jewish calendar, this was the fifth day of Iyar, the
eighth month of the civil year, in the year 5708. Celebrations will
take place in many Jewish organizations throughout the United
States on Tuesday, May 10.
Award Honorees
Join us as we celebrate with award co-recipients Sally Palmbaum
and Mose Ottenheimer, 2nd, on Friday, May 6, 5 p m, at BHC’s
Annual Meeting.
On any given day, weekday or
weekend, you’ll find Sally Palmbaum at
BHC. As Assistant to BHC’s Executive
Director, Jo Ann Windman, Sally works
hard for our Congregation. As Jo Ann
states, “Sally handles her workload
with amazing ease. One of the reasons
I accepted this position was knowing
Sally would be by my side, for which I
am most grateful.” But Sally isn’t just a
paid employee. She is a dedicated
volunteer and a life-long member of BHC. Sixty-five years to be
exact. As she states, “I was born into it.”
Although Sally was confirmed at BHC, there was a time in Sally’s
life when she moved away from religion. It was her nephew’s
commitment to becoming a rabbi, that motivated Sally to really
become involved again twelve years ago. That decision changed
her.
Suffering throughout her life from an eating disorder and
depression, Sally found acceptance at BHC. “I really found my true
self here. BHC accepted me for who I am. They liked me even when I
was fat. They didn’t care.” Sally laughed as she made that statement,
as if it didn’t have any meaning to her. But it did. That acceptance
helped her to change her life and to overcome tremendous personal
obstacles to become the woman she is today.
Sally is an incredible person with integrity and an unbelievable
dedication. She’s served as a member of the Board of Electors, Day
School Board, Sisterhood Board, and co-chaired Yom Mitzvah as well
as the Worship Committee. As an adult she studied hard, attending
Torah Talk, Sisterhood Study Classes, took a Hebrew refresher
course, a Trope class and became an Adult Bat Mitzvah in 2000.
Besides her involvement with BHC, there are three passions
that Sally is committed to: family, feeding the hungry and animals.
Sally lights up when she talks about her great-nephew, the rabbi’s
son, Noah, the “Passover Baby” featured on page 5. Sally is equally
committed to contributing to the Maryland SPCA, helping Our
Daily Bread and coordinating the knitting of baby blankets for Sinai
Hospital. In addtion, Sally was a dedicated volunteer for 15 years at
Center Stage for the Baltimore Sun Radio Auction. When she’s not
busy volunteering or with the day to day work life at BHC, you’ll find
Sally working out daily, gardening, listening to classical music and
reading voraciously.
Sally, who also helps proof this Bulletin, after reading this article
made the comment, “This makes me sound like such a goodie-two
shoes. I don’t feel that way. It’s just who I am. It’s what I do.” No
doubt Sally. We’re privileged to work with you and honor you with
the Carol J. Caplan Service and Commitment Award on May 6.

Choices from the Heart
In February, as I co-led an empathy training
experience for our 5th and 7th Grade students
on how it feels to be different, I was charged with the task of
connecting the students to the Jewish belief about people with
disabilities. It was a quote from Albus Dumbledore, a character
from Harry Potter, that helped me convey this to the students and
connect them to one of our greatest leaders:
“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our
abilities.”
Moses is one of the best examples of this quote that I can
find. It is well-documented that Moses had a stutter or speech
impediment. Even with his difference he chose to go and stand up
to Pharaoh. It is because of this choice that we look up to him. He
did not let his abilities or lack thereof get in his way of something
in which he believed.
How many times in our lives have we been told that we aren’t
good enough or can’t do something because we just don’t have
the ability? This quote and Moses’ story proves that if you want
something badly enough, your ability does not matter.
The choices we make in life are our own and no matter how
great or weak our abilities are we should encourage our children to
make choices from their heart and work hard for what they believe
in.
This Passover, share with someone at your seder a choice you
made in your life that shows who you truly are.
DS Day School Doings
A Fish in the Washtub
Passover is my favorite holiday. When I was a child I watched my grandfather daven, hoping he did not keel over after
hours of chanting. He never did. We drank some Manischewitz, sang Dayenu, and otherwise chilled out at the kids’
table.
The biggest mystery to me was why my grandmother kept
fish in the washtub in her basement. Finally, I asked her, and I
learned that it was what she used to make gefilte fish; they were
not her pets as I had imagined. Today’s children have questions
as well, and while the traditions may have changed a bit, there
are still wonders to impart every year. At the Day School we love
the opportunity to teach our children about the holiday and its
meaning. We have model seders, special treats and games, and
our yearly “international charoset” event. Our hope is to instill in
children a love and respect for tradition and ritual, and to infuse it
with meaning and creativity.
I envision that 20 years from now I will be invited to the home
of a grown-up Day School graduate, and watch him/her impart the
customs to his/her own children, who will ask their own questions.
L’dor v’dor. My wishes to all for a healthy and meaningful Passover
holiday.
We are also accepting applications for our fun summer
children 18 months through pre-kindergarten age.
Brotherhood News
What’s It All About, Alfie?
Building community is what it’s all about. We all
know that Brotherhood supports the Temple by
providing auxiliary programs and services to help bring life to BHC.
However, these days, whether it is at work, home or Temple, we are
all being asked to do more with less.
Both the men’s and women’s auxiliaries are ultimately working
toward the same goal and each is working with fewer resources.
Sometimes the gender separated effort, for an otherwise gender
neutral program, is just too thin of a willing population to fill a
room. Even worse, the event plans are scrapped.
I have found that men are reluctant to attend programs
sponsored by Sisterhood and women often feel the same way about
attending Brotherhood events. The singular gender sponsorship
seems to send a message of exclusion, even if the program is gender
neutral.
This is why I am supporting cross-population participation
between Brotherhood and Sisterhood events; so that we can do
more with less. Together we can make a sandwich of service called
B.L.T, Bringing Life to Temple and no one will be left in a pickle.
Bon appetit!
Perpetual Memorials
Pay tribute to those
who blessed us in life
and continue to bless us
through memory.
BHC makes it possible to establish a
Perpetual Memorial for everlasting
remembrance. A page in the special
leather-bound books located in our
Sanctuary may be dedicated as a
memorial for your loved ones. Yahrzeit
notification will be sent annually and
your loved one’s name will be listed
in the Temple Bulletin and the Shabbat
Supplement. For information, contact
Francie Gill, 410-764-1587, ext. 226, or
