From The Clergy
If You Build It,
We Will Come
Growing up, Sukkot was a pretty forgettable holiday. I think someone put up a sukkah
outside the back door of our Temple, and I’m pretty sure I remember eating snacks
out there during Sunday School. That’s the sum total of my childhood resonances
with the holiday that in ancient days was so important it was referred to as THE
Festival.
Now, however, Sukkot has become one of my favorite holidays and clearly not
because of my childhood memories. Instead I love Sukkot because
a) It’s so much fun to build and decorate a sukkah;
b) The symbolism of the sukkah is so profound and so tangible; and
c) Even though I only manage to eat with my family in it one or two nights, it
never fails to be a wonderful gathering place for friends and neighbors.
Because we suspect that not everyone at BHC knows or agrees with my three
reasons for loving Sukkot, this is the year we’re going to change all that.
Do you build a sukkah at your house? If so, we want to know about it. Either Rabbi
Busch or I or Cantors Solomon or Sacks will visit every single home sukkah in the
Congregation during Sukkot this year. Doesn’t matter if it’s plain or fancy, wood,
pvc or aluminum, cobbled together or expertly crafted – we’re in! Email ipowell@
bhcong.org if you want a clergy visit and we will get you on the schedule! If you’ve
never built one before, check out this website for easy and inexpensive kits:
www.sukkahproject.com.
Sukkot was a powerful holiday not only in ancient days, but also today because
it speaks clearly to our modern existence. Comparing Sukkot with the other
pilgrimage holidays of Passover and Shavuot, Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin says, “Sukkot is
about the journey. It is the holiday that best symbolizes where most of us are most
of the time: somewhere in between, midway, sometimes moving, sometimes stuck,
always heading – we hope – in the right direction. It reminds us that the way we
get somewhere, what we do and learn along the way, where we detour and where
we pause, whom we meet and whom we travel with, are as essential to the journey
as the arrival.”
Spend a night or two eating under the stars with a whole bunch of friends or a
couple of close ones. Talk about the journey you’re on and take a moment to reflect
on life’s fragility and potential. Build yourself a sukkah…and we will come!
Just Say
Hello!
YK Afternoon Reflections
Join BHC members Judy Macks and Ted Williams as they present
their “Journey through Judaism” on Saturday, October 8, 2:45 p m,
Yom Kippur Afternoon Worship. The following is an excerpt written
by Ted Williams:
“My journey through Judaism unofficially started as a young boy
growing up in the 1950s and 1960s in Turner Station, during the
height of segregation. During that time, African Americans were
segregated in every phase of American life. Nonetheless, the Jewish
business district was open to blacks and I spent countless hours
hanging out in the Lombard and Gay Street corridors. I was struck
most profoundly by the positive way in which Jewish proprietors
interacted with blacks. There was a sense of respect, especially
for the elderly of our community that I did not see exhibited in
the larger external community. I later came to understand that
these ‘loving acts of kindness’ were an integral part of Jewish life
and practice. Thus, I had developed a very fond appreciation for
the Jewish community. This interaction would ultimately have a
profound positive impact upon my thinking. At this point, one
might say that I was developing a real-time religious critique of
Judaism and Christianity.
As I grew into young adulthood and became more involved in
things religious and spiritual, I developed an insatiable appetite
for the truth. I enrolled in seminary and ultimately became an
ordained clergy. Contrary to what I had been told I discovered that
the Tanach, far from being an old testament, was a vibrant and
life-giving force for good. I began keeping the Jewish dietary laws,
honoring Shabbat and viewing the world from a Jewish perspective.
This led to my decision to give my life completely to G-d and to
officially become a ‘Jew by Choice.’ As a Jew by Choice, I see myself
totally connected to God, the Jewish people, the State of Israel and
to the goal of Tikkun Olam.
Everything that I am today, my accomplishments and spiritual
development have come through the teachings of Judaism. Thus,
for me Judaism is my life’s blood and the spiritual umbilical cord
to the throne of God.”
Welcoming Efforts
A Message from the President
They say “come to Maryland and you can
experience a variety of topography and
weather.” I did not realize that this also
applied to phenomena of nature as well.
August brought us a couple of interesting
challenges: an earthquake and a hurricane,
with its continuing electrical problems.
Naturally, after both events, they were the main topics of
conversation. At a store or simply talking to someone on the street,
one described where they were during the earthquake. With the
hurricane, everyone was commiserating over the lack of electrical
service and its inconvenience. We talked with complete strangers
as if they were long-lost friends. It’s amazing how events like these
trigger our natural inclinations to be friendly.
This inclination should be extended to our Congregational
family as well. BHC’s Membership Committee is starting a new
campaign – “Just Say Hello.” The High Holy Days are a perfect
time to do this. In our liturgy we talk about our being strangers in
the land of Egypt. It is incumbent upon us to be welcoming, not
only to our fellow Congregants, but to the strangers in our midst.
We are the ambassadors of goodwill who will help to make BHC
a second home to all. The Membership Committee, under the
leadership of Marlyn O’Mansky and Barbi Hyman, will be wearing
big yellow buttons to identify themselves at Rosh Hashanah Under
the Stars. Please join them in their welcoming efforts. At this time
of reflection and introspection, make this welcoming effort a part
of your daily life.
We are also reminded at this time of year of the financial
needs of our Congregation. The Annual Giving campaign has been
successful because of the generosity of our members. We are again
asking you to respond generously when solicited, so that BHC can
continue to provide the outstanding services and educational
programs to all of our members, both young and young at heart.
The Secret of Business
Congregational businesses and professionals. We aim to support
his webpage, it states, “Mr. Basu is one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s
most recognizable economists, in part because of his consulting work
on behalf of numerous clients, including prominent developers,
bankers, brokerage houses, energy suppliers and law firms. On
behalf of government agencies and non-profit organizations, Mr.
Basu has written several high-profile economic development
strategies.”
DS Day School Doings
Enriching Lives
One descriptor The Day School uses is: “A Small
School that Makes a Big Difference.” Generally Gerri Chizeck
this is interpreted as a school whose size and
program create students who excel academically, grow personally,
and pursue rich and varied interests.
This year, our students are eager to expand that vision to
focus on—individually, in groups and as a school—making a
difference. A fundamental value in our program, pursuing justice
and righteousness, is something we inculcate in our children from
early childhood on up. In an age appropriate way, our students
choose to enrich the lives of their classmates, friends, families and
people in the community and world.
As individuals, students are choosing advocacy projects, Bar
and Bat Mitzvah projects and personal interest projects. Recently,
one of our 7th graders, Barrett Ozga, had as his Bar Mitzvah theme
“Keeping the Mitzvah in Bar Mitzvah.” Last year’s advocacy class
students, now 8th graders, are continuing the projects they began,
ranging from feeding the hungry to supporting local and national
organizations that prevent extinction of animals.
In honor of Rosh Hashanah, each class/level commited to a
mitzvah or tzedakah project. We celebrated the world’s birthday
by dedicating ourselves to repairing the world, Tikkun Olam. In
addition, on Fridays the students bring Tzedakah money, which
is used for everything from emergency aid for those who have
suffered national disasters to supporting groups in Israel such as
“birthday angels,” who give birthday parties for children who could
not otherwise afford a celebration.
Adding to the culture of giving, Day School students learn that
making a difference is a daily task, caring for one another. The
Second Step social skills program enhances our Judaic program
of teaching values and ethics by encouraging students to develop
empathy, learn skills for conflict resolution, anger management
and cooperation with others.
This emphasis helps to create an environment that is intimate,
caring, and nurturing, with close relationships among peers,
between grade levels and with faculty. It creates a learning
environment where there are no obstacles to progressing and
excelling as students feel safe and known.
It also creates graduates who wish to give back. A favorite
moment from this fall is a visit from an alum, Sam Frallicciardi.
Entering college this year in Pennsylvania, Sam has chosen to teach
religious school at Temple Ohev Sholom in Harrisburg and to advise
their youth group. As he hugged his former Day School teachers,
they kvelled with pride and knew that they would be hearing more
great things about his future.
Wishing everyone a prosperous year of learning and growing,
Six early childhood centers affiliated with the
Center for Jewish Education have formed a group,
under the direction of DJ Schneider Jensen,
Director of Early Childhood Services for the
CJE, to promote quality education for all young
children. Based on current brain development
research, the philosophy of this exciting coalition
is that children learn best through an emergent,
child centered curriculum. Children who are Sharon Edlow
free to explore their environment, ask questions
and are guided by well trained teachers, become active, creative
learners. We are proud to be part of this group which has chosen
the name JPlay. Look for our table at the Ultimate Block Party on
Sunday, October 2 at Rash Field.
The school year is off to a great start and we would love to
show off our newly painted lobby and our activity-filled classrooms.
Family Reflection
The High Holy Days are a time for personal
reflection over the past year. We spend extra time
contemplating how we have acted with friends,
strangers, and ourselves. Beyond personal reflection, the High Holy
Days provide our community with an opportunity to contemplate
the dynamics, actions, and goals of our family.
How does your family walk in the world? What could your family
do this year to strengthen the world? How could you be a better
parent, sister, brother, grandparent, etc…?
These questions are not easy, so I encourage you to set aside some
family time to discuss these questions and more. One opportunity
for you to interact with your family is at the YK Family Experience
on Saturday, October 8, 4:30 p m. You will have the opportunity to
do an art project that helps you view the perception that you have
of yourself. This activity will be a great lead into a discussion about
your family. We hope to see you there!
Rock and Row
Yeshiva University decided to field a crew team.
Unfortunately, they lost race after race. They
practiced for hours every day, but never managed
to come in any better than dead last.
The Rosh Yeshiva finally decided to send Yankel to spy on the
Harvard team. So Yankel schlepped off to Cambridge and hid in the
bullrushes off the Charles River, from where he carefully watched
the Harvard team as they practiced. Yankel finally returned to
Yeshiva. “I have figured out their secret,” he announced.
“They have eight guys rowing and only one guy shouting.”
Leadership is about ideas, values and philosophy. These are
mine: At the center is the president; extending out from there is the
Board; connected to them are the general membership followed by
the Congregation at large. Although I am in command, I am not in
control. Control is in the hands of the Board to form committees,
take responsibility and accomplish goals. Our goals are routine as
well as far-reaching. Committees can include general members as
well as Congregants. Oversight is at the discretion of the Executive
Board and ultimately the president. It is a model of reverse control
flow. The people are empowered but must row to make speed. As
president, perhaps I have rocked the boat, but I have also realized
Yankel’s secret. I am asking for everyone’s help to win the race.
Perpetual Memorials
Pay tribute to those
who blessed us in life
and continue
to bless us
through memory.
BHC makes it possible to establish a
Perpetual Memorial for everlasting
remembrance. A page in the special
leather-bound books located in our
Sanctuary may be dedicated as a
memorial for your loved ones. Yahrzeit
notification will be sent annually and
your loved one’s name will be listed
in the Temple Bulletin and the Shabbat
Supplement. For information, contact
