From The Clergy
Seeming familiar
in Jerusalem
You used to be able to tell. . .As you walked down the street in Jerusalem, you
used to be able to tell if the person walking toward you was from Israel or
the United States. Often now, I find myself guessing whether I will hear the
couple strolling my way speaking Hebrew or English. This cultural blurring
is not uniquely Israeli, but a by-product of the times. Having spent the last
week of February in Israel, I was taken, yet again, by the collage of similarities
between Israel and the United States.
Beyond the commonalities of brand names and fashion, people in both
countries are understandably caught up in discussions of global economic
difficulties. Curiosity regarding President Obama, his approach to Iraq and
Afghanistan, among other policies, are part of common dialogue in Israel as
well as here. A briefing at the Foreign Ministry brought home the dangers of
Iran, in even stronger terms than our news coverage here. However, differences
still abound as our brothers and sisters acutely feel the complexities and
challenges of dealing with Gaza, Hamas, the territories, and the Palestinian
Authority. Our nation is at war and we are able to focus solely on our economic
concerns. Their nation faces ongoing conflict, and they still have to deal with
the economy, health care, and, while I was there in February, the Israeli postelection
dynamics of forming a new governing coalition.
You used to be able to tell the difference between Israelis and Americans,
but now many of us look similar. Truthfully, we deal with different life
challenges, while facing similar human dilemmas. Sadly, many American Jews
feel far more distant from Israel today than did their peers a few decades ago.
This gap has grown around changes in American Jewish life and patterns, and
with the development, challenges, and successes of Israel over the decades.
Engaging with Israel and her citizens does not require one specific political
position, but rather an openness to the ongoing journey of the Jewish people.
The closer one gets to the issues on the ground in Israel, the more committed
one hopefully feels about the dynamism of Israel’s polity and culture in
dealing with those very issues. I look forward to future trips to Israel with
BHC, to discussions regarding Israel, and to hearing Hebrew spoken by those
who look familiar and less familiar.
Goodwin’s Generous Gift for Multi-Use Venue
Through the generosity of Douglas & Hilda Perl Goodwin, the Rothschild Center will
undergo a renovation this summer. The space will be converted to a medium size worship
space and social hall and will be renamed The Douglas and Hilda Perl Goodwin Center.
The Congregation appreciates the generosity of the Goodwins in helping to create this
multi-use center.
Happy Passover
A Message from the President
I’d like to wish everybody a wonderful Passover.
It is our best Jewish family get-together, a time to
eat well and to reflect on our wonderful traditions
and religious freedom. For most of us it has been
a difficult year economically, but I venture to
say that even with all of our cutbacks, nobody is
cancelling their Seder.
This has been a fabulous year for BHC, with
renewed enthusiasm and the addition of Rabbi
Busch and Cantor Solomon to our already incredible clergy team.
However, like most of us, the Congregation has suffered with the
economic downturn; with all of you supporting us the best you can
financially and with your increasing participation in all that BHC
has to offer, we will get through these difficult times.
As we enjoy our Jewish heritage in our homes, let us not forget
that the Synagogue is the pillar of our Jewish community that has
sustained our faith through the education of our children and
providing meaningful worship. BHC clergy and lay community are
always available to support each of us through difficult times.
Enjoy Passover, be thankful for your religious freedom, and
don’t forget that it is your Synagogue that provides an added
dimension to your spiritual, family and community life.
Carl S. Silverman, Esq., and
BHC Ushers Honored
When President
Ed Perl called Carl
Silverman and
told him he was
the recipient of
this year’s Carol J.
Caplan Service and
Commitment Award,
Carl couldn’t have
been more flattered,
delighted and surprised to receive the award
named for his friend and fellow Congregant,
“that many of us have become privileged to
know, observe, work with, respect, and grow
to love over the years—making the award that
much sweeter!”
Carl’s path certainly honors Carol’s
tradition of service, commitment and
devotion to BHC. One of his principle
accomplishments as BHC president was the
establishment of The Day School. He served
as both president and first vice president of
BHC and The Day School and vice president
of BHC, as well as serving on virtually every
standing committee at BHC over the years.
Since completing his term as president
of BHC in 1992, Carl assumed the role as our
Congregation’s General Counsel, and has
served in the role ever since. In addition to
his law practice in Baltimore, primarily in
employment relations advice and counsel
and workplace litigation, Carl has served
as a board member and officer of the
National Association of Parliamentarians,
vice-president and supporter of Shoshana
S. Cardin School, member of the Board of
Trustees of the Union for Reform Judaism
(URJ) and its executive committee, and
vice president and board member of the
Middle Atlantic Council of the URJ, and on
the Maryland State Bar Association Board of
Governors as parliamentarian.
It’s the involvement, caring, attention
well-placed, and Tikkun Olam that drives Carl
and takes us to a better place. “I treasure my
membership in, opportunities to serve for,
and most of all the friendships I have made
with Congregants and the professional staff
at BHC, as well as others in the organizations
that I have been involved with and served.”
Join us with Carl’s wife, Carol, and sons,
Ben and Andy, on Friday, May 1, 5 p m, as we
honor this man who has strengthened the
link “from generation to generation” with
his vision, leadership and insight.
May’s issue of the Bulletin will honor
award co-recipients, BHC Ushers.
From a Seed a Garden Grows
An 8,775 square foot garden growing
squashes, gourds, corn, and eventually apple
trees will soon be underway, beautifully
designed and guided by master gardener
Larry Kloze and his wife Vicki. Heidi
Butterworth, Day School Science teacher,
planted the seed to have a children’s garden.
Facilities Manager Victor Davis suggested
growing a garden of fall vegetables to be
used for BHC’s Sukkot. Plans evolved with
the support of The Green Team.
The garden will be located behind the
athletic field, taking advantage of the
terrain and water supply, with minimum
maintenance needed. Ground was broken in
March, seeds will be planted in May, and the
vegetables will be harvested in September.
Veteran gardeners, those who love
working outside, or anyone looking for a
meaningful project are invited to join in—
including all Congregants ages 16 and older,
and children ages 13 to 15, if accompanied
Having moved to Baltimore from sunny southern California, the prospect of April is thrilling to me. Spring, warmer
weather, the season of childhood wonder, the blooming of forsythia, pussy willow, and flowers, warm rain……
There are other reasons that April is eagerly anticipated. The first is Passover. Hands down, Passover is my favorite holiday. Its depth
of meaning and the injunction that we need to experience the holiday as if we, too, were slaves in Egypt, resonates with every age, each
year. Not only do we have model Seders, we learn and study about the history of the holiday, about freedom, slavery, and our personal
versions of Exodus. It also reminds us of the different kinds of children (the four sons), and how we respond to each differently according
to needs and personalities.
Another special time is our Fine Arts Festival, on Thursday, April 30, 5:30 p m. The Fine Arts Festival is a wonderful occasion, showcasing
our music, visual art and drama programs, and integrated programs of study. There will be exhibits, performances, refreshments, and a
silent auction. The silent auction is the school PTO’s major fundrasing activity, bringing in funds to enhance our school. Last year’s funds
bought our new Smartboards and equipment for our Physical Education, Art and Music programs. If you can contribute a service or item
to our auction, contact the school office, 410-764-1867, ext. 312—and join in the festivities on April 30.
Lastly, it’s not too late to come and tour the Day School and its E.B. Hirsh Early Childhood Center for next year’s programs. We are
holding summer programs as well, including an 8-week early childhood program, a three week June school for grades 1-7, and a two week
August sports camp with our extraordinary coach, Ed Adams. The camps are open to all students who qualify. For more information,
Enrichment and Enjoyment
Etz Chaim continues to successfully engage
families in fun and educational programs. Our
first grade families experienced a hands-on activity called “Tu
B’Shevat in the Valley.” We met upstairs at Wegmans on a Sunday
afternoon, enjoyed lunch together and then reviewed a list of Tu
B’Shevat food items before shopping for them as families. We then
gathered back upstairs for a brief study session on the significance
of the purchased products, along with suggestions for family
activities to reinforce the values taught. Each family then compiled
its own Tu B’Shevat seder plate to take home and use on the holy day.
A great time was had by all!
Fourth grade families joined together at BHC late Shabbat
afternoon to learn havdalah melodies with Disco Dave Berenhaus,
then worked with me to write, as families, creative readings about
havdalah. These readings were then shared with the group as part of
our beautiful havdalah ceremony. To wrap up the evening, we went
to Fuddrucker’s for a delicious dinner and a chance to socialize.
As was the case last year, families stayed for hours and had a great
time, with both students and parents forming bonds!
Our fifth grade families were lucky enough to have two great
programs. First, we gathered at the home of Aimée and Dr. Steven
Adashek for an evening of fun and learning. We began with a
beautiful havdalah ceremony, followed by a great talk by Steve, who
is a certified Reform Mohel, on the topic of Brit Milah (Bris). Families
were able to learn how a ceremony is conducted, participate in the
rituals (no actual circumcision was performed!) and ask questions
about the customs, all in the comfort of the Adashek’s beautiful
home! We then enjoyed refreshments, and adults talked while kids
played together. What a fun and interesting evening, thanks to the
Adasheks and our great families!
The second program was a Conversion panel. On a Sunday
morning, five members of our Congregation (Cantor Ann G.
Sacks, Captain Heber Watts, Jr., Lee Smothers, Michael Dye
and Becky Gutin—all Jews-by-Choice), answered questions about
their conversion experiences, specially prepared by our students.
Parents also were able to ask questions and participate in the
one-hour session. The format was simple, but the learning was
tremendous. Thank you again to all our participants!
The success of Etz Chaim shows that experiential education
and the opportunity to be together as families and as part of a
community, has real value and is a source of enrichment and
enjoyment for all involved!
Passover Pairings
It’s amazing that it’s already April. It has been
a busy and exciting year for Youth and Young
Adult Programs. Many new kids, teens and
young professionals have found their way into
programs at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation.
We plan to keep that trend going with our
efforts in Passover hosting this year.
Many Congregants have responded to our request for homes
for Baltimore college students and young adults who do not have a
Passover Seder to attend. We will hopefully pair up more than twenty
of these young people with a BHC family so they can join in our
observance and celebration. Besides being a great way to connect
more young people to our Congregation, it is a true mitzvah.
Talmudic rabbis said that the welcoming of guests takes
precedence over the beit midrash—the house of study—and even
takes precedence over welcoming the divine presence—the
Shechinah. It is no surprise to me that BHC Congregants are willing
to welcome strangers into their homes. Our hospitality made it
possible for the Temple to host a regional youth event of nearly 300
teens two years ago, and it is reassuring for families to again open
their doors during Passover. As we retell the story of when we were
strangers in Egypt, I am proud to know that BHC makes an effort so
that no one feels like a stranger in our community.
Perpetual Memorials
Pay tribute to those
who blessed us in life
and continue
to bless us
through memory.
BHC makes it possible to establish a Perpetual
Memorial for everlasting remembrance. A
page in the special leather-bound books
located in our Sanctuary may be dedicated
as a memorial for your loved ones. Yahrzeit
notification will be sent annually and your
loved one’s name will be listed in the
Temple Bulletin and the Shabbat Supplement.
