The Church’s leadership has made every effort to rein in <strong>the</strong> problem. Although <strong>the</strong><br />
celebrated Lafayette Louisiana brought <strong>the</strong> problem of clergy sexual abuse to <strong>the</strong> forefront, it<br />
was not <strong>the</strong> first time it had occurred, nor was it <strong>the</strong> first signal that <strong>the</strong> priesthood suffered from<br />
significant emotional and psychological problems.<br />
The tumultuous period following <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> Vatican Council in 1965 brought, among<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r things, a mass exodus from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> priesthood and religious life throughout <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
This shocking development, coupled with <strong>the</strong> rapidly dwindling numbers of students for <strong>the</strong><br />
priesthood, prompted Church leaders in <strong>the</strong> United States and o<strong>the</strong>r countries to look outside of<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own ranks for help in understanding why phenomena occurred. Noted Jesuit sociologist<br />
Joseph Fichter, S.J., produced several books, all of which looked closely into <strong>the</strong> various<br />
problems of American priests, with particular attention to alcohol abuse. 107 One important work<br />
was produced <strong>by</strong> Dr. Conrad Baars, 108 a psychiatrist. Dr. Baars presented his work as a scholarly<br />
paper to <strong>the</strong> 1971 Synod of Bishops at <strong>the</strong> Vatican, an assembly of representative bishops from<br />
throughout <strong>the</strong> world. Baars and his collaborator on <strong>the</strong> paper, Dr. Anna Terruwe, cited forty<br />
years of psychiatric practice during which <strong>the</strong>y had treated about fifteen-hundred priests. 109<br />
Baars concluded that twenty to twenty-five percent of priests in North America had serious<br />
