Ralph K. Hillquist Scholarship Award<br />

Carl Vogel<br />

University of Hartford<br />

Mr. Vogel is a student at the University of Hartford enrolled in the<br />

Acoustical Engineering and Music B.S.E. Program.<br />

In 2008, Mr. Vogel worked as a summer intern at General<br />

Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT, analyzing force response and<br />

vibrational analysis on submarine components. In summer 2007, he built and<br />

assembled Power Supply Systems for induction furnaces. He interfaced with engineers<br />

on interpretation of product blueprints relative to manufacturing process. For the past<br />

two years, he has been employed on campus by the Office of Residential Life as a<br />

Residential Assistant.<br />

Mr. Vogel has Achieved Presidents List (3.75+) every semester. He is a<br />

recipient of Emeriti Association Scholarship, Myrtle E. O‘Connor Scholarship,<br />

and the Sittard Scholarship. He is a member of the Acoustical Society of America,<br />

Tau Beta Pi-The Engineering Honor Society, and Sigma Alpha Pi-The Society of<br />

Leadership and Success.<br />

In addition to projects and coursework, he is involved in leadership positions for the<br />

University of Hartford Acoustical Society of America Chapter and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia<br />

Music Fraternity. He is also a member of the Ultimate Frisbee team and Pep Band on<br />

campus.<br />

Mr. Vogel plans to attain a position at an applied engineering corporation involving<br />

acoustics, noise, and vibration control. Additional goals include obtaining a masters<br />

degree in Acoustics.<br />

Ralph K. Hillquist<br />

Mr. Hillquist was a retiree of the General Motors Proving Ground,<br />

where he worked in the Noise & Vibration Laboratory. He authored<br />

or co-authored 25 technical papers, with two being published in<br />

refereed journals. In addition to being a Member of <strong>SAE</strong> International<br />

since 1961 and a Fellow Grade Member of <strong>SAE</strong> since 2004, and<br />

recipient of the <strong>SAE</strong> Forest R. McFarland Award. Mr. Hillquist was a Fellow of the<br />

Acoustical Society of America, a founding and Board Certified Member of the Institute<br />

of Noise Control Engineering, and a member of Tau Beta Pi. He founded the Sound<br />

Measurement Workshop in 1974, which eventually became the <strong>SAE</strong> Noise and Vibration<br />

Conference and Exhibition.<br />
