RELATIONSHIP WITH OPERATING BOARDS R-4<br />
Operating Boards are accountable directly to the BOARD and are governed by policies established by the<br />
BOARD. Operating Boards <strong>of</strong> <strong>SAE</strong> are the: Education Board; Engineering Meetings Board; Foundation<br />
Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees; Membership Board; Publications Board and the Technical Standards Board.<br />
COMPOSITION<br />
1. Composition <strong>of</strong> Operating Boards is at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the BOARD in conjunction with the appropriate<br />
Operating Board members. All Operating Board members must be <strong>SAE</strong>-voting members; unless so<br />
approved by the BOARD and stated in the Operating Board’s Relationship Policy. Composition <strong>of</strong><br />
Operating Boards should reflect:<br />
1.1 The BOARD’s Product-Life Cycle initiative in the five phases <strong>of</strong> the life cycle, which are:<br />
Design; Manufacturing; Operations; Maintenance and Reuse.<br />
1.2 The BOARD’s initiative to foster diversity into the whole <strong>of</strong> the organization. Diversity is defined<br />
by the BOARD to include, but not be limited to: culture, national origin, age, gender,<br />
technical/managerial position, race, physical ability, industry sector and geographic location.<br />
2. In accordance with the Role <strong>of</strong> the President, all other members are appointed by the President,<br />
subject to approval <strong>of</strong> the BOARD.<br />
3. Vacancies on Operating Boards shall be filled by appointment by the President, subject to approval by<br />
the BOARD.<br />
4. The President, Secretary and Chief Executive Officer <strong>of</strong> <strong>SAE</strong> shall be members <strong>of</strong> all Operating<br />
Boards but without a vote.<br />
MEANS<br />
1. The Means employed to attain Ends may not violate the restrictions imposed by the BOARD.<br />
1.1 Means refers to practices, activities, methods and ways <strong>of</strong> conducting business, circumstances<br />
<strong>of</strong> operating or any other feature <strong>of</strong> work or behavior, which does not meet the definition <strong>of</strong><br />
Ends.<br />
1.2 Limitations on Means are recorded in the BOARD Operating Boards Limitations Policy L-4.<br />
1.4 Operating Boards are authorized to use any reasonable interpretation <strong>of</strong> the language used by<br />
the BOARD in its policies.<br />
1.5 Operating Boards are expected to work cooperatively with other Operating Boards, BOARD<br />
Committees and the Chief Executive Officer.<br />
1.6 As the situation dictates, Operating Boards may participate in/or organize program <strong>of</strong>fices,<br />
virtual teams, task forces, etc., for coordinating the implementation <strong>of</strong> the Ends <strong>of</strong> the BOARD.<br />
JOB PRODUCT<br />
The achievement <strong>of</strong> <strong>SAE</strong>’s Mission and Vision as recorded in the Ends Policy established by the BOARD.<br />
