WOW! What a spectacular display of sight, sound and creativity as Singapore celebrated
her 46 th birthday. The Club also celebrated National Day with a 46 th National Day Wine
and Dine held at Tessensohn Clubhouse on 5 Aug 2011. The event was fully subscribed
by our members, their families and friends. The mood was festive with a number of the
diners dressed in hues of red and white. The diners had a good time and I would like to
thank them for their support.
Despite the hectic pace of organising about 60 social activities every month, the Social
Team is continually sourcing for new partners to organise better and more interesting
events for our members, even for the perennial Club events. They recently organised
a Community Service Trip to Batam. It was very well supported by our members, their
families, public officers and their friends. The participants even raised funds to do
community projects there. Kudos to them for their community spiritedness!
Come November, members can look forward to visiting the new Johor Premium
Outlet at Johor Bahru. It features more than 80 tenants selling international brands at
discounts of between 25% - 65% off the retail prices. CSC members will be amongst the
first to visit this new attraction by the Genting and Simon Group.
To offer our members more benefits, many of the Club’s perennial events are
subsidised. Some of such upcoming events are the Children’s Christmas Party held at
Tessensohn Clubhouse on 17 Dec 2011 and the 40 th Anniversary Year-End Countdown
Party held at Orchard Hotel on 31 Dec 2011.
The Club has recently uploaded the Club’s Constitutions, Bye-Laws and FUSION
magazines to the Club’s website in an e-book format. This electronic platform for
presenting the Club’s articles will facilitate our members’ ease of reference. If members
prefer this method of reading the FUSION Magazine, the Club will consider printing
fewer hard copies for subsequent editions to be more environmentally friendly. The
Club will continue to fine-tune this feature and conduct a survey, in due course, to seek
members’ views on this.
Tessensohn Clubhouse has completed upgrading the tennis, badminton and table
tennis courts. The tennis and badminton courts will require the players to wear court
or non-marking shoes so as not to stain the courts. We seek our members’ support and
understanding to inform their guests to abide by this rule to keep our courts in pristine
condition. The fruit machines in the Jackpot Room at Tessensohn Clubhouse will be
progressively upgraded. The machines will be changed to international standard
machines which offer exciting play. The game denominations will also be progressively
changed to low-denomination games – two cents and five cents. This will give the players
better value as players can play for a longer period without increasing their spending. The
Club is also introducing more levels of jackpot pay-outs to make it more attractive. The
Club will first upgrade the machines at Tessensohn Clubhouse. If it proves to be popular,
we will upgrade the machines at Bukit Batok Clubhouse in 2012 and Changi Clubhouse
in 2013. The first set of six international standard machines had been installed in late Aug
2011 and another set of five machines will be installed in Oct/Nov 2011. To support this
upgrading, the Club is also introducing a wide area fruit machine management system to
manage the fruit machine operations of the three Clubhouses more efficiently. The system
will also provide better returns for the players and an all-round playing experience. This
new system is targeted to be operational by end Dec 2011.
In Oct 2011, do take note of the various promotions that we are rolling out in the
various Clubhouses to celebrate our 40 th Anniversary, including the 40 th Anniversary
Dinner at Tessensohn Clubhouse on 17 Nov 2011.
The last quarter of the year is always a very festive period.
I wish all our Muslim members Selamat Hari Raya Adilfitri, our
Hindu members a Happy Deepavali, and to all our members,
do stay healthy through regular exercise to work off all those
festive treats!

Wine & Dine:
Celebrating
Singapore’s 46 th
National Day
IT was a time for old friends and colleagues to catch up,
it was time to celebrate our nation’s 46th birthday, and
what better occasion to partake of both than the CSC’s
Wine & Dine dinner? Held on 5 Aug 2011, at Qian Xi
Restaraunt @ Tessensohn, from 7.30pm to almost 10pm,
it was a rip-roaring success.
Many guests, dressed in their evening finery or decked
out in the red and white of the national colours, came to
soak in the festival spirit and enjoy the 5-course dinner.
Miniature Singapore flags were given out too, and diners
took the opportunity to wave them about as they posed
for photos.
And what fun they had! There were quizzes by the MC on
trivia about Singapore, a best-dressed theme competition,
stage game where two very game participants danced
their hearts out to dislodge ping-pong balls in tissue
boxes strapped to their waists. As always, the last item,
the grand lucky draw, was a great hit with the audience
as the countdown to the top three prizes neared. The
overjoyed winner of the first prize, a wine cooler, danced
his way to the stage, to much hilarity.
A birthday cake was also presented during which
everyone stood and delivered a toast to Singapore, with
our honoured guests on stage to lead the song and blow
out the candles.

happenings:
A Visit to Batam Orphanage
Co-organised by Civil Service Club and i’Smart
OVER the National Day weekend from 6 to 8 Aug 2011, twenty-three volunteers visited Aljabar Orphanage
in Batam, marking the first-ever community service project organised by i’Smart and the Civil Service Club.
This pioneering group was there to lend a hand to the orphanage, literally, by repairing and patching the
dilapidated roof of the female dormitories at the orphanage.
Despite the time constraints, the volunteers managed to prepare lessons, craft activities and games before
the trip. And in a testimony to the generosity of their friends and families, they also raised more than
$3,000 for the project, which exceeded their original target of $2,000.
The group set off on 6 August and reached a rainy Batam in the mid-afternoon. They then bought items
and materials at Nagoya Hill Mall and spent the rest of the day in preparations. Day two saw the team
getting all hands-on and dirty. The team members were busy knocking down tiles and scraping the walls. It
was exhausting work but everyone felt motivated upon seeing how eager the kids are to learn despite the
basic facilities. The other highlight was the time spent with the kids through song and dance activities.
On the last day, the volunteers conducted arts and craft activities, as well as a telematch game for the
children, which drew a crowd of 50 excited kids! Everyone had tremendous fun. The children also received
goodie bags from the volunteers. Their heartfelt gratitude and happy faces made the volunteers feel that it
had been a worthwhile and fulfilling experience.
This is the first such project by CSC and i’Smart, and it definitely will not be the last. The partnership with
the orphanage will last for 2 years to provide long-term sustainability. If you are inspired to contribute too,
come, join the next trip from 17 to 19 Dec! Caring and sharing has never felt so good!

The walkers in high spirits along the way.
CLOSE to 500 public officers took part in an afternoon walk at the Southern Ridges trail on 29 Jun 2011. The honour of flagging off
the walk fell to Mr Addy Suhairi Selamat, CSC EXCO Member.
Starting from Marang Road at 5pm, participants trekked through the secondary forests of Marang Trail and Mount Faber
Walk, where they enjoyed panoramic coastal views. Next, they crossed the Henderson Waves, Singapore’s highest pedestrian
bridge, that soars high across Henderson Road and connects Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park. After ambling along
the raised walkways of the Forest Walk, their 4.4-kilometre journey ended at the gardening hub of HortPark. There, they collected
their healthy food packs and participated in a lucky draw. It was indeed a fun and enjoyable afternoon for everyone!
Understandably
her winning team in the Public Service Mixed Netball Carnival
finals. Held on Saturday, 16 July 2011 at the CCAB sports
“glad for the opportunity to get together to play netball”, Ms
Chan also credited “patience, teamwork and communication”
for her team’s success, despite her members having last
