TIME passes really fast. The June school holidays are over and the National Day celebrations are approaching. 

Past Events 

OVER the past two months, the Club was a hive of activity. There was the repainting work at the Bukit 

Batok Clubhouse, as well as the renovation and upgrading of the Koi Pond Garden at the Tessensohn 

Clubhouse. In support of the Public Service Week in May 2012, the Club hosted various government 

agencies’ public officers with a highly successful series of open houses and outdoor social activities. 

These efforts have led to an increase in the public officers’ awareness of the Club’s activities and their 

interest to sign up as members of the Club. The sumptuous Mothers’ Day lunch hosted at the Tessensohn 

Clubhouse’s Qian Xi Restaurant was very well attended too and every family went home with a souvenir 

photograph of their family.

The Club also organised more than 30 social activities and workshops specially for the children of 

our members and public officers during the June school holidays. They ranged from social etiquette 

workshops to fun enrichment classes, bowling classes, baking workshops and parent and child bonding 

classes. These activities were very well supported by our members and public officers. 

Upcoming Events 

The Club will be organising the Run By The Bay 2012 at the Floating Platform at Marina Bay on Sunday, 

26 August. The morning event includes a 3-km Fun Run to enable members and public officers to have 

a fun and healthy time whilst bonding with their family. More details are available at our Sports Website 

at www.csc.sg/stargames. 

The Singing Star Competition is back to showcase the public officers’ singing talents. The 

preliminaries will commence in August. This year, a Group Category has been added to encourage 

more public officers to participate. The finalists will have a chance to sing to a 800-strong audience 

during the CSC Annual Countdown Party which will be held at Ritz-Carlton Hotel on 31 December 2012. 

Changi Clubhouse Renovation & Upgrading 

The Changi Clubhouse will be temporarily closed for renovation in mid-August this year. The renovation 

will begin in September and is due for completion by April 2014. The Club will keep members informed 

on the progress. 

Sports Website 

The Sports Website has been live since 1 July. Members and public officers can access the website to 

download event photographs, be updated on the latest results of STAR games and register for upcoming 

events. We welcome your feedback on how user-friendly and informative the new website is. 

Membership Online Payment 

The online payment for membership subscription has been operational since 1 July. Members will have 

the ease of paying their annual membership subscription online by using the credit card of their choice. 

Dynaforce – Bukit Batok Clubhouse 

The Club regrets to inform all members that Dynaforce International Pte Ltd will cease its gym operation 

at Bukit Batok Clubhouse with the expiration of its lease with effect from 1 August. Members who have 

signed up for gym packages with the gym operator are advised to approach the operator directly. 

The Club will either take over the running of the gym or continue to outsource it to another health and 

fitness operator. Notwithstanding the Club’s decision, the gym will be closed for upgrading work for 

about a month. For members who use the gym, we regret the inconvenience caused. We will update our 

members on the status through the Club’s magazine and website. 

In-House Survey 

Over the past two years, the Club has been actively upgrading the Clubhouse facilities, increasing the 

range of social activities and organising more healthy lifestyle activities for our members and public 

officers. These efforts demonstrate our commitment to enhance the value of our membership. Thus, it is 

timely to take stock and obtain feedback from our members on their level of satisfaction with the Club’s 

services and facilities. A survey form is enclosed in this month’s Fusion magazine and we urge our 

members to respond by filling up the form and posting it back to the Club. Mementos and lucky draw 

prizes will be given to members who respond.

Corporate Entourages @ CSC 

IN conjunction with Public Service Week, the Civil Service Club organised 

a series of Corporate Entourage Programmes where representatives and 

staff from different agencies visited the Club in May. More than 600 staff 

and representatives took part in the programme, where they visited either 

Tessensohn Clubhouse or Bukit Batok Clubhouse. 

During the visits, they were treated to a series of social programmes and 

workshops such as zumba dance, macaroon baking, ukulele, bread making, 

rock climbing, archery and other interesting activities, all sponsored by the 

Club. At the end of the programmes, participants gathered for refreshments 

as well as to network with their counterparts from other government 

agencies. The participants gave a thumbs up to the facilities and services at 

CSC @ Tessensohn and Bukit Batok. 

Ms Rachel Ong from NPTD (PMO) described these as “comprehensive”, 

and took part in the archery session. Ms Agnes Phang of PSD, who signed 

up as a member that day, felt the tour was well-organised, and especially 

liked the “airy, spacey” fourth floor. As did Ms Norlita Hamzah, from the 

Legal Aid Bureau (Ministry of Law), who praised the wide range of facilities 

available, especially the swimming pool. 

And they hope that the Club would organise this again for the next Public 

Service Week!

Fun Day Out 

For Knowledge Universe @ CSC 

Friday, 11 May 2012, dawned bright and sunny for staff 

of Knowledge Universe who gathered at Club CSC 

@ Bukit Batok. The company’s Staff Day was held at 

the clubhouse’s green and spacious premises: at the 

seminar rooms, art and dance studios, ballroom, pool 

area and bowling centre. As you might expect, there 

was, likewise, a wide variety of activities, classes and 

events for the participants to partake in! 

The Staff Day kicked off with both outdoors and indoor 

mass activities - a walk to the nearby Little Guilin Park 

and a mass aerobics workout at the ballroom. Among 

the other highlights were the K-pop dance sessions, 

cooking demonstrations, and the make-up and skincare 

workshops. 

There was also an exciting Treasure Hunt game in which 

teams raced against one another to uncover clues to the 

next stop! Bowling fans could enjoy themselves in both 

the fun and competitive bowling games at Westwood 

Bowl. The sessions on painting of personalised clocks 

and canvas bags brought out the artistic side of the 

ladies too! Tea breaks of sandwiches and packed lunch 

sets were given out to stave off hunger pangs. 

With many smiles and much laughter, the Knowledge 

Universe folks could be seen having a memorable day 

out. One of them, Ms Tan, there with her colleagues, said 

that it was her first time at the clubhouse, and that “the 

facilities are comprehensive” and they had “great fun!”

A Special Lunch 

For Mothers 

MOTHERS’ Day was here again! It was a indeed special 

day for mothers and their families on Sunday, 13 May 

2012, when they tucked into a special lunch for them at 

Qian Xi Restaurant at CSC @ Tessensohn. 

Besides the mouthwatering dishes, there were also fun 

and games galore! The rib-tickling repartee by MC Lay 

Cheng on stage and off stage was a hit with the audience, 

as she walked around singling out families, couples and 

children for good-humoured jokes. 

Participants who found themselves ‘volunteered’ to go 

on stage or were cajoled to do so, ended up having a 

blast, as they sung, dance and spoke candidly about their 

families. And it being Mother’s Day, the spotlight was on 

all the mothers and grandmothers, who were deservedly 

lauded for their contributions to the family. Mr Koh, who 

was there with his family, said: “It was our second time at 

this event. We enjoyed the lunch!” He added, “The MC 

was entertaining, as was the programme” – a sentiment 

shared by other participants too! 

Rounding off the event was a lucky draw, in which the 

fortunate winners walked off with prizes and hampers. 

It was indeed a memorable day out for 

mothers and their families.

MOE & HDB Bowls ’Em Over 

THE Public Service Star Games 9-Pin Tap Bowling Finals 

were held over 4 days on 3 May, 7 May, 10 May, 12 May 

2012 at Planet Bowl, Club CSC @ Tessensohn. 

Right from the get-go, Planet Bowl erupted into a 

cacophony of loud cheering and clapping as players 

urged their team mates to bowl spares and strikes. Some 

players had their family and friends out in full force to 

support them, which certainly made for a very lively 

and boisterous atmosphere. There was a constant buzz 

of activity as players marched up and down from their 

respective lanes to the giant scoreboard between games, 

anxiously checking their points and rankings. 

The Ministry of Education (MOE) and Housing 

Development Board (HDB) emerged as joint champions 

after a tussle which saw MOE topping the Women’s 

Category while HDB did likewise for the Men’s Active 

Agers Category.  MOE team manager Mr Zhou Wencong, 

who said his teams were “definitely overjoyed” at 

defending its crown successfully, credited their results 

to regular training and participation in the intra-ministry 

league as well as external events. The team spirit among 

the players was also crucial as they encouraged and 

advised one another during the games. Glenda Quek, 

from the women's champion team, echoed her team 

manager's views, “We have very good relationships with 

other bowlers within our team and we've shared many 

good experiences together.”

RULES AND REGULATIONS 

FOR ALL CATEGORIES 

1. Contestants must be a CSC member or Public Officer. 

2. Contestants can only take part in one category. 

3. All songs must be in either English or Mandarin. 

4. Contestants are to provide the song title upon registration. The Organising Committee reserves the right to 

reject any song deemed unsuitable for the competition. 

5. Previous finalists of CSC Singing Star are NOT allowed to participate in the category in which they won. 

6. Use of vulgar, sexually explicit, satanic/black metal or violent language and/or lyrics is strictly prohibited. 

7. All contestants are to dress appropriately during all rounds. Indecent exposure is NOT allowed. 

8. All contestants must inform us at least 3 working days in advance if he/she wishes to withdraw from the 

competition. There shall be no refund of registration fees in the event of withdrawal. 

9. Contestants are to remain contactable by the Organising Committee throughout the competition period. 

10. Contestants are to be punctual for their scheduled timeslots. Failure to do so will result in the shortening or 

forfeiting of their audition or rehearsal time. 

11. Contestants are to pass their own minus-one/KTV CD/VCD to the Organising Committee one week in advance 

for sound testing. The Organising Committee will not be responsible for the CD quality and CD compatibility 

with the sound system. 

12. Judges' decision is final. No correspondence or appeal shall be entertained. 

13. All participants automatically grant permission to the organisers the use of any photographs and/or videos as 

well as printing of names of groups for advertising, promotional and publicity purposes. 

14. The Organising Committee reserves the right to change any of the rules and regulations without prior notice.

HAVE you noticed the railings along the staircase linking the main annex to the tree houses at our 

Bukit Batok Clubhouse? What about the grab bars at the shower rooms of the swimming pool? 

For the more observant among the Club members and visitors, such little additions make a big 

difference, especially for the elderly ones. 

These safety measures are part of the Civil Service Club’s push to enhance members’ safety and 

enjoyment of its facilities at the Clubhouses. We are proud to receive the Bizsafe 3 award in March 

2011 and the Clubhouses have implemented the following facilities and equipment. 

Bukit Batok 

• Railings installed on staircase linking the main annex to the tree houses. 

• A staircase constructed to provide older folks with slight mobility problems a short-cut 

to the tree houses. 

• Pedestrian entrance lighted to enhance the visibility from the main road to the lift.

• Yellow stripes painted on edge of steps to certain areas. 

• Additional CCTV cameras installed for coverage of all lift lobbies, passageways, 

multi-purpose hall, swimming pool area, and car park.

PSW Cycling @ North Eastern Riverine Loop 

IN conjunction with the Public Service Week (PSW), the Civil Service Club held various activities for members and public 

officers, among which was the cycling event at Punggol Park held on Saturday, 12 May 2012. 

Aiming to promote a healthy and active lifestyle, it was also meant to encourage public officers to get together for a day of 

fun and bonding. Enthusiastic participants from various ministries, with their families, gathered at the starting point, full of 

excitement and energy while waiting for the flag-off. The participants, aged between 20 to 70 years old, were well taken care 

throughout the journey by experienced road marshals from the CSC interest group, Cycling Kakis. 

Everyone had a wonderful, albeit sweaty, morning workout and a pedalling good time! 

The delicious light snacks and nice door gifts were other perks. 

The event ended on a high note as 10 participants took 

home lucky draw prizes.

MHA Shoots Its Way To The Top 

IN the Public Service 6-a-Side Hockey Tournament, the Ministry 

of Home Affairs (MHA)’s teams from the Singapore Police Force 

emerged champions and also clinched the third runner-up placing. 

The one-day event was held at the Sengkang hockey pitch on 

Saturday, 21 Apr 2012. A total of nine teams from five government 

agencies participated in the event. 

MHA’s team manager Mr Mohd Hamizyam Bin Samion said that 

his players were very delighted with the results, and “proud of the 

achievement” to have won the championship for the fourth time in 

the past five years. He added that his teams’ weekly training helped 

build bonding and camaraderie among the players. He reiterated 

that support from their management was key to their success.

government agencies competed keenly for the top spot. In the 

closely fought final, it was the team from Ministry of Home Affairs 

(MHA) that clinched the championship title, edging out the 

Ministry of Education’s team by a single goal.

MHA team coach, Mr K Maniam Chetty, said his team 

was delighted to successfully retain the title despite losing 

some players who had to perform duties at the by-election 

that day. Training had included games in small groups to 

build rapport and understanding among the players. He 

credited the determination and fitness of the players, as well 

as the support of the manager, as key factors for the win.

CSC Walk @ Marina Promenade 

DESPITE the hot weather, over 350 officers from different government agencies turned 

up for an enjoyable late afternoon walk at the Marina Promenade on Friday, 13 Apr 

2012. Such walks are popular among ladies and senior officers, and this one was 

among the many sports activities organised by CSC to promote a healthy lifestyle in 

the Public Service. 

Participants gamely took part in an aerobic warm-up exercise under the 

guidance of an experienced instructor before setting off for the 4-km walk. Starting 

near the Singapore Flyer, they strolled leisurely along the Marina Promenade whilst 

enjoying a panoramic view of the Marina reservoir. Many of them found the walk to be 

pleasantly easy and refreshing, especially after a hard day’s work.

CSC Walk @ Punggol Promenade 

OVER 300 public officers took part in an enjoyable late afternoon 

walk at the Punggol Promenade on Tuesday, 22 May 2012. The 

walk was flagged off by Guest-of-Honour Mr Teo Chee Beng, CSC 

Executive Committee Member. 

Aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle amongst public 

officers, the walk started off from a futsal court at Tebing Lane. After 

going through warm-up exercises, the participants strolled along 

the newly completed walkway along the Punggol Promenade. It 

was a refreshing outing for everyone, especially after a workday at 

their offices, and also a good time for them to catch up with their 

fellow colleagues and friends from other agencies. The participants 

enjoyed the scenery and new attractions such as the Lorong Halus 

Wetland.

MOE Nets The Win 

THE Public Service Netball Tournament, held on Saturday, 

19 May 2012 at the CCAB Sports Hall, saw two teams from 

Ministry of Education (MOE) netting the top positions. The 

two teams edged out their fierce rivals, Ministry of Home 

Affairs and Ministry of Defence, in the semi-finals. The event 

had a good response with 24 teams from 14 government 

agencies taking part. 

Captain Yong Chin Teo summed up the event as a good 

day for MOE indeed. Though very exciting, she described the 

competition as “fierce” and she did not expect the good results. 

She credited the regular training sessions to build up players’ 

fitness and the tacit understanding among them for the teams’ 

sterling show. 

The event was graced by Dr Koh Yang Huang, CSC 

Executive Committee Member, who gave away the prizes.

once again”. He credited “teamwork and camaraderie” and 

the effort in scheduling to get the best players to participate in 

the competition as other factors for MOH’s win. Dr Theng also 

added that “the competition is a useful and necessary way to 

encourage a healthy lifestyle through exercise and games”.

1. What are your top five tips to staying healthy when travelling? 

• Visit a doctor before your trip for updates of vaccinations and other 

advice related to the area of travel. 

• Take precautions against malaria when visiting areas at risk. 

Take anti-malaria tablets where necessary. 

• Follow the local road regulations when travelling on the roads. 

Wear helmets when riding a bike, safety belts in cars and keep to 

the speed limit. 

• Drink bottled water or boiled clean water. Eat safe food. 

• Avoid animals. Seek a doctor’s advice if bitten or scratched due to the 

risk of rabies. 

2. Are there any diseases endemic to certain countries or regions 

(for example, heightened risk of dengue in certain countries)? 

• Outbreaks occur on and off in various countries and there is a constant 

need for a physician to update himself. 

• Malaria is a mosquito-borne illness. There is malaria risk in sub-Saharan 

Africa, and some areas in Asia and South America. Further information
