Welcome to the year-end festive season. This will certainly be a welcome break for
parents and their children! On behalf of the Management, I wish all our members and
their loved ones good health and happiness. May 2011 bring even more good cheer
and fortune to you and your family!
To celebrate the festive season, the Club has lined up a host of social activities for
our members to enjoy. You will be spoilt for choice with the wide range of activities.
Look out for the Children’s Year End Christmas Party (details on page 30) and the
CSC D&D Countdown Party (details on page 4). To complement these festivities, the
Club will be conducting a Grand Lucky Draw on 15 January 2011 to thank members
for their unfailing support of the Club’s activities. There are attractive cash prizes to
be won with the top 3 prizes being $8,888, $6,888 and $3,888 respectively (details
on page 8).
Tessensohn Clubhouse’s toilet upgrading will be fully completed by late
December 2011. The lady swimmers who are temporarily using the newly upgraded
men changing room gave useful feedback and accolades to the ambience and
modern facilities. Come late December, we hope the renovated ladies changing
room will be equally well-received. There will also be a mobility-friendly shower
room for the aged, and a user-friendly nursing room for young mothers. These rooms
will be constructed adjacent to the ladies changing room.
The swimming pool area together with the children’s pool will also undergo a
makeover, which will also be completed by end December 2011. The poolside
furniture will be changed: 2 new temperature-regulated jacuzzis will be installed
and the children’s pool will be livened up with water play features. The awnings
and umbrellas will be changed and an alfresco dining area above the pump-house
will be created. These upgrading works will further enhance the experience of our
members when they use the swimming pool facilities at Tessensohn Clubhouse.
Members visiting Tessensohn Clubhouse may have noticed that Bliss Cafe is
no longer in operation. Instead the Clubhouse will have a new F&B tenant, Simply
Peranakan, operating the cafe. It promises to provide sumptuous
local breakfasts and Peranakan cuisine for our members.
The cafe is being renovated and will be in operation by 1
December 2010.
There is currently a lot of upgrading works underway at
Tessensohn Clubhouse. This will persist for another 1 to 2
months. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our
members for their patience and understanding thus far
for any inconvenience caused.
It leaves me now to wish our Hindu members a
Happy Deepavali, our Muslim members Selamat
Hari Raya Haji and our Christian members a Merry
Christmas!

Mid-Autumn Festival
@ CSC Bukit Batok
THE Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration at CSC Bukit Batok
was a massive event that saw over 600 participants coming
together to celebrate this traditional Chinese festival. The
participants were made up of CSC members and their
families, students from Princess Elizabeth Primary School
(PEPS) and a special group of elderly guests from the Bukit
Batok Home for the Aged, who were specially invited to join us
in this celebration.
The essence behind this eventful night was to bring
participants from diverse cultures and generations together
and enjoy an evening of performance, food and games under
the full moon.
The night kicked off with Chinese Flute and Violin
performances by students from PEPS. This was followed by
the spirited and exuberant blend of Chinese, Malay and
Indian dance, a treat for the multi-racial audience who were at
the event. There was also a special magic performance and
lantern parade.
On the side, there were Chinese tea demonstrations and
a traditional Mid-Autumn Food Showcase, where our young
participants learnt more about this traditional festival through
their elders. Who says Mid Autumn is only about moon cakes
and pomelos?
The night ended with a Lucky Draw, where some of the lucky
participants brought home attractive prizes, while our younger
participants brought home goodie bags filled with treats.

Batok proved to be an enjoyable evening for all present, and
everyone went home with smiles on their faces. It was a great
way for people of all races and cultures to celebrate an ageold
Chinese tradition.

Inaugural Recreational Welfare Officer Networking Session
ON 3 September 2010, CSC organised an inaugural Recreational Welfare Officer
Networking session at Bukit Batok Clubhouse. 38 Recreational Welfare Officers (RWO)
from 16 Public Service Organizations attended the session to share information, ideas, and
experiences in organising activities for their own organisations. The objective of this session
was to bridge across the different agencies for the RWO to know their counterparts, as well
as to provide an insight on how CSC could be part of their resources in offering facilities
and programs for their staff needs. The idea of collective buying was also suggested to the RWOs for discussion.
It was a fruitful session judging from the feedback from the attendance:
• “Finally, a potentially good platform to harness the synergy of all the various agencies for better rates which will benefit
all public service staff in general”
• “A new initiative and a chance to meet the RWOs from different organisations and Ministries. (This a rare opportunity)”
• “Potential platform for info-sharing, economies of scale for cost of purchasing/securing events!”
• “Liked the intro by CSC and sharing of plans and services.”
• “Very useful!”

Following the inaugural RWO Networking session, CSC wishes to invite all RWOs to join the network for future
sessions. The RWO Networking Session will take place once a quarter to share ideas and brainstorm for new

Duplicate contract bridge champion
team from Temasek Polytechnic
THIS year’s Public Service Duplicate Contract Bridge
Competition was held at Club CSC @ Tessensohn. The
event attracted 6 teams from 6 government agencies. After
close to five hours of exhaustive play, it was the Temasek
Polytechnic (TP) team that came up triumphant to clinch
the championship trophy.
TP convenor Mr Lim Thim Veng said his team
members were “naturally very happy with the win this
year.” The team did not have much time to prepare for the
competition, and thus decided to focus on basic bidding
and playing conventions. Mr Lim said “There were a
good number of strong teams and the contention for the
championship title was wide open. I reckon that the team
on their best form on the day won.”

1 st Runner-up : Ministry of Health
2 nd Runner-up : Ministry of Education
3 rd Runner-up : Ministry of Defence
ON Saturday, 25 September 2010, a total of 74 participants
attended the Max Your Performance Running Clinic, held at CSC
Tessensohn. The objective was to teach proper running techniques
to help participants to meet their running goals. 100 PLUS gave an
enlightening talk on the importance of hydration, followed by a talk
by Dr Tan Swee Kheng, a Kinesiologist who is an advocate for active
and healthy living. Her talk covered a whole range of topics from
proper running techniques, to finding the right running show, as
well as common injuries and how to prevent them. Radio 91.3FM DJ
Rod Monteiro was also on hand to share his passion on running, and
what keeps him motivated.
New Facilities @ Tessensohn
Tessensohn now has a brand spanking new game zone! The Mirage Fun Zone boasts a
wholerange of fantastic arcade games, along with a new pool table. So why not go down and
shoot a few pockets when you have the free time?
The new Reading Room is now open for members to enjoy. With comfortable sofas, newspapers,
and even cable television, everyone can lie back and rest in the relaxing atmosphere.
Upgrading of Pool Cafe
The Pool Cafe is closed for upgrading to serve members better. Come December 2010,members
will have an enhanced dining experience with a new F&B operator providing a comprehensive
menu with a refreshing and appetising atmosphere.
During this period of upgrading, we will continue to provide limited F&B services. Drink and
snack vending machines will be placed at the Lobby. There will also be a temporary counter
to provide simple F&B services. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Public Service Sports Carnival 2010
This year’s Public Service Sports Carnival will be held at the
Toa Payoh Stadium on Friday, 19 Nov 10 from 2pm to 6pm!
Team up and join our fun and exciting telematches where
participants can let their hair down and have some fun! The
top team will walk away with $500.
You can also sign up for a free fitness assessment, as well
as a showcase on bike spinning. There will also be stage
performances, inflatable games and a mass aerobic workout.

Ministry Of Defence Triumphs At
Chinese Chess
IT was a race to the finish
for the 14 teams, from 8
government agencies,
that took part in the Public
Service Chinese Chess
Competition. It was held at
Club CSC @ Tessensohn on
Saturday, 28 August 2010. At
the last moment, Ministry of
Defence (MINDEF) pulled
ahead on points to win the championship.
Team Convener Mr Chow Kim Sun said that the team
was “extremely excited and happy” with the win. Despite the
members’ hectic work schedule, they still gathered for practice
sessions during lunch hours and after work. Mr Chow credited
the team for their hard work, but also acknowledged that there
was an element of luck in their games. He said, “While winning

MHA Emerge As Champion In Mixed
Netball Carnival
IT was an exciting day at
the CCAB netball courts on
Saturday, 25 Sep 10, as 33 teams
from 17 government agencies
competed in the Public Service
Mixed Netball Carnival. The
teams were drawn into eight
groups. They battled it out and
the top two teams from each
group proceeded on to the
knockout stage. It was a tough

Team convenor Ms Irene Liew said that the team was “ecstatic
and overjoyed” to have clinched the title. Due to clashes in work
shifts they were unable to train together as a team, but all of them
trained once a week in the evenings whenever possible. She
credited the team’s dedication and love for the game for the win, as
well as the support they received from their colleagues and family.

The tournament was

MOE football convenor Mr Abdul Nasir said that his team’s
performance in the tournament was the best compared to
previous years. “The players have done very well this year,
especially after coming in first place in the Futsal competition as
well,” he said. He credited his players’ commitment and desire to
win as the motivation for doing well in the tournament.

Introduction To Clay Target Shooting
EVER wondered what it would be like
to fire a shotgun? With this course,
participants will be introduced to clay
target shooting and different types
of shotguns. The two-hour course
will include a classroom lecture and
discussion before embarking on live-fire
exercises. Participants will be provided
with 12GA shotguns. As this is an outdoor sport, light
clothing is highly recommended. No slippers and shorts
will be allowed.

HYDROWERKZ is a zero impact aquatic exercise performed

Choo Choo Trek
THIS long tranquil trek will see us attempting to uncover and
follow a disused railway, taking us from Bukit Timah Railway
Station all the way to Ulu Pandan Park. This trail is wild as it
is seldom explored but we will be shaded by lush fern tree
forests and giant Albizzias for the first half of the trek. Wild
Cinnamon, Simpoh Air, Durian, Fig, Smilax, Hairy Clidemia,
Wild Pepper are just some of the plants you will encounter.
Highlights of the trek include 2 old railway bridges and
a scenic view from the bridge. We will also pay a visit to
a local shrine maintained by the nearby resident with its
wonderful herb and vegetable garden. If you are looking for
an unforgettable trek that many have not done, this is it.

The Confident Young Communicator
ISTAVIN’s Confident Young Communicator
programs will ensure that young champions
