After the initial testing of every student, a computer program will randomly select 15 students on a
weekly basis for testing throughout the year. Students testing positive for the presence of illegal
drugs will be immediately subject to the school disciplinary policy as outlined in the Student
Handbook.
Computer/Internet Policy
As a part of the tuition contract, the student and parent/legal guardian(s) agree to the terms and
conditions outlined in this policy as a privilege of the use of the computer/Internet at Saint Viator
High School during the academic year noted in this Student Handbook.
1. Acceptable Use - The purpose of the computer/Internet access at Saint Viator is to support
research and education in and among academic institutions in the United States by
providing access to unique resources and the opportunity for collaborative work. The use
of the Internet must be in support of education and research and be consistent with the
educational objectives of Saint Viator High School and not violate basic requirements of
academic honesty. Transmission of any material in violation of any U.S. or state regulation
is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to copyrighted material, threatening or
obscene material, or material protected by trade secrets.
2. Privileges - The use of the computer/Internet is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate
use will result in a cancellation of those privileges. The system administrator or supervisor
will deem what is inappropriate use and that decision is final. Also, the system
administrator may close an account at any time it is required.
3. Network Etiquette - You are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network
etiquette:
• Student e-mail accounts will not be accessed from any computer.
• Personal Web pages cannot be created or edited from school computers.
• Students may not access or edit any social networking websites.
• Do not use the network in such a way that you would disrupt the use of the
network by others.
• Do not engage in, encourage, or conceal from authorities any “hacking,”
unauthorized tampering, or other unauthorized use or deliberate disruption of
computers.
• Exercise good judgment by not making personal disclosures of address, phone
numbers, and so on for yourself or other members of the Saint Viator community.
• Exercise good judgment by not misrepresenting yourself, by accessing chat rooms,
inappropriate or illegal materials, and other sites that are not appropriate for
students at Saint Viator High School.
• Rules posted in labs are binding, whether noted in this policy or not.
4. Respecting Resource Limits - You will use the system only for educational and career
development activities and limited, high quality, self-discovery activities. There is no limit
on use for appropriate educational and career activities. Those students doing research
have priority. The printer is not a copy machine. If you need to print more than one copy,
use the copy machine that is available for students.
5. Security - Security on any computer system is a high priority, especially when the system
involves many users. If you feel you can identify a security problem on the Internet, you
must notify the system administrator. Do not demonstrate the problem to other users. Do
not use another individual’s account without written permission from that individual.
Attempts to logon to the Internet as a system administrator will result in cancellation of
user’s privileges.
6. Damages - Saint Viator High School will not be responsible for damages you suffer. This
includes loss of data resulting in delays or service interruptions. Use of any information
