The depths of the human psyche - its symbols, mysteries,
and inner myths - were described by Carl Jung in the
early 20th century.
Today, scholarship based on Jung’s insights is increasingly
embraced as essential to those who would chart a path
through the issues of our time.
Saybrook’s Jungian Studies program, founded by noted
Jungian Analyst and author James Hollis, PhD, is
designed for clinicians, scholars, and engaged thinkers
who desire to deepen their understanding of the dynamics
of the psyche – whether to add a depth dimension to
their work or explore psychodynamics as a catalyst for
personal growth.
Students will study Jung’s original work, as well as almost
a century of additional research covering a wide range
of applied fields such as developmental psychology,
literature, and the social sciences. The focus is both
practical and transdisciplinary, allowing students to apply
Jung’s basic insights, and the subsequent research of
analysts and scholars, to all aspects of human experience
and systems of modern society including the family,
business, government and law. Students can choose to
pursue an MA, PhD, or certificate.
Beginning with the Fall 2012 cohort, Jungian Studies at Saybrook
offers weekend residential seminars in both San Francisco and Houston
while allowing the remainder of coursework to be completed through
distance learning.

The news spread from The New York Times to National Public Radio and all across the Internet: Jung’s Red Book, his
psychological diary and the basis of his revolutionary theory of human psychology, was being made available to the
public for the first time.
Saybrook scholars were intimately involved. Sonu Shamdasini, who translated The Red Book into English, is a
distinguished consulting faculty member at Saybrook University. The non-profit that published the book, the
Philemon Foundation, has Saybrook faculty member Eugene Taylor on its board of directors, and Saybrook faculty
member James Hollis is a director emeritus. The Philemon Foundation’s co-president, Nancy Furlotti, is a Saybrook
student studying with Hollis.

Saybrook’s Jungian Studies program is directed by Dr. Alan G. Vaughan. A Jungian Analyst and practicing
clinical psychologist, Dr. Vaughan is a member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, where he
serves on the editorial board of the Jung Journal of Psyche & Culture and is an analyst member of the
International Association of Analytical Psychology. A law school graduate, his recent work provides
analytical perspectives on US constitutional jurisprudence, capitalism, and globalism, and he has written
frequently on the way the art, myths, and religions in the African Diaspora have emigrated across cultures.
Dr. Vaughan consults with American soldiers and their families, overseas, on issues of mental health,
trauma recovery, and optimal development. He has provided forensic psychology services to the New
York State Family Court, to the Federal Public Defender for the District of Columbia, and to the Habeas
Corpus Resource Center in San Francisco, California.
