Students named the nearby lake dock “Learning Dock” due to the many illuminating conversations and epiphanies that took place there at all hours of the day and night. 3 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT A Reason to Celebrate: We Have Reached Our $50,000 Phase I Fundraising Goal! With the incoming Spring 2011 cohort, our first four recipients of the Scholarship for Multicultural Leaders have taken their places in the LIOS program. Diligent work over the last nine months has transformed our vision into reality and brought these individuals to our door. In particular, the last few months have been extraordinary, providing us with numerous reasons to celebrate the program’s successful launch. Gifts donated by the extended LIOS community in support of Phase I of our three-phase campaign have hit the $50,000 mark, simultaneously achieving the goal of 100% participation by LIOS faculty, administration/staff and the LIOS Advisory Board. The money raised will be used to fund the LIOS Scholarship for Multicultural Leaders. I am exceedingly grateful to all the members of the LIOS community who made this possible. Having reached our Phase I targeted goal of $50,000, we are now launching Phase II of our campaign in which we will seek additional contributions from “active LIOS groups” (by location, workplace, ongoing family/I groups, etc.). The goal of Phase II is the raising of an additional $50,000. Phase III will focus on the sustainability of the program. With the scholarship program in motion, additional candidates enrolled and continued donations coming in, LIOS will be in a strong position to approach corporations and foundations for additional financial support and promotion of LIOS Graduate College. Introducing Fundraising Chair of the Advisory Board: Mitch Teufel, MA, LMHC Mitch Teufel received his master’s degree from LIOS in 1993. He owns and operates a successful private therapy practice in Bellevue, WA. He works with clients who are struggling with one or more addictions, and his specialty is helping his clients heal from lifelong struggles of trauma and shame. Along with his therapy practice, Teufel is also a business and leadership coach who works with entrepreneurs and business owners in areas of strategic thinking, product branding and marketing. He is a member of the Washington Professional Counselors Association. The building and implementation of this scholarship have already brought a new awareness and learning into the system we call LIOS. While the LIOS Graduate Program has always strived to create a diverse community of learners, the scholarship is a commitment to spearhead leadership development that will serve the larger global community. We are intent on serving, educating and developing strong community leaders who otherwise might not have the means necessary for earning a master’s degree in Organizational Systems or Psychology. In doing so, LIOS has the opportunity to build a more vibrant community of learners. And as our graduates move in the world, they bring the guiding principles of LIOS into communities that are often underserved by higher education. I am also pleased to announce that Mitch Teufel, a 1993 LIOS graduate, has accepted LIOS’ invitation to serve as Fundraising Chair of the Advisory Board. [Ed. Note: Read more about Teufel in his short bio in the sidebar.] All of us at LIOS are grateful for the many ways the community supports our ongoing work.
