Sedentary Villages In Socio-Spatial Context: Supra-Regional Organization Among the
Wintu
• General Session 7 (La Sierra); Friday, 3:45 PM
Studies of supra-regional spatial organization have rarely examined how hunter-gatherer
sedentary villages were positioned in relationship to each other. This paper explores the social
and geographic underpinnings in the spatial distribution of sedentary communities. The study’s
GIS database includes 248 early nineteenth-century Wintu villages in northern California
(originally compiled by Guilford-Kardell from Jeremiah Curtin interviews with elder Norelputis).
It includes observations on village location, the number of houses, and whether each
village was led by a chief or a headman. Notably, the study examines the spatial distance
between villages and how community size and leadership structure the spatial landscape.
