Apprentices
Travel
to the Emerald Isle
The idea of testing the air in a foreign workplace
has always appealed to Viktor Schulz.
In his third year of training, the apprentice
industrial clerk finally had the chance to pack his
case and set off for Ireland as the first SCHÜTZ apprentice to do a fourweek
internship at our facility on the Emerald Isle – the land of myths and legends.
The in-house weekly English classes
at our headquarters in Selters and our
worldwide network of branches combine
to provide the ideal conditions for
our commercial apprentices to spend
a period of their training abroad. The
European Leonardo da Vinci programme
of vocational education and training
sponsors such international placements
and is organized in Germany by the
Federal Institute for Vocational Education
and Training (Bundesinstitut für
Berufsbildung). SCHÜTZ participates in
this project in close collaboration with
the vocational training college in Montabaur.
Since 2009, SCHÜTZ apprentices
have regularly done internships at
our subsidiary in England, among them,
at the end of July this year, apprentice
industrial clerk Nicole Maciejewski.
2
Our production plant in Ireland now
also participates in this further training
programme. All participants and supervisors
so far agree that not only does an
internship intensify the trainee’s specialist
knowledge, but also that the time
spent abroad makes a positive difference
in terms of character development
and social aspects.
Interested?
Our apprentices will be
reporting live at our info
stand at the Westerwälder
Keramik-Cup tournament
in Montabaur on training
opportunities at SCHÜTZ.
From 19 to 20 January
2013, the apprentices will
be happy to tell anyone
interested in a job with
SCHÜTZ about the staff
development measures
and subsequent career
opportunities available.
IBCs in a charming Irish idyll
This was also Viktor Schulz’s conclusion:
“The chance to broaden my horizon and
see how things work in a foreign plant
was a real boon for me in my apprenticeship.”
Above all, he raves about
the great supervision and support he
received. The 24-year-old was collected
from Ireland West Airport Knock
by John Forkin, General Manager of
the plant. The Irish branch of SCHÜTZ
is situated 40 kilometres from the
airport, close to Ballina, a small
town with a population of approximately
11,000 right on the banks
of the River Moy – one of the best
salmon grounds in Europe – and not
far from Belleek Woods. It is one of the
oldest and largest planted urban forests
in Europe, with trees up to 300 years
old. Schulz learned these and other interesting
facts about his temporary home
of choice during a historical guided tour
of the town organised for him by his
co-workers.
On arriving at the plant, he was first
given an informative tour – including
instructions regarding safety and hygiene
regulations. Despite initial problems
understanding the Irish dialect, Schulz
quickly found himself chatting away
with his colleagues: “The 35 members
of staff were all very friendly, helpful
and communicative. They also asked me
lots of questions and were interested in
things like IBC production at our
plant in Selters, but also wanted
to know how we live and work
in Germany.” So as to be able to
gain a clear picture of all the work
processes in operation at the plant,
3
our young colleague was set to work in
various different departments: from
production planning and sales development
to quality control, purchasing
and sales to production. One particular
highlight of Schulz’ stay was his trip to
the Coca-Cola factory, the biggest IBC
customer in Ireland. Although he never
quite managed to spot a leprechaun
with a hidden pot of gold, as described
in Irish mythology, Schulz nevertheless
feels that his excursion into a different
culture and world of work has been
very valuable.
Going abroad – also an option
for technical apprentices
As it is possible for staff to be sent to
international subsidiaries at any time,
the apprentices who are learning a
technical trade also attend the in-house
language classes in Selters.
If they are interested in
doing so and an opportunity
arises, they may
also spend some time at a
different plant, getting a
feel for how things work
there. Bastian Dills, an apprentice
industrial mechanic
specialising in mechanical
engineering, took advantage
of just such an opportunity.
In early October, he
also travelled to the Emerald
Isle for a two-week assembly
assignment. Even if it was
rather shorter than Schulz’
stay, his stint abroad has also
left a lasting impression.
“I would like to say a big thank you
to everyone who made my visit possible
for the fantastic time I had in Ireland –
and especially to John Forkin,
Egor Cherevatenco and Mike Udall
for their great support and supervision.
I felt very much at home in Ballina.”
New Name
for SCHÜTZ in Australia
Since 24 October 2012, the three SCHÜTZ production plants in
Australia – in Laverton North (Melbourne), in North Coogee (Perth)
and in Brisbane – have been operating under a new name: SCHÜTZ
Australia Pty Ltd. Accordingly, the management now goes by the
name of “SCHÜTZ Group Pty Ltd”.
The companies were renamed to bring them into line with the
already renamed SCHÜTZ subsidiaries in Malaysia and Indonesia.
This marks the successful completion of the integration
of the former DSL Group, which began when DSL was
granted a licence to produce IBCs in 2001.
Optimal Logistics –
Challenge on the
Japanese Archipelago
From 11 to 14 September 2012, the Asian metropolis was the central
meeting place for the transport and logistics sector, while the
Japanese capital hosted the Logis-Tech Tokyo trade fair for the
tenth time.
Over the four days of the fair, nearly
130,000 visitors came along to Tokyo’s
extensive Big Sight exhibition site to get
the low-down on all the latest trends
and developments
and also to make
new contacts.
SCHÜTZ was
among the over
400 exhibitors,
with a stand
manned by a team from our Hiratsuka
plant, which is situated on Sagami Bay,
approximately 50 kilometres south of
the city of millions, and currently
operates with a 60-strong workforce.
This year’s exhibition portfolio
spanned information,
Maintaining a balance
between economy and
ecology is an increasingly
important element
in our overall concept.
warehousing and transfer systems, and
industrial vehicles, containers and pallets,
as well as tracking software. The main
theme of this year’s fair was enhancing
the efficiency of
logistical systems
in a globalised
world while giving
due consideration
to environmental
aspects. The particular
geography of Japan itself poses a
challenge where goods transport is concerned,
bearing in mind that a mountain
range covering over two thirds of the
land mass of the archipelago extends
across the entire country, which consists
of as many as four main islands.
Maintaining a balance between economy
and ecology has always played a
key role in our overall packaging and
logistical concept. The SCHÜTZ team
helps customers select the right product
for their needs – individually tailoring it to
their specific supply chain. Space-saving
logistical tool ideal for the purpose are
our ECOBULKs. These excellent IBCs can
transport 25 percent more filling goods
than conventional drums occupying
the same amount of space. What’s more,
ISO standard dimensions ensure best
possible capacity utilisation of the transport
vehicle/container. This means that
our products and services earn us
kudos even on the Japanese market –
and they have been doing so for
more than 15 years!
Ecofriendly Solutions
Please Scandinavian
Packaging Industry
“Packaging. A vital part of life.” This was the motto of the Scanpack 2012 trade
fair, which ran from 23 to 26 October. The motto was aptly chosen considering
that packaging plays a vital role in all areas of life, and that is why packaging
solutions must satisfy a host of environmental criteria. As the Scandinavian countries
have always been great champions of sustainability in Europe, we placed
the emphasis on presenting our sustainable packaging solutions to the many
visitors and trade journalists at the Swedish trade fair – inviting them to “explore
packaging sustainability.”
The trade fair at the Swedish Exhibition
Centre in Gothenburg was attended by
15,000 visitors and covered every aspect
of the industry: from raw materials
and packaging solutions to packaging
machines and services. With a production
site in Norway, SCHÜTZ naturally
could not miss being among the exhibitors
at this particular trade get-together!
The SCHÜTZ plant in Kongsvinger reopened
on a larger site in August 2011
with more advanced equipment, including
new production technology and a
reconditioning unit. With this investment,
SCHÜTZ Nordic paved the way
for asserting its position as the leading
packaging producer in Scandinavia and
Finland for a long time to come. On the
first day of the fair, General Manager Erik
Platek welcomed 70 invited guests to a
customer event at the SCHÜTZ stand,
where everyone brought the day to a
pleasant close over regional delicacies
and with a live musical accompaniment.
Before the social part of the proceedings
began, the trade public was able
to gain a good overview of the extensive
SCHÜTZ product portfolio and
global services from the many exhibits
and presentations on show at the stand.
ECOBULK exhibits this year included
the LX-C with its PE composite pallet.
The ecological bonus here: the pallet’s
timber content has been reduced to
a minimum and
the plastic used
is 100 % recycled
material. The pallet
comes with
plastic runners
and corner blocks, is exceptionally
robust and thus offers greater stability
during transport and storage.
It has almost become a tradition at trade
fairs for SCHÜTZ to showcase new solutions
for ex-zones. This time, it was the
MX-EX with its earthed plastic pallet
This time, it was the MX-EX
with its earthed plastic pallet
that turned heads.
that turned heads. With earthing plates
in the two central blocks of the outer
plastic runners, the IBC meets the very
latest safety and sustainability requirements.
In addition to ex-zones, sensitive filling
goods, such as food products, pose
special challenges for industrial packaging.
That is why SCHÜTZ has recently
invested heavily
in production
lines and processes
with a
view to ensuring
compliance with
the most stringent food standards. A
newly introduced premium standard
now offers customers certified safety
that not only covers the packaging
material used but also product properties
and production processes.
< back
Get-together at the stand: 70 invited guests ended their
day at the fair socialising with the SCHÜTZ team.
Another focus at the
SCHÜTZ stand was
one of particular environmental
relevance:
the SCHÜTZ TICKET
SERVICE. The team
explained to the public
the workings of the
global system for the
collection and reconditioning
of used
IBCs and its advantages,
one of which
is that all of the HDPE
granulate retrieved in
the reconditioning
process is reused –
in other words, it is
100 percent recycled.
This sustainable
solution for empty
containers helps to
cut carbon emissions drastically – right
in line with our sustainability policy.
The ECOBULK MX-EV FDA on display
additionally protects filling goods from
the effects of permeation. The integrated
EVOH barrier layer prevents
both penetration and leakage of gases,
so that sensitive filling goods have a
longer shelf life. A further advantage is
the high-quality, full-plastic pallet: corrosion-proof,
exceptionally robust and
easy to clean.
Minimising the risk of contamination
is also an important advantage of the
SCHÜTZ check valve on display at the
stand. It forms part of the IBC’s outlet
valve, where it prevents unintended
flow-back of the filling goods, which
may occur due to a difference in pressure
inside and outside the container, for
example, when a pump is connected.
Our extensive range of drums also
attracted a great deal of interest from
the public, and potential users were
very impressed with the variety we offer.
Many discovered new solutions to meet
their specific needs. The low tare weight
of the F1 tight-head drum and its top
handling properties – even on automatic
filling lines – found many fans. The
S-DS1 open-head drums and our steel
tight-head and steel corrugated openhead
drums were also closely inspected
live at the stand by numerous visitors.
This year, as ever, Scanpack was a
roaring success for us! Our staff
took advantage of the opportunity
to renew personal contacts with
our Scandinavian customers. At the
same time, we were able to arouse
the interest of new potential customers
with our products – so that
all in all we see a bright future
ahead for SCHÜTZ in Kongsvinger.
Good for
the Environment:
Turning Old into New!
All kinds of companies on every continent use our containers
as the ideal packaging solution for their goods. But what do
you do when a bulk container has been emptied? The answer
is simple: you get our SCHÜTZ TICKET SERVICE to come and
pick it up!
Then our global closed-loop system for the reconditioning
of empty used IBCs ensures the ecological use of precious
resources and helps to reduce climate-killing carbon emissions.
All around the world, the SCHÜTZ motto is: “Return to sender!”
SCHÜTZ is the only IBC producer to operate its own worldwide
network of 30 service stations. At each of these sites, the
returned containers are prepared for their next trip in state-ofthe-art
reconditioning plants, all of which satisfy the same strict
environmental and safety standards.
Our own MSDS (material safety data
sheet) listing over 80,000 filling goods
ensures the correct handling of every
medium. Our tight network of branches
keeps transport distances to a minimum
– and that’s good for the environment.
And good for our customers is that our ERP (enterprise
resource planning) system allows them to track the status of
their collection any time.
SCHÜTZ is the only IBC
producer to operate its
own worldwide network
of 30 service stations.
Recycling our own product
On the IBCs’ arrival at the plant, the first step in the recycling
process is to clean and recondition the cross-braces, steel
grid and pallets. All components that have come into contact
with the filling goods, such as inner bottles, valves and screw
caps, are replaced by original SCHÜTZ parts. This is how we
guarantee consistent SCHÜTZ quality. When it comes to recycling
the used plastic material gained from the IBCs, SCHÜTZ’
entire technical know-how comes into
its own. The HDPE material is cleaned
in a series of ecofriendly processes that
have been repeatedly refined over the
decades. Also, elaborate processes are
used to cleanse the water used to rid the
IBC materials of all contaminants before
returning it to the closed-loop system. The result: a singlegrade
HDPE material gained using a resource-saving recycling
method, 100 % of which can be used in the production of
components, such as corner guards and plastic pallets.
Thanks to our sustainable reconditioning of empty containers,
we use fewer raw materials and produce fewer carbon emissions
in the production of a reconditioned IBC than in the production
of new one. According to verifiable data published by
Germany’s Federal Environment
Agency, the reuse of cleaned steel
components results in a 100 kg
reduction in carbon emissions
per IBC. And that’s not all: the
recycling and reuse of plastic
components further improves
the IBC’s carbon footprint. Yet another advantage is that the
reconditioned containers satisfy the same safety and quality
requirements as new ones, which is why they are also granted
UN certification for a further five years’ use.
The system’s environmental aspects as well as its easy handling
are highly appreciated. All it takes to use the collection and
reconditioning service is a oneoff
A1 Indoor Air Quality
Germs, bacteria, dirt and all the rest simply don’t stand a chance with the multifunctional
airConomy ® surface heating system! This was the test result pronounced
by the Ruhr Hygiene Institute in Gelsenkirchen. The scientists’ official
test report was received with delight by the producers of the system at SCHÜTZ
ENERGY SYSTEMS.
airConomy ® state-of-the-art functions:
the ventilation system boasts a heat retrieval
rate of roughly 90 percent.
At last, the hygiene testers’ certificate
has arrived. It endorses the results of inhouse
tests conducted by SCHÜTZ’ own
engineers and developers, and provides
developers, architects and planners with
yet another convincing proof of quality.
As Alexander Muster, divisional head
of SCHÜTZ ENERGY SYSTEMS, puts
it: “With the hygiene scientists’ certificate,
we now have
official documentation
of the fact
that airConomy ®
satisfies the requirements
governing
ventilation and air
conditioning systems and thus also is in
compliance with hygiene directive VDI
6022, page 1. The institute certified
the system’s full compliance with the
hygiene regulations. We see this positive
result as extra motivation to boost
our efforts to promote the use of
airConomy ® in new buildings for social
institutions, such as old people’s and
care homes, and hospitals.”
The institute certified
the system’s full
compliance with the
hygiene regulations.
One system –
three functions
Whether installed in private
homes or on commercial
premises, in hotels or
gyms, the in-house developed
airConomy ® has so
far convinced users everywhere
of its many advantages.
The triple-effect
surface heating system
unites multiple functions:
it heats, ventilates and –
if required – also cools. This practical
system is easy to operate and extremely
energy and cost-effective. The central
element of the system is a hot water
surface heating unit with integrated,
controlled room ventilation. Fresh air is
fed into the room via virtually invisible
ventilation slits let into the floor. The
continuous replacement of odorous
and polluted air with fresh air lets not
only healthy people,
but also and
especially allergy
sufferers – literally
– breathe easy.
That’s because the
filters integrated
into the ventilation
system catch pollen
and fine dust particles
before they
can even enter a room. The ventilation
function also prevents any build-up of
humidity or formation mould.
Clean and efficient – a life long
The intelligent surface heating and ventilation
system has long been an innovative
standard element in the complex,
well-coordinated technical building
systems concepts of architects and
planners. And there’s another bonus
to it, too: compared with conventional
surface heating systems, airConomy ®
operates with much lower flow temperatures.
This makes the system particularly
suitable for use as a transmitter
of the energy supplied by modern heat
generators, such as geothermal pumps,
for example. The ventilation function
boasts a heat retrieval rate of roughly
90 percent, while its energy consumption
is minimal compared with the energy it
saves. What’s more, the entire system is
extremely economical to run.
100 % in-house development, research and production
SCHÜTZ Siershahn Plant:
Insights on Site for Politicians
In 2012, as every year, a 50-strong delegation of the local branch
of Germany’s Christian Democratic Party used its traditional
cycling tour to gather information about business enterprises in
the region.
A deciding factor in their choice of companies
was the innovative strength those
businesses display – something that also
consistently qualifies Westerwald as a stop
along the cyclists’ route. The programme
included three such company visits – and
one of them was to our plant in Siershahn!
There, the group had the opportunity to talk
to the top management and technicians and
to gather a number of interesting facts about
the highly topical subject of wind power,
which will be useful to them in their day-today
policy-making.
Company founder and CEO Udo Schütz
welcomed the guests, who were headed by the local CDU
branch chair, Ulla Schmidt. Michael Ortseifen, Mayor of
Wirges, the borough to which Siershahn belongs, was also on
hand to welcome the cycling politicians.
A guided tour of the just under 140,000-square-metre site in
Siershahn and the production buildings
there offered the visitors a first impression
of the plant. Siershahn is where we
have our Steel Centre and also where
our promising new windpower unit was
installed a while back. In the model
and mould construction department
equipped especially for the purpose, we
produce the original moulds for wind
turbine wings. A complex production
process then follows in which the wings
themselves are also produced on site. At
the moment, our team is working on
the prototype of a gearless, 3.2 megawatt
wind turbine with a rotor diameter
of 110 metres and a hub height of 137 metres – dimensions
the visitors found truly impressive! The first wing produced in
Siershahn has already been successfully tested at the Fraunhofer
Institute in Bremerhaven to ensure that it is capable of
handling the anticipated load levels for its projected lifespan of
25 years. One particularly interesting aspect of the local politicians’
visit was the news that very soon a prototype of this
very SCHÜTZ turbine is due to be installed at the Hartenfelser
Kopf wind farm in Mündersbach.
The delegation were then given an insight into other
areas of SCHÜTZ activities: ENERGY SYSTEMS
in Ransbach-Baumbach, IBC production and
services, and also CORMASTER production in
Selters. The cyclists were provided with light
refreshments before continuing their return
journey from our plant.
Ulla Schmidt, chair of the local
branch of Germany’s CDU
party, had invited members to
their traditional cycling tour.
