Deconstructing Criticism Five Tuesdays, 1/8 - 2/5 6:30-9:30pm $195
What’s that you say? Not quite sure where you’re going as an artist? Need a little direction,
guidance, advice, and inspiration? In this five-part class, multimedia artist and curatorial
superstar TJ Norris will guide you through the process of engaged critique. It’s simple to say,
“I love that” or, “I hate that,” and much more difficult to really express why. This class is a
great chance to go beyond semantics and lip-service and to give your thoughts some teeth.
As art can often be subjective, direction will be both creative and analytical with a focus on
discussing each student’s own creative work in progress. Through peer review, supportive
feedback, individually focused assignments, and a fun gallery field trip, you’ll develop the tools
necessary to better understand and articulate your work – and the work of others. This is a
wonderful chance to gain invaluable insight into what you’re doing as an artist and to study
with a true leading light in the regional arts scene. Instructor: TJ Norris
From The Ground Up
Three Saturdays, 1/12 11-3pm;
1/19 11-5pm; 1/26 11-5pm $185
Great photographs are not always
caught “on the fly.” They are often
developed from the ground up with
careful attention to visualization,
storyboarding, location scouting,
props, and lighting. In this threepart
class, celebrated photographer
Ann Ploeger will show you how she
“stages” conceptual photographs
from idea to finished image. You’ll
learn to be your own Creative
Director as you manage subjects
and environments to truly reflect
your photographic vision. Through
brainstorming, prop hunting,
and plenty of experimentation,
you’ll have the opportunity to
transform the way you think about
photography and the way you work.
Instructor: Ann Ploeger
A Whack in the Side of the Head Five Thursdays, 2/7 - 3/6 6:30-9:30pm $225
Join photo-luminary Cherie Hiser for another five-week, round-table seminar this winter.
motivations with Cherie’s inspiring guidance. You’ll learn to make truly personal, intuitive
photographs as you leave expectations behind and begin to explore new territory with your
art. This is a wonderful chance to study with a fantastic local photographer and to use her as a
resource and guide as you create new work. Cherie Hiser has been a photographic educator for
over 30 years. She studied under Minor White, Ruth Bernhard, and Imogen Cunningham, and
has been described as, “one of the most vital persons of our time” by Cornell Capa, Director of
the International Center of Photography. Instructor: Cherie Hiser
Developing Your Photographic Voice
Four Thursdays, 1/10-1/31 6:30-9:30pm $195
It has been said that it’s possible to be a great photographer but a terrible editor –
underscoring the importance of choosing wisely from your contact sheets. Developing an eye
for editing your work to present a compelling, cohesive photographic voice, however, can be
a challenge. This four-week class is a great opportunity to explore these issues with talented
local artist and curator Kirsten Rian. In-depth group critiques will help you to identify
themes and contexts you may have missed in your own work. Assignments based on your own
photographic style or project will help you fill gaps in your portfolio to create a more defined
body of work. Instructor: Kirsten Rian
and awareness. Each meeting will begin with a review of student work followed by a group
photo field trip. Instructor: Shawn Records
On Assignment: Central Oregon Ghost Towns Weekend of 2/1-2/3 $275
Newspace is hosting a very special two-day photographic expedition of Central Oregon’s
ghost towns with professional photographer Robert (Bob) Davis. Mr. Davis has an intimate
knowledge of Oregon’s historic settlements and special access to some of the more out of the
way sites – which will truly make this trip a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You’ll get to explore
abandoned sites rich with history and mystery – from old homes still housing faint remnants
of former tenants, to creaky jails, windswept outbuildings, to eccentric Victorian homesteads
and even the occasional tumble weed. Throughout the trip, Mr. Davis will work one-on-one
with each photographer, making sure everyone gets beautiful images. This is an incredible
