<strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> Shortens Attorney<br />
Registration Late Filing Period<br />
By changing the effective date to May 1 in Gov. Bar. R. VI,<br />
the <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> shortened the time frame from 90 days<br />
to 60 days in which attorneys on active or corporate status<br />
who miss the registration deadline can file their paperwork<br />
late and pay a late fee without being suspended. <strong>The</strong> rule<br />
left unchanged the $350 registration fee.<br />
Board on the Unauthorized Practice of Law<br />
Gov. Bar R. VII authorizes disciplinary counsel and bar<br />
associations to investigate and prosecute unauthorized<br />
practice of law (UPL) cases. In 2009, there were 155 new UPL<br />
investigations, about 20 of which initiated from board referrals.<br />
Commission on Professionalism<br />
<strong>The</strong> Commission on Professionalism administered the Lawyer<br />
to Lawyer Mentoring Program and published, in collaboration<br />
with the Clients’ Security Fund, A Consumers’ Practical Guide to<br />
Managing a Relationship with a Lawyer (p. 50).<br />

for Indigent Defendants in Capital Cases<br />
Throughout 2009, the Committee on the Appointment of<br />
Counsel for Indigent Defendants in Capital Cases continued to<br />
certify and decertify attorneys in accordance with Sup. R. 20.<br />

Office of Bar Admissions<br />
<strong>The</strong> Office of Bar Admissions supports the <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong><br />
in its constitutional responsibility to regulate the admission of<br />
applicants to the practice of law in <strong>Ohio</strong>. <strong>The</strong> office processes<br />
applications for admission, including registration applications,<br />
applications to take the bar examination and applications<br />
for admission without examination; oversees character and<br />
fitness investigations of applicants; coordinates and administers<br />
semiannual bar examinations; and organizes admission<br />
ceremonies during which eligible applicants take the oath of<br />
office.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Office of Bar Admissions also issues miscellaneous<br />
certificates relating to bar admission, including legal intern<br />
certificates for law students working in clinical programs,<br />
temporary certificates for attorneys licensed in other states and<br />
working in law school clinical programs or other legal services<br />
