So we all know that Jan is the 

dullest month of the year. We’ve all 

spent our money over the festive 

period and are feeling too fat to go out 

in public anyway. This Jan has been 

no different, as Glasgow’s venues have 

gone into semi-hibernation with no 

special events to speak of for me to 

report on. However we are lucky to 

have a number of fun weekly fixtures 

in our gay calendar regardless so for 

those of us who have been brave 

enough to shake our lovehandles 

about town this Jan, 2011 hasn’t been 

too bad so far. 

Dame Nancy Clench’s Speakeasy 

karaoke sessions on a Wed saw a 

couple of cold Jan nights transformed 

into busy and bustling party occasions 

with the venue packed out on the 12th. 

It’s not the first time that the Clench 

has performed to the masses – 

between Xmas and New Year I could 

hardly move in the place - it was so 

jammed! The only problem with 

Nancy’s night is that you never know if 

it will be busy or quiet as this new girl 

on the scene works hard to build 

herself a following. Not that she’s 

struggling to get her name out there – 

Nancy spent Xmas period DJing in the 

Polo Lounge upstairs bar. There is no 

mistaking the change in atmosphere 

upstairs at Polo with the brassy Dame 

taking control of the music and really 

interacting with the crowds. It’s only a 

shame her stint was for the festive 

period only. 

Now I won’t deny that I myself 

have stayed in a little more than I’d 

like throughout Jan and so I haven’t 

had the opportunity to check in on the 

TLC boys at FHQ. They still run 

FEMMES:HOMMES:QUEENS on a Thu 

and Passionality on a Mon. I can’t 

honestly say I observe a huge 

difference between these two nights in 

either musical style or clientele, but 

Shaun Roberts is without a doubt one 

of the best DJs on the scene so that’s 

no bad thing. 

In our Dec issue, I mentioned the 

much-heralded return of Tunnel 

Wednesdays – a night TLC brought us 

back in the day, now run by the venue 

itself. With two Weds in Dec packed to 

the tune of six hundred 

homosexualists I have to say even I 

was impressed at the draw of 

nostalgia disco! Now I’m not saying 

it’s a bad thing – who doesn’t want to 

relive the dancing days of their youth 

to an updated soundtrack of Willow 

Smith whipping her weave back and 

forth? I know I had a blast on the first 

of their reunion nights. The second 

one I wasn’t so crazy about – the 

novelty wore off quickly and the pushy 

bouncers’ attitudes left much to be 

desired. What I’d like to see is a new 

clubnight emerge, rather than an old 

one revived by a straight business 

coaxing in the queers so they can 

spend our hard-earned pink pound on

superstar DJs for the good 

straight folks on a Fri night. 

Bennets had tributes galore 

back in Dec with Cheryl Cole, 

Take That and all the usual 

suspects. They are pretty good 

for their live PAs to be honest – 

they always pick the right acts 

for their crowd. It’s nice to feel like the 

crowd you’re part of is enjoying 

themselves – I sometimes think the 

Polo Lounge peeps watch live 

performance with the eyes of 

judgement as opposed to appreciation. 

I remember Bennets had Adam Rickitt 

in a few months back, which is why 

I’m a little surprised to see the Polo 

putting on the same act a few months 

later but if we’re all honest his is a 

torso that can keep coming back 

again and again and satisfy every 

time. The Rickitt will be live in the 

Lounge over the 

Valentine’s weekend. I 

think I’ll get myself in the 

mood to ‘breathe again’ in 

the much improved 

cocktail bar Moda. 

But enough about 

nightclubs! As Madonna 

says ‘my love’s a Revolver’ 

– it’s the grown up gay bar 

for the grown up gays. The 

Sat afternoon quiz has a few 

serious masterminds competing every 

week so if you’re a bright spark you 

really must come in and teach them a 

lesson – starts 4pm with towering diva 

Vanity von Glow! The staff are the 

most chilled out going and it’s nice to 

take a step back from the hyperactivity 

of the club scene with an evening in 

Revolver. 

It’s unlike me to get this far and 

forget to mention Delmonicas! Now I 

know I was part of their festive 

lineup, but I can’t emphasise enough 

how much of a great time was had 

over Xmas! From the Boxing Day 

Panto to the Dels Factor talent shows 

there were always laughs to be had 

with usual suspects Barbara La Bush, 

Miss Liza and DJ Darren. Not 

forgetting Glasgow’s answer to Jane 

MacDonald, Miss Bella Houston who 

debuted her first full show, and 

Vulgarian superstar Vanity von Glow 

who returned to Dels for the first time 

in a year. Dels are hitting the ground 

running 

in 2011 with Nat’s Bingo and Candi 

Latte’s ‘The Weakest Twink’ on 

alternating Tues and VVG presenting 

‘The Wheel’ every Sun night. If you’re 

wondering how Dels customers 

manage to find the energy to attend 

these endless event-nights, it might 

have something to do with the free 

coffee refills Mon-Thu. Somebody 

should check their caffeine for blood 

levels!

refurbishments, and almost every 

other gay bar/club makes an effort to 

reach you online. But it isn’t just the 

nightclubs and bars which provide 

community interaction – Luke and 

Jack on Virginia Street are using their 

space to maximum effect at the 

moment with ‘Nude’ - an art exhibition 

showcasing some fabulous 

photography and a few rude nudes! 

I’m excited to see what else they use 

their gallery space for in the future, 

and for the time being the exhibition is 

free: so stop by before it closes in 

early Mar! 

As ever I’m sure I’ve missed out 

some particulars, but we are lucky 

enough to live in a city where there are 

literally too many venues to mention in 

one feature. Next month I’ll take a 

wander and check out some of our 

other hotspots to bring you the 

lowdown. But don’t you be reading too 

much into that – it’s far too cold for a 

late night wander in Kelvingrove!

HIV Peer 

Support

Around half (40%) of all people in the Glasgow area living with HIV are 

Gay or Bisexual men. Established in 2007, the Greater Glasgow and Clyde 

NHS Peer Support Project aims to provide the opportunity for people who are 

experiencing problems with adjusting to an HIV diagnosis to meet up and 

discuss things with someone else who is living with HIV on a 1-2-1 basis. 

The Peer Support Project is unique in that it recruits only People Living 

with HIV, and its aim is to provide a safe 

and structured service when it is most 

needed. 

It is true to say that although we may 

have a world class system of health care, 

it helps enormously for people to talk to 

someone else who is living well with their 

condition and may have experienced 

similar issues and problems in dealing 

with what can be a traumatic time. It is 

anticipated that meeting with another 

Positive person who is living well with 

HIV will enhance well-being and reduce 

isolation, fear and frustration.

is LGBT HISTORY MONTH!!! And our 

city has really excelled itself in top 

class History Month entertainment. 

Best event in the city this month has to 

be The Rogue Riot, which is an 

evening of live rock music from a 

variety of fantastic bands all with LGBT 

people in them! How fantastic! This is 

on from 7pm at Maggie’s Chambers in 

the Three Sisters. 

Down at Priscillas Miss Scarlet 

Diamonte is back, and with DJ Morley 

on the decks they will be hosting a 

circus-themed night on Sat 29th Jan. 

Come dressed to impress, as your 

fancy dress will be assessed and if you 

play your cards right you might get a 

treat! Also at Priscillas, Jamie Lee 

Morley is having a Karaoke and 

Request night every Mon, with drinks 

and shots from 99p! Spoiling you 

peeps. And for the ‘weekend of love’ 

some of us dread and some of us 

embrace, they will kick off on Sat 12th 

Feb with L.O.V.E. and Scarlet Diamonte. 

On Sun 13th Feb, Penny Arcarde and 

Mark Mcgregor will be hosting fun 

games and karaoke from 6pm, with 

Dancing on Ice on their massive

and see how much he’s aged since his 

glory few months in Corrie (or his gory

The crew at Habs are very kindly

we’re all being stung by tax increases. 

They have now reduced their house 

vodka, gin and whisky to only £1, with 

mixer!! VKs, Carlsberg and Grolsch all 

£1.50. And pints of Carlsberg are only 

£2.50. (both Mon to Thu). Not often 

you see a ‘sale’ in a bar!! Fantastico! 

Also, Mon at Habana will now see 

resident Penny Arcade camping it up 

from 9pm. Penny now does every Mon 

and Thu night, and the Thu night – 

Camptastic- also features karaoke. You 

know how our scene just loves a good 

sing along! They will also be starting a 

quiz night on Wed, with a secret host 

and rollover jackpot. Will this person

In grand tradition, Café Habana are 

hosting another one of their fantastic 

fundraisers, this time for an orphanage 

in North Thailand which houses young 

children living with HIV and AIDS. A 

most worthy cause! It’s a Thai themed 

night, so get your coconuts at the 

ready and help the most charitable bar 

in the city do more amazing work! They 

promise great prizes, a fantastic show 

from the wonderful Coco Chanel and 

even topless waiting staff if you play 

your cards right!!! If the prizes are 

anything like the last LGBT Youth 

Scotland fundraiser, there will be so 

many prizes it would be impossible for 

you not to win. Dates to be confirmed! 

Planet are also making their mark 

on the charity scene, with their 

fantastic fundraising activities at the tail 

end of last year raising £133 for local 

charity LGBT Youth Scotland. Planet 

have also extended their Mon-Tue-Wed 

happy days to include Thu, meaning 

you can now enjoy £1 drinks on 4 days 

of the week!!!! They also have a new 

night called Pop Tarts, with DJ Guiness 

and all your favourite pop tunes. Sun is 

now Mile High Lounge, the official preclub 

for GHQ’s fantastic Mile High Club 

with that tinker Cilla Slack. To 

celebrate Valentines’ at Planet, they are 

hosting a Fancy Dress Cupid Night, on 

Sun 13th Feb with Lala Hotpants 

breaking out the karaoke. They will 

also be hosting Fundraising for Charity 

on the night. 

Later on in the month, Velvet will 

be hosting an LGBT History Month 

themed night for women to meet 

women, or hang with women, ogle 

women, and just generally be with 

other women! The date is Sat 19th Feb, 

from 10.30pm and the Sisters and 

Brothers of Perpetual Indulgence will 

be handing out free limited edition 

Velvet-themed safe sex packs. On the 

decks will be DJ Trendy Wendy, giving 

you ladies everything you ask for. 

Up at The Regent, home of the 

best cask ales in the County, they will 

be hosting The World Famous Regent 

Bar Quiz – LGBT History Month 

Spectacular!!! As well as your usual 

general knowledge and music rounds, 

there will be a special LGBT History 

round thrown in to get your grey matter 

going!! Along with, of course, a few 

random rounds to keep you guessing. 

The quiz this month falls on Tue 22nd 

Feb, from 9pm onwards. Be there if you 

think you’re smart enough!!! Free 

nibbles at each table!! Also at the 

Regent, there will be an acousting folk 

night on Tue 1st Mar, featuring wellknown 

Scottish folk singer Ian Bruce 

plus friends. The show kicks off at 

8.30pm. 

Back at the LGBT Centre for Health 

& Wellbeing, the staff have been busy, 

busy, busy getting ready for your 

submissions to the 2011 LGBT Arts 

Festival Exhibition! The exhibition will 

be held from 25th-31st Mar, and 

they’re looking for work now from 

LGBT people which explores life as an

over at the Centre, they are starting a 

fantastic 8-week drumming course!

group of people wanting to start up a 

gay volleyball team in Edinburgh. 

They are looking particularly for 

people who have had experience and 

exposure to competitive volleyball. 

They are wanting to form a team to 

take to both local and international 

competitions. Sounds exciting!! If only

LGBT History Month is an excellent opportunity for 

organisations and individuals, local community groups 

or national partnerships to highlight their own and 

others histories in an LGBT context. It is also an 

opportunity for LGBT people and their families to tell 

their stories on what life was like for LGBT people in 

Scotland before LGBT equality was in the public 

consciousness and their continued personal and political 

struggles. 

It’s an opportunity for remembrance, celebration 

and debate and discussion around the continued 

struggle for LGBT liberation

BADGE OF SHAME - THE REPEAL OF SECTION 28 IN SCOTLAND 

A very excited Hamish Macdonell in The 

Scottish Daily Mail celebrated “one million 

ballot papers returned for Section 28… It’s a 

turnout of 25 per cent”. (All it took for a 

Freddie Mercury look-a-like to win the TV 

contest, Stars in Your Eyes!) It was of 

course no news at all; just a desperate bid to 

keep ‘Keep the Clause’ on the agenda in the 

run up to the inevitable announcement that 

they had ‘won’. The Record, of course had 

the same story, backed by the comments of 

a ‘Keep the Clause’ “spokesman” who 

returned the compliment, gasping in feigned 

surprise: “Once again the Record is first 

with the news. These figures seem 

remarkable”. 

It was bitch-fest in the papers to blacken 

the minister who announced repeal, MSP, 

Wendy Alexander’s name. In her column a 

catty ‘Old Mother Burnie’ sniped: “How 

perceptive of the Alexander parents all those 

years ago to christen their darling daughter 

Wendy - the name invented by J.M. Barrie 

for one of his characters in Peter Pan. Yes, 

very fitting indeed for someone like our 

clever Minister for Muck-ups… who not 

only makes up facts and figures to suit 

herself, but lives in a political Never Never 

Land”. When it was Gerald Warner’s turn in 

Scotland on Sunday, who accused Tony 

Blair of “ruthlessly promoting sodomy”, he 

scoffed: “Ministerial responsibility - does 

she know the meaning of the word, or does 

she think it is a technical term for a red box 

and a government car?” Wendy Alexander 

was also described as the “infantile 

minister… uncontrollable… politically 

correct… the Walter Mitty minister”. She 

had a “finger-wagging distaste for the public 

which clings to such outdated totems as 

marriage, heterosexuality or the democratic 

claims of majority opinion…” He demanded 

she “should be sent up the wooden hill 

without supper before this spoiled brat 

throws another tantrum or breaks 

something fragile - such as Labour’s grip on 

power in Scotland…” before deciding she 

ought to be “put beyond use”. 

Ron Ferguson, a Church of Scotland 

minister of St Magnus Cathedral in Orkney 

and another religious Herald columnist, 

whilst generally pro-repeal, sometimes 

floundered on the same ill-informed 

judgements, ignorance and prejudices that 

drove the homophobes. Ferguson 

highlighted a paradox when he asked: “The 

Keep the Clause campaign insists that it is 

not motivated by prejudice against gays. 

Why, then, has it chosen a noted foulmouthed 

homophobe to be its public 

spokesman?” balanced by castigating the 

peaceful gay rights group, Outrage! for 

being an “obnoxious gay militant 

tendency… as unlovable as it gets”. He 

didn’t say what he had based his judgement 

on, although very likely what he had read in 

the papers. He went on to draw from history 

an argument to support the gay struggle 

against ‘Keep the Clause’: “Now think about 

the following personages: Socrates, 

Alexander the Great, Michelangelo, 

Leonardo da Vinci, Tchaikovsky, Marcel 

Proust, Sir Benjamin Britten, Gertrude Stein, 

Virginia Wolf, and Rabbi Lionel Blue. If a 

teacher tells the truth about these randomly 

chosen gays and lesbians, is he or she open 

to a charge of ‘promoting’ homosexuality

frescoes, to be as good a role model as Jack 

Irvine, can we?) As a parent, I sympathise 

with parents’ genuine concerns, but 

whatever the question is, Brian Souter and 

Jack Irvine are not the answer”. 

Mary Rolls from Langholm had 

something to say about Ron Ferguson’s 

suggestion that there were more 

heterosexual pædophiles than homosexuals: 

“It is disingenuous to base such a poor joke 

on a misinterpreted fact. For even if we 

accept the gay claim that 10% of the 

population is homosexual, offences against 

boys still form a disproportionate part of the 

total and indeed this only reflects the 

historical preference of homosexuals. 

Greeks and Romans had their catamites; our 

Prime Minister’s wife honoured with her 

presence a national gay ball where the 

cabaret featured ‘Boy Scouts’.” David 

Paisley from Glasgow hit back: 

“…Comments about the Elton John stage 

show and his use of Boy Scouts is merely 

inflammatory nonsense, especially when 

you consider that Britney Spears, in her 

school uniform, is one of the 21st century 

society’s first great (hetero) sexual idols”. 

Former Mirror columnist, ex-Sun editor 

and ‘Keep the Clause’ champion, Jack Irvine, 

“in the interests of accuracy…” took great 

exception to Ron Ferguson in The Herald: 

“Mr Ferguson describes me as a ‘noted foulmouthed 

homophobe’, and misquotes the 

phrase from my column as ‘slobbering 

queers who want to get their hands on 

young boys’ arses’. The thrust of my column 

was that the lowering of the age of consent 

was being misrepresented by the Blair 

Government as a matter of equal rights. I 

wrote: ‘You know the tired old argument - if 

you’re old enough to get married, you’re old 

enough for a slobbering old queer to have 

his evil way with you’. I then went on to 

highlight the dangers of overly-liberal 

legislation encouraging boys barely into 

their teens being swept up into a 

homosexual lifestyle. I wrote: ‘And 

remember, the next time an old fruit gets 

caught with his hands in a 14-year-old’s 

pants, he will probably get off when he 

lisps,’ But I thought the boy looked 16’’. 

Now Mr Ferguson might have a gentler, 

more polite name for older men who 

attempt to seduce young, impressionable 

teenage males and put their health, and 

possibly lives, at risk. For the moment, I’ll 

stick to ‘slobbering queers’ until I can think 

of something more damning. For me to be 

homophobic, I would have to hate 

homosexuals. I don’t. What I do dislike 

intensely are adults, homosexual and 

heterosexual, who force themselves and 

their sexual politics on children. Mr 

Ferguson may continue to pontificate from 

his island hideaway but here in the real 

world, Brian Souter and myself would prefer 

to focus on people like Mr Peter Tatchell 

who in 1997 wrote to the Guardian 

championing a book which challenged the 

assumption that all sex involving children is 

abusive. Mr Tatchell referred to the ‘positive 

nature of some child-adult sexual 

relationships’ and concludes, ‘it is time 

society acknowledged the truth that not all 

sex involving children is unwanted, abusive, 

and harmful’. So Mr Ferguson should take 

his pick - Souter’s traditional family values 

or Tatchell’s sexual anarchy”. Jack Irvine 

busied himself building an alliance with the 

Catholic Church which was, of course, in 

turn, busying itself concealing most of the 

child abuse going on its own institutions. 

Peter Tatchell was notified and quickly 

responded in The Herald: “Does the Keep 

the Clause campaign endorse Jack Irvine’s 

smears and slurs in this letter today? Are his 

McCarthyite tactics the official policy of 

those who lead the campaign to save 

Section 28? I ask these questions because 

Jack Irvine has sunk to new depths with his 

outrageous, false implication that I endorse 

child sex abuse. He quotes selectively from 

my letter to the Guardian in 1997, in a way 

that suggests I approve of sexual 

relationships between adults and children. I 

do not. In fact, my Guardian letter stated 

categorically that it is ‘impossible to 

condone pædophilia’. While it is true that I 

support an age of consent of 14 for both 

heterosexual and homosexual relationships, 

my motivation has been wickedly 

misrepresented. I do not endorse 14-yearolds 

having sex with anyone, especially not 

with adults. However, whether we like it or 

not, 14 is now the average age of first sexual 

experience. If two people of that age have a 

consenting sexual relationship, I do not 

believe they should be prosecuted and 

jailed. They need counselling and advice to 

help them make wise, responsible decisions. 

Jack Irvine’s misrepresentation of my stance 

on these issues is evidence of the dishonest, 

scaremongering nature of the Keep the 

Clause campaign. Unless Cardinal Winning, 

Brian Souter, and other leading pro-Section 

28 campaigners publicly disassociate 

themselves from Mr Irvine’s scurrilous 

witch-hunting tactics, many people will 

conclude that such tactics have their de 

facto endorsement”. 

In a clever PR exercise, the Scottish 

programme, Scotland’s Towns: Stirling was 

cancelled, and, in its place was a timely 

profile on Brian Souter in a North Tonight 

special on ITV. Brian Souter in his trademark 

brown jacket, open shirt, red Kickers shoes 

and plastic carrier bag was followed around 

with his PR man Jack Irvine in tow. The 

Scottish Daily Mail was sufficiently satisfied 

with the programme to preview it in a story 

quoting his reactions to claims he was a 

bigot. Souter hit back saying: “I feel quite 

angry actually when people say that because 

I know in my heart that I don’t feel like that 

about any other human being and I don’t 

have any of these prejudices. So I find it 

quite insulting”. His language on the 

programme was benign. The same 

questions that popped up in interviews were 

given the same carefully scripted answers. 

The Daily Record reported how “randy 

ducks” were driving citizens of Forres in 

Moray mad with their behaviour and there 

was “FURY OVER NAKED TEACHERS ON 

NET”. These were courtesy of pupils at 

Peebles High School who had dropped 

pictures of the heads of a headmaster and 

two teachers onto the bodies of porn stars 

and posted them onto a “rogue” website. 

Referring to the boys and not the noisy 

ducks, the Record insisted: “If the culprits 

are caught they could be charged with 

breach of the peace”. 

By Fri 19th May 2000, The Record 

headline blasted: “LABOUR REBELS TURN 

UP HEAT IN CLAUSE BATTLE”. Led by the 

Catholic MSP, Michael McMahon, they were 

demanding Labour upheld “the traditional 

values of marriage” in legislation to replace 

Section 28. Following the Vatican edict, the 

MSP for Hamilton North and Bellshill tabled 

an amendment to recognise the importance 

of marriage to society. Cardinal Winning 

also voiced his support for the amendment. 

In a feature in The Spectator magazine he 

accused the Executive of declaring war on 

marriage and the family. 

Michael McMahon, who spent time as a 

parliamentary aide to Jack McConnell, 

controversially employed his wife, Margaret, 

and daughter, Siobhan in his constituency 

office and benefited from the services of an 

intern paid for by militant religious 

organisation, Christian Action Research and 

Education (CARE). The organisation paid a 

bursary of £5,000 towards a 10-month 

training programme. McMahon told 

Scotland on Sunday: “Circumstances forced 

this on me, I can’t pay staff enough to retain 

them and I’ve lost three members of staff in 

the last four years”. 

The Scottish Daily Mail found space for 

Mrs Katie Grant in the guise of a confused 

parent, pen in hand, wondering where she 

was going to put her mark on Souter’s mail 

shot. “The envelope tumbled through the 

letterbox… And there it was, my chance to 

take part in the independent referendum… 

Small, vocal pressure groups with 

fashionable agendas have hijacked the 

political landscape. The mainstream has 

become the silent and silenced majority. My 

pen now hovered over the ballot paper…” 

Would she vote to retain the clause? Was 

the Pope a Catholic…? Seemingly blind to 

the billboards that now covered Scotland, 

she continued, “if only the Executive had, 

like Mr Souter, asked us instead of shouting 

at us, the repeal of Section 28 would surely 

never have degenerated into such a bitter 

war? There is, of course, danger lurking 

here that nobody can ignore”. 

On the Isle of Lewis, the managing 

director of Isles FM, Rev Stanley Bennie was 

sacked from his morning show for playing 

the Bloodhound Gang’s top ten hit The Bad 

Touch. The song included the lyrics: “You 

and me baby ain’t nothing but mammals. 

Let’s do it like they do on the Discovery 

Channel…” and the line The Record picked 

up on: “Put your hands down my pants and 

I’ll bet you feel my nuts”.

Later, that summer, disc jockey Gordon 

Afrin was fired after he was caught 

smuggling a box of 250 condoms out to 

give away as prizes. Carol Massey was also 

sacked with Afrin for reading out 

information about the sacking on the news 

and deejay, Jim Black resigned in support 

after playing out with The Bad Touch. In 

response to Gordon Afrin’s actions, a station 

insider told The Sunday Mail: “This is Lewis 

for goodness sake… Goodness knows what 

he was thinking about…” By the end of July, 

the hapless radio station prepared to switch 

over to the World Radio Network at the end 

of its broadcast but a power surge meant 

the station instead broadcast an erotic 

channel. With his nose apparently hovering 

over a bottle of smelling salts, volunteer 

Peter McKibben gasped to Scotland on 

Sunday: “The staff were horrified”. 

After the pink, Pekinese hugging, 

authoress Barbara Cartland died, The Daily 

Record wept: “Fans of pure and innocent 

love will have to turn back to her astonishing 

library of 723 books if they want to keep 

living happily ever after… Barbara Cartland 

(provided) readers with an escape from our 

sex-driven society”. Barbara Cartland once 

said: “If you read newspapers today you see 

things that our mothers and grandmothers 

would have been shocked and ashamed to 

read. It is sex, sex, sex all the time, and it is 

not what we want”. 

The Scottish Daily Mail printed a flood of 

letters supporting ‘Keep the Clause’. 

“Section 28 prevents the promotion of 

homosexual lifestyles being peddled to our 

children. It has nothing to do with the tiny 

minority of self-pitying and self-obsessed 

teenagers who, annoyingly, label themselves 

‘gay’ in our schools”, wrote “name and 

address supplied”. 

Secondary school teacher, Avril 

Henderson from Houston explained: “I know 

that the promotion of homosexuality would 

be much more widespread and subtle than 

simply an occasional lesson. The promotion 

would stretch right across the curriculum. 

Instead of as now, for example, a modern 

languages textbook graphic showing a 

heterosexual couple into a French hotel, it 

would soon be a homosexual couple”. 

J Lynn from Inverness wrote: “It is just 

not normal family life and so it is wrong to 

impress upon children that it is normal”. 

Charles Carpenter from Sutherland 

thought the powers that be could have 

instigated a referendum, “but, instead, they 

chose to dance to the tune of the militant 

gays and their headline-hogging, mealymouthed 

liberal sympathisers… I propose 

that we reciprocate that contempt by 

slamming the door in their faces the next 

time they call to solicit our votes”. 

Charles Palmer from Falkirk helpfully 

suggested: “As the law stands, a single 

letter to the head teacher at the beginning of 

term is all that is requisite to assure your 

child’s withdrawal from sex education 

classes. Even an institution so unduly 

confident in its opinions as the Executive 

would be forced to take notice if confronted 

with empty classrooms”. 

Freda Lambert, of the National Board of 

Catholic Women, said: ‘Men kissing in 

public is a homosexual practice and we 

oppose it. It would make us feel 

uncomfortable’.” 

Trevor Royle, historian and associate 

editor of The Sunday Herald, commentating 

after a group of scholars and politicians met 

in Aberdeen to study links between Scotland 

and Ireland, wrote in The Guardian: “As one 

representative put it, given the current 

predicament within the country the 

comparison might be better made with 

Iran”. Indeed. It was, after all, the only other 

western nation to have unelected clerics 

sitting on its legislature. 

Still counting down with only “3 DAYS TO 

GO”, The Record - the paper Muriel Gray 

described in her Sunday Herald column as 

“The Daily How-Much-Worse-Can-This- 

Paper-Get-Before-The-Idiots-Start-Noticing 

Record” - reported “campaigners were 

yesterday braced for a last-minute flood of 

ballot papers in the referendum over Clause 

28”. New billboard posters had gone up 

simply demanding: “VOTE TO RETAIN 

CLAUSE 28”. 

On Thu, 22nd May, The Daily Record 

announced in over four inch high letters: 

“70% BACKING THE CLAUSE… More than 

1.2million voting slips have now been 

returned…” The Scottish Mail chipped in 

with “in the region of two million or 50 per 

cent” and three days later: “…A massive 70- 

30 margin”. With apparent surprise, a ‘Keep 

the Clause’ spokesman gasped: “If the 

Record’s figures are right, then the 

Executive are heading for a humiliating 

defeat”. The Record added: “There is huge 

public interest in the event, which will be 

covered by TV and radio stations from 

abroad”. The Scottish Mail warned the result 

would be “substantially damaging” to 

Labour as it prepared for a forthcoming 

election. (An election, comfortably won by 

Tony Blair, was just over a year away). A 

‘Keep the Clause’ “spokesman” told them: 

“…We are expecting a huge turnout when 

we announce the result next week”.
