How did you get involved in Planet? 

I was DJing as Miss Cilla Slack @ GHQ 

and hadn’t been working in management 

in a bar for a while and decided I needed 

a new challenge - Planet seemed to be 

the perfect project to undertake and 

bring it back to its former glory as 

Edinburgh’s No.1 Gay Bar. Although it 

was the main bar years ago, it needed 

new direction as it was using the old 

motto and branding from when the bar 

originally became gay nearly twenty 

years ago when it was re-named from 

the Stage Door to Route 66. 

What makes Planet different from the 

other gay bars in Edinburgh? 

On my appointment to Planet I first 

needed to reward the girls for their 

support to the venue for all the years 

and establish a nice balance of Male and 

Female customer so we could form a 

proper LGBT Community Bar and make 

sure we weren’t labelled as a solely 

Lesbian or solely a Gay Men’s bar. We 

have strived to ensure the staff we 

employ are people focused and are 

friendly, helpful and have an outgoing 

personality. We put service and 

standards first and make sure 

customers feel welcome and special. We 

are unique with our pricing as we have 

value drinks using branded spirits so 

that we promote responsible drinking 

and this shows with the low level of 

problems or trouble in the bar: we’ve 

not even had a police call this year! 

Do you have a favourite 

customer/customers? 

Well, to be honest, all customers are 

equally important and valued but I do 

love a character - someone that brings 

laughter and fun to the bar and can rub 

off on everyone else, creating my 

famous dayshift banters which can be 

such a great laugh. We have a great 

number of people who come in regularly 

and some daily, they become part of our 

family and we are part of their’s too. For 

instance, Gary is in after work each 

night meeting his friends and what a 

laugh we all get and share our stories 

and tales of what’s been happening like 

you do when you go home after work 

and tell your own family. I love the old 

values of a bar with the chat and the 

banter and everyone supporting each 

other. Gary’s earned his own name plate 

at the bar hatch - he’s earned that being 

a friend to the bar and all its staff away 

back to Route 66 days and Louise from 

the Street’s time here at Planet. Let’s 

face it Arthur Fowler had to put up with 

Pauline for years to get his own bench 

on Albert Square on Eastenders! lol 

Can you believe it’s two years already? 

I’m amazed that its only two years as I 

feel I’ve never worked anywhere else. 

But it’s great for me to have got the 

place on the journey and to the stage we 

are at now without cutting corners and 

getting everything right from the start 

without trying to do too much at once. I 

reckon we are on course although 

there’s still loads to do. Where have the 

past two years gone?? 

Tell us about the 2nd birthday 

celebration! 

We planned a formal dress event along 

with a fundraiser for the LGBT Youth so 

another organisation could benefit from 

us have a busy night and people 

celebrating the success of the bar and 

being generous to a charity within our 

community. We had an absolute ball and 

I stood back from the event half way 

through the night to see how I thought it 

was all going and was overwhelmed and 

overjoyed at the atmosphere and 

everyone enjoying themselves as much 

as they were. The Team behind me 

excelled to new levels - all made such an 

effort to dress up and ensure all the 

customers and LGBT volunteers and 

staff were looked after - going that extra 

mile for them on every occasion 

possible. Ped and Leaha looked great 

and were perfect door hosts, myself and 

Jude floated and oversaw the operation 

working or helping wherever required, 

Deejay bird played a great opening set 

with Nadine overwhelming everyone 

with her talent and Boytoy was a 

massive hit with his Cheesy Party Set 

and was flawless. DJ Fredstar was also 

the perfect host introducing all the acts, 

hosting the raffle and auction to rip the 

wax strips from Jamie Gray even one 

from his Crack!!!! £50 from that strip 

thanks grant (laughs)… but special 

thanks to our friends who came along. 

What are your future plans for Planet? 

We are already working on a hot snacks 

and a hot drinks menu and have new 

monthly events ready just to introduce 

into our weekly plans. New seating also 

is planned with a newly fitted bar to 

modernise our service and drinks 

preparation area. 

Name check your staff 

Well, my No.2 is my good friend Jude. 

We met working in GHQ and she was 

my No.2 in there so we have now regrouped 

here and may I say we have a 

great time we have but work very well 

and hard together planning and 

operating Planet. I’m probably more 

famously seen with my wee sidekick 

Jamie Gray - we met also starting GHQ 

together when Cilla first did her 

moonlight flit from CC’s to there - lol - 

we have a great chemistry and the same 

sense of humour - he is like my older 

brother- haha! I’ve got a gay lifelong 

friend, Jordan, here as supervisor who 

absolutely loves the buzz of being here 

part time and again we have a great 

friendship and this evolves into the staff 

and creates a family like atmosphere. 

There’s Mum and Dad (me and Jude - or 

is it Cilla and Jude?). Then Jamie and 

Jordan are the big brothers - all the rest 

we cherish and look after so we are like 

a massive extended family… and then 

there is another good friend of mine 

Liam who just works his way round the 

customers every night after work! 

Planet works with LGBT Youth. 

I plan events for the year and try to 

support all LGBT community charities. 

LGBT youth and transgender 

organisations often get forgotten and, as 

I started working with Jodie Fleming 

away back in the day at CC Blooms 

when I organised events in my time 

there with Dianne and Brian, I admire 

Jodie’s passion and hard work in her 

role at LGBT Youth and I love to support 

her and the team as much as I can. 

And finally, what’s your favourite drink 

served at the bar? 

I research and try and find new drinks 

and brands to keep us an exciting place 

to drink and my best find so far is the 

Agwa Coco Leaf Liqueur which we sell 

in a bomb or on its own - it tastes nice 

and is very popular. Personally I love 

our Draught Smirnoff Mojito with 

crushed ice and fresh mint - aww it is

happening in this corner of Scotland. In this 

month’s article, GMH Scotland comes to 

Grampian, Cheerz brings in more acts and 

the sad news of DJ Elaine passing away. 

Sexual Health News 

Gay Men’s Health Scotland has recently 

won the tender to provide services to gay 

men in the area. Services will include HIV & 

Sexual Health Support, outreach, group 

work and more use of social media to target 

the right people. They are currently looking 

to fill 3 part time positions in the Aberdeen 

office which will be based at 246 George 

Street. For further

Scene News 

Cheerz continues to bring you more acts 

with X Factor’s very own 2 shoes coming to 

the club very soon! As well as bringing acts 

in the local talents of Cherry Bakewell, 

Bobbie Dazzler and the delightful Miss Romy 

continue to grace the stage with quizzes, 

karaoke and Cabaret. Cheerz are always 

looking for ideas for more theme nights and 

are happy to hire out the club upstairs until 

just before its opening time so if you have an 

idea or want to host a fundraiser or group do 

get in touch with them. 

Chaplin’s gets Frantic again on 2nd June 

with Jason Cortez and special guests. 

Tickets are available at the bar or on the 

night. DJ Ross Barney continues the 

cheese, chart and dance every Thu at 

Chaplin’s too with competitive drinks prices 

and student discount to AB-Fab members as 

well. 

DJ Elaine 

As I was typing my article I heard the sad 

news that DJ Elaine had passed away. Elaine 

gave many a DJ their first chance in venues 

across Aberdeen including Cheerz Bar and 

Clubs. Steve Motion said, “I’m deeply 

saddened by the loss of a true legend, she 

gave me my first chance to DJ on the scene 

in Aberdeen one Sun night in Caberfeidh

Zone Youth 

There’s been some great news 

for five members of Zone 

Youth LGBT+ group in 

Aberdeen, they are embarking 

on a trip to Norway in Sep to 

see what the LGBT community 

is like in Stavanger and to 

spend some time with 

members of LLH Rogaland.

unlikely venue for the fabulous Miss Lexie

A New Group For Scotland! 

Another month has gone, and the 

weather really isn’t helping our scene! It’s 

been raining and pouring but still the music 

plays right across Glasgow and our bars and 

clubs have been entertaining so many of the 

gays that come out! 

It’s been a month of disappointment for 

me however. I was contacted by the staff at 

that amazing bar, Underground, to let me 

know of an incident that has happened too 

frequently for my liking. Some people have 

been putting condoms down the toilets and 

flushing - causing blockages and wastage of 

all those condoms! 

Condoms aren’t free boys! They are 

provided in our bars, clubs and saunas in 

Glasgow by the wonderful people at Gay 

Men’s Health - and they cost them not only 

our finest Sterling Pounds but time and 

effort of all the staff and volunteers to deliver 

them across Glasgow’s scene. 

It’s not just the money, or the effort that 

Gay Men’s Health put in to make sure you all 

have condoms for when you’re taking that 

boy home, that make condoms important in 

our gay bars and clubs. They are a vital tool 

in the work towards preventing HIV and 

STI’s. So boys, let’s respect the freebies that 

are there to protect our health - don’t waste 

them by vandalising toilets or creating head 

pieces and make sure you use a condom 

next time you’re having some of that bum 

sex. 

Now, on to the scene - guess what I saw 

flying above the Court Bar - it was a rainbow 

flag! We’ve definitely moved on from the 

past, and the Court Bar, with the help of Tony 

and the team are truly putting their mark on 

the gay scene as a 100% prime gay bar! 

They are putting together one hell of an 

amazing line up each week for you gays, so 

pop on in, say hi to the nice staff and enjoy 

your night! 

The Riding Room is still going strong, 

with different acts every single night. I’m so 

glad that the gays of Glasgow have 

embraced this as something new and 

exciting on the scene - because it is a great 

addition with great entertainment and the 

team behind it have 

the passion and 

commitment to be 

giving you great 

service every single 

night. Bravo!

my wee head around to Castles in the 

Sky and stuff - so Craig, of Speakeasy 

fame, whom also loves a bit of the 90’s 

has started a whole new night 

dedicated to Old Skool Dance! I went along 

to the launch of Lucid in FHQ, above 

Speakeasy, and it was amazeballs. I’ve not 

danced so much in my 

life. Get along to the 

next one, I hear it’s 

free entry - 2nd Fri of 

the month!

EDINBURGH 

So, it’s almost June – which means a 

few things! The glib hope of summer sun; 

post-Eurovision blues; the Queen’s Jubilee 

and of course PRIDE!!! Sat 30th Jun is 

Pride Scotia, which starts off from outside 

the City Chambers in the High Street 

(gathering from Noon). Don’t forget to 

remember the true meaning behind Pride! 

And tell all your friends! It’s not just a big 

old party, although who else can party like 

we can? The March is so important - if you 

don’t go on it, you don’t deserve to go to the 

party at night. Stop traffic on a Sat afternoon 

to celebrate the time when LGBT people 

came together to say enough is enough – we 

won’t be beaten, abused and discriminated 

against anymore! 

After the March, there will be a Health 

and Community Fair in the Omni Centre 

with popular entertainment outside and a 

Tea Dance in Mood. In the days leading up 

to Pride, there will also be a programme of 

cultural events which includes a Highland 

Fling in the Three Sisters on Fri 29th Jun 

with a ceilidh band for your dancing 

amusement. Check out posters in scene

Programme which will be out soon. 

The Newtown Bar are planning a huge 

Pride event, with Forces’ Sweetheart Cookie 

Mon Star! The first man/drag act to be given 

such an amazing title … Vera Lynn and 

Katherine Jenkins will also be in the NTB 

house to entertain our troops. And they will 

have the diva live girls that performed last 

year and went down a huge hit. 

And Café Nom de Plume are getting 

into the spirit of Pride with a Pink Beer!! 

Their ‘Beer of the Month’ features a Scottish 

fruit beer made with tayberries, called 

Roisin. It’s brewed by Williams Bros, and is 

perfect for Pride – as it’s pink!! So get ye to

Nom de Plume for some of that tasty nectar! 

Up at The Regent, the boys are planning 

a huge pre-Pride party on Fri 29th June – 

with Pride Punch, cheeky shooters and party 

tunes! Your host for the evening is the 

Regent’s very own hostess with the mostest, 

Miss Pour. Sounds awesome, and just the 

ticket for getting you into the Pride spirit! 

Check out both Nom de Plume and The 

Regent, if you’re after delicious food. They 

both feature awesome menus which are 

vegan and child friendly too. Plus you can 

take your dogs in! And at The Regent on Tue 

29th May, they host The World Famous 

Regent Bar Quiz; organised by volunteers 

from local charity LGBT Youth Scotland. 

This is a quiz for serious quizzers, with 6 

rounds of intense brain matter testing 

including a fun themed music round. Free 

nibbles on every table, and a £50 prize! 

Starts at 8pm. 

Planet celebrated their 2nd 

birthday party as we know it last 

month, and it was a roaring success! 

No one could fail to be impressed 

with the red carpet entrance; balloon 

arches and flames on entry! And 

inside, the face painting, black-tie clad 

waiters and plethora of entertainment 

was amazing. Nadine belting out 

some class tunes, a range of DJs 

keeping the crowds going from early 

in the evening, and a cracking buffet 

that just kept coming all night! This 

was no token effort, it was a great 

example of how to throw a party that 

keeps on giving! And as if that wasn’t 

enough, the party raised a massive £539.68 

for local LGBT charity. The manager, John, 

DJs and staff all got on board with the 

fundraising efforts and the customers gave 

generously. Huge special mention has to go 

out to the legend that is Jamie Gray, who 

got practically his whole body waxed as 

customers paid money to rip a strip off. 

Ouch, ouch and ouch is all I can say! 

The boy is a total star! Huge snaps to 

Planet and to Jamie for this mammoth 

effort, and the money will be put to 

great use for local LGBT people. 

Continuing with their local charity 

fundraising, Planet are planning a huge 

Jubilee celebration which is also a 

PRIDE SCOTIA fundraiser. On Sun 3rd 

June, The Jubilee Summer Beach Party 

will see the venue decked out in beach 

and summer paraphernalia, and to 

boost the coffers Shaz’s Barber Shop 

and Kevin, one of the bar staff who is 

also a hairdresser, will be looking for 

volunteers to get their hair cut on 

stage. You can have it shaved, 

clippered, tram lines … anything you 

please! There will also be another 

community raffle that Planet have 

become famous for, with prizes from 

venues all over the Edinbugh scene. 

Then on Fri 29th June Planet will be 

having a pre-Pride party, and launching the 

best promo ever – A MADONNA CONCERT 

TICKET RAFFLE!!! Yes, they have two tickets 

that will be raffled off in a promotion which 

will start on Pride weekend and end the 

night of the Madonna concert. All proceeds 

from the ticket promo will go to local LGBT 

charity LGBT Youth! On the big day itself, 

Planet will open from 11am-3am – 16 hours 

of non-stop partying!! Their Pride theme this 

year is ‘Sequins & Feathers’! Gordon, a 

good friend of Cilla’s, is going to be making 

awesome costumes featuring the six pride 

colours in sequins! There will be DJs all day 

in the venue, including DJ Michelle. She 

was a massive hit last year, with what was 

possibly the best DJ set in 2 years – she’ll 

be banging out the vinyl from 3-7pm and 

getting the party PUMPING! 

CC Blooms are launching their newly 

refurbed upstairs area on Fri 8th Jun! And 

they’ll be opening daily from 11am right 

through until 3am!! (12.30pm start on Sun). 

CC’s are providing the scene with an entirely 

new type of venue. Upstairs has been 

transformed into a stylish bar – with raised 

ceilings, exposed archways and the back 

window has been opened up. They have a 

full food menu on offer, including starters, 

mains, desserts, tapas and sharing platters. 

They also feature lunch and pre-theatre 

menus! Great coffee available throughout 

the day, to sit-in or takeaway. And if that 

wasn’t enough, they also have a new cocktail 

menu and new keg beers. At 11pm, the 

venue turns into the party haven nighclub we 

all know and love! 

Starting on Sun 10th Jun, Sun will never 

be the same again! The Church of High Kicks 

will be weekly from 4-9pm, hosted by 

legendary drag DJ Jon Pleased Wimmin, and 

will be all about fun! Free retro buffet, and a 

talent competition with a cash prize of 350! 

Hit them up with your best singing, dancing, 

burlesque; contortionism … whatever you 

got going on! Setting the tone for fun, Jon 

will be joined by ‘The Fabulous Kickettes’, 

who will be doing surprise poor-formances, 

egging the crowd on and encouraging you to 

let your hair down. 

Venues across the scene are going mad 

to celebrate 60 years of Brenda and her 

crown jewels! At the Newtown Bar, ‘you are 

cordially invited’ to their ’60 Years a Queen’ 

bash starting at 4pm on Sun 3rd Jun, with 

guest comedians; best of British disco; 

buffet fit for a queen and famous fag hag 

Michelle McManus (no relation to fraudulent 

gay cleric James of that ilk) will be 

performing LIVE! There will also be a fancy 

dress contest – come dressed as your fav 

royal and be in with a chance to win a £100 

cash prize!! So get yourself to Armstrong’s

The Newtown Bar’s Fire Island 

Revisited event was a huge success last 

month! So here’s some more Edinburgh 

scene nostalgia on Sat 2nd Jun, in the 

basement of the NTB – with 80’s high energy 

tunes! Also at the NTB: games night on 

Mon, Quiz on Thu, and Sun lunch is served 

from 12.30-3.30pm with live music round 

the piano in the main bar. Downstairs there 

are various men’s afternoons throughout the 

month – pants party, trackies and sports kit; 

rubber jock and leather … whatever your 

fetish is, I’m sure the NTB will cover it J 

And speaking of fetish, don’t forget the 

awesome Torture Garden will be in 

Edinburgh this month, on Sat 23rd Jun at 

The Caves. This is the big event of the 

calendar if you like things a little bit 

alternative … 

Drama sees a comeback, with a huge 

Ibiza-style reunion party, at new scene 

venue fav The Annexe on Tue 29th May. 

There will be live performances from Lexie 

Lush and Almost Adele singing all the big 

hits. DJs will be Lucky Luciano and 

Tommy Kay, with the classic Drama mix of 

anthems and bootlegs. Doors at 10.30pm! 

They’re also organising an event called 

Bootycall on Sat 3rd June at The Annexe, 

same timings. 

Frenchies themed events have been 

going down a storm, and Edinburgh’s 

oldest gay bar is just throwing out more 

and more of these awesome events to get 

you in the party spirit! They are having a 

White Weekend, commencing on Fri 1st 

Jun – with a massive White Party on Sat 

2nd Jun, starting at 8pm. White drinks 

from £2.50, with all white shots just £1. A 

free drink for everyone who comes in 

wearing white! And we’re not talking about 

your white Marks and Spencer granny 

pants, you can keep those to yourself! 

Frenchies are also starting a Sunday Movie 

Club on Sun 3rd Jun at 7pm. First movie is 

customers’ choice ‘Milk’ – and what a 

wonderful choice! Hugely emotive, steeped 

in the history and culture of lesbian and 

gay people, this film is one of my personal 

favs. Free popcorn will be provided, and 

perhaps some handkerchiefs to mop up your 

tears! For Pride, Frenchies are throwing a 

Sailor Party on Sat 30th Jun – with drink 

offers all weekend! 

Blue Moon has opened up their 

basement bar, which will now be open every 

day until 1pm! It will be operating as a pool 

bar, with a massive pool table, bar, 

comfortable seating and booths and 

conversational level music. Just the ticket 

for those wanting a calm oasis from the 

bangin’ tunes of other scene venues. For 

anyone looking for a business venture, the 

Blue Moon is now for sale – contact the 

venue for more info! A fine business 

venture, featuring a venue with a fantastic 

reputation. 

For the girls, Virgen has been going 

down a storm. Last one was 26th May, at the 

Fiddlers Elbow – the bright green signage 

above GHQ. No word on date and venue for 

their next girl’s night, but check out their 

facebook page. Virgen is advertised as an 

alternative night for girls who like girls, and 

features cool DJs and music you won’t 

necessarily find in other venues. 

And also for the girls, Beaver is back!!! 

You will be pleased to hear that there are 

three Saturday Night Beaver dates booked 

into the diary, with the next one being Sat 

16th June at The Annexe. Featuring DJs 

Trendy Wendy, The Funky Diva and others, 

this promises to be everything that Beaver 

was before – and better! 

Finally, keep your eyes peeled in the 

next issue for details of the re-launch of 

Electrosexual in Jul.

FRINGE 2012 

The Edinburgh Fringe? Oh God, 

already? Well, nearly. 

The Festival may not be running until 

Fri 3rd-Mon 27th Aug, but by the time you 

read this the full programme will have been 

announced. Top comics like Stewart Lee, 

Paul Foot and Susan Calman (pictured 

right) have had their shows on sale for 

ages – and tickets are going fast. After all, 

the Edinburgh Festival is the largest arts 

festival in the world. 

So what to see? Well, Peter Scott 

Presland’s Strip Search was a huge hit at 

the Fringe in 2011, this year it returns 

alongside Peter’s new work, Locked In - 

both at TheSpace venues. 

In a bit of a coup, the Stand have 

acquired the Assembly Rooms this year. 

The forementioned Stewart Lee is 

appearing there, as is Bridget Christie and 

the rather wonderfully titled: Molly 

Wobbly’s Tit Factory, (billed as a must see 

for fans of The Rocky Horror Show, Jerry 

Springer: The Opera, or Avenue Q). 

Over at The Stand’s traditional venues, are the talented Jo Caulfield, top satirist 

Mitch Benn, Fringe veteran Lucy Poter and Glasgow’s finest gay comic, Scott Agnew 

(who is also hosting fundraising activities in the New Town Bar again this year). 

Meanwhile, both Susan Calman and Paul Foot are strutting their stuff at The 

Underbelly. 

Just the Tonic at the Caves hosts the 

brilliant Andrew Doyle, (pictured left) after 

his remarkable sell out show last year. He 

shares a venue with the gorgeous Jen 

Brister and fabulous Mae Martin - two top 

lesbian comedians . The Boom Jennies all 

female sketch group are ScotsGay Fringe 

favourites and can be seen at The 

Pleasance 

The Assembly Hall hosts Flash Mob, 

one highlight of a very strong dance 

programme across the fringe this year. It’s 

“a dynamic show, packed with energy, as 

stars from your favourite dance reality 

shows take centre stage.” At the same 

venue are enormously popular musical 

camp double act Frisky & Mannish.

MARITAL BONDAGE: ‘TILL DEATH DO US PART’ 

Did everybody enjoy the consultation? 

Wasn’t it lovely? Nearly as good as ‘Keep the 

Clause’. Funny, it seems like only yesterday, 

not a little over ten years ago, when we were 

being subjected to the same vitriol and 

religious bullying before the repeal of 

Section 28; forbidding appropriate sex 

education for gays in schools. As their 

wealthy backer said: ‘We didnae ask for it; 

and we’re no huvvin’ it!’ No. We certainly 

didn’t. From private plebiscite to public 

consultation. From homophobic national 

billboards to leaflets through the door. My, 

haven’t we come a long way? But don’t 

worry, because if the government agrees to 

give gays the same rights as our 

heterosexual superiors, there’ll be another 

consultation on how the Churches will 

implement it! Apparently they need more 

time to prepare for equality. Whoopeedoo! 

Can’t wait. Book my flight outta here! 

With the media - particularly the BBC - 

so pro-religious, the Catholic Church has 

been able to get away with wheeling out one 

reactionary, right-wing wingnut after 

another; each pronouncement shriller than 

the last. When it came to Cardinal O’Brien’s 

turn, the neighbourhood dogs could hear 

how same-sex marriage was “madness” and 

“a grotesque subversion of a universally 

accepted human right”. It would be like 

bringing back “slavery” and “shame the 

United Kingdom in the eyes of the world”! 

And he should know. Catholic religious 

orders, Popes and clergy have all owned a 

few slaves in their time. As for 

“grotesque…” I think he’s got some neck, 

don’t you? The very idea of an institution 

lecturing us on morality - on record for 

castrating gay kids without their parent’s 

consent and concealing the world’s biggest 

paedophile ring - is about as ‘grotesque’ as it 

gets! I wonder if O’Brien practices first in 

front of his mirror; twirling in his frock, 

pouting and shaking his fists like Bette 

Davis? We should feel sorry for the poor 

darling. Most worshipping Catholics I speak 

to are just embarrassed by him. Not, of 

course, that he’s anybody’s darling. Unless 

you want to run the risk of ending up like 

that poor female British Airways steward; 

taken to an employment tribunal by fellow 

trolley-dolly, Rothstein Williams, who 

claimed that calling him ‘darling’ was against 

his religious Seventh-Day Adventist’s 

‘beliefs’. 

What the English media forgot as they 

regurgitated O’Brien’s hate speech in the 

national news was that we were already 

being regularly tortured by his garbage in 

the Scottish news.

barely dried before the BBC cameras were 

rolling again for a Catholic group, the 

Knights of St Columba, a bunch of nicotine 

and beer-stained old men from five churches 

in Nicola Sturgeon’s constituency trotting 

out another tired, bigoted objection against 

those pesky gay marriages. The Caths had 

run out of clerics. Nonetheless, these 

shameless old buggers managed to collect 

1,000 bigots’ signatures. (Beats spotting 

Eddie Stobart trucks, I suppose). I’m 

surprised all five churches mustered a 

congregation of 1,000 between them. I’ll bet 

half of the signatories were wondering what 

their dad wanted their signature for. And why 

they weren’t just leaving it up to the teachers 

to collect signatures at their school like the 

Catholic Education Service had done in 

England. Challenging them on that highly 

questionable and most probably illegal ruse, 

Catholic Voices accused the National Secular 

Society of being “sinister and illogical”. A 

statement on the Catholic Voices website 

warned that the NSS “have to argue that (a) 

the argument in favour of gay marriage is an 

argument in favour of equality; (b) those 

who oppose gay marriage are therefore 

against equality; (c) because schools are 

committed in law to upholding equality, 

therefore schools speaking against gay 

marriage are breaking the law. The logic falls 

at the first hurdle, because: there is no right 

to same-sex marriage and therefore no 

discrimination”. As the NSS smartly 

responded: “They don’t seem to understand 

what equalities are about. Women once had 

no right to vote so according to Catholic 

Voices’ argument, they were not 

discriminated against. Equality means giving 

a right to a group that is denied it for no 

good reason”. Amen to that! I would only 

add that you don’t debate or vote for 

equality. It is a right. 

Michael McGrath, director of the 

Scottish Catholic Education Service whined: 

“This understanding of the sanctity of 

marriage is divinely ordained in Church 

doctrine and underpins the teaching of 

marriage in Catholic schools across the 

world.” Another fine sounding group, The 

Catholic Education Commission moaned that 

the Scottish Government’s proposals would 

make it impossible for teachers in sectarian 

schools to teach according to church 

doctrines. This was followed up by a letter 

from the Scottish Catholic Church to its 

supposedly 100,000 Scottish Catholic 

adherents reminding them where they must 

stand on this. 

Cardinal Keith O’Brien was starting to 

look as rough as a plumbers’ estimate. It 

was time for a make-over. Now, if you listen 

to BBC Radio Four and forget to turn the 

alarm off at seven, you’re probably used to 

being woken on a Sunday with a serious 

hangover and the shrieking propaganda of 

the Religious News blasting from a tannoy 

near your ear. The BBC ditched smearing 

Vaseline on the lens that saved Lucille Ball in 

Mame and made O’Brien’s rebuke of the 

coalition’s handling of the economy - calling 

Prime Minister, David Cameron “immoral” - 

headline news. Newsreader, Edward 

Stourton sombrely suggested that this had 

come at the end of a “pretty bad week for 

the government” as if David Cameron would 

be shaken by criticism from someone now 

so universally reviled. If you have access to 

the Internet, you’ll already know how 

spectacularly it backfired with only the 

bravest apologist saluting Cardinal O’Brien. 

The NSS’s Alistair McBay took the 

opportunity to question the morality of reopening 

St Andrew’s Cathedral in Glasgow 

after a £4.5 million refurbishment complete 

with marble, specially commissioned 

artworks and 3,000 books of gold leaf in The 

Scotsman. With the Catholic Church’s 

planning to sell off some of its vast assets to 

invest in a new media office while their flock 

were being challenged by a level of poverty 

not witnessed since the thirties only 

reinforced the insincerity of the Cardinal’s 

pronouncements. 

After the Vatican’s Congregation for the 

Doctrine of the Faith clamped down on 

uppity nuns in the States for their “radical 

feminist themes” and silenced liberal priests, 

Father Flannery, who was ordered to stop 

writing articles for a magazine he had 

contributed for 14 years, go to a monastery 

and “pray and reflect” on his opinions, and 

Father D’Arcy, who was told he must get 

prior approval to write or broadcast on 

topics dealing with church doctrine, Fintan 

O’Toole wrote in the Irish Times: “…When a 

priest makes some mild suggestions that 

women might be entitled to equality, the 

church is suddenly an efficient police state 

that can whip that priest into line. The 

Vatican, which couldn’t read any of the 

published material pointing to horrific abuse 

in church-run institutions, can pore over the 

Sunday World with a magnifying glass, 

looking for the minutest speck of heresy”. 

The Catholic Church and her cronies 

were now brushing aside poverty and famine 

to divert its influence, status and 

considerable resources to make the lives of 

lgbt people even more miserable. How bad 

does it have to get before we call in the 

European Court of Human Rights to ensure 

we can have a bit of peace in our own 

country? 

There was nothing else for it… BBC’s

‘Scotland for Marriage’, (as if opposing 

‘Faith in Marriage’ somehow wasn’t). With 

the aid of 50,000 smackeroonies, they 

revved up their mobile advertising vans and 

lead their party faithful leaflet-dropping every 

house in Glasgow ahead of the council 

elections. Soon, Bashir, Mrs Allen, the Kirk’s 

Rev Hudson and Cardinal O’Brien’s mugs 

were littering the closes of every Glasgow 

tenement as they begged us to “find out if 

your local candidate wants to keep the true 

meaning of marriage”. 

Next up was Faith in Marriage, a group 

of pro-gay religionists hammering on 

Holyrood’s door to hand in a letter seeking 

assurances from MSPs that any proposed 

legislation would “protect and extend” 

freedom of religion and belief by “giving 

those religious and humanist bodies that do 

want to conduct same-sex marriage the right 

to do so”. Blink and you’d miss any mention 

of the United Reformed Church, the Quakers, 

the Buddhists and the Pagan Federation. Rev 

Scott McKenna, a Church of Scotland 

minister for Mayfield Salisbury Parish in 

Edinburgh, sagely advised: “In opposing 

equality, churches reinforce homophobia in 

society and that can lead to pain, low selfrespect 

and, in some cases, violence. In the 

end this is about people who are on the 

receiving end of prejudice and are suffering 

because of that. The cycle needs to be 

broken.” 

Personally, I don’t give a toss about 

marriage. Religious or otherwise. If I want 

superstition, I’ll toss myself off to an 

episode of Merlin. But this isn’t really about 

me. Or most of us, either. It is about letting 

the religious perform same-sex marriages 

on, well… the religious. And then, only if 

they want to. And given it’s the Humanists, 

not the ailing and troubled Caths who are 

doing most of the marriages these days, 

perhaps they should shut up for a minute 

and get some tips from the Humanists how 

to do it. That was what the Anglicans did 

before they tweaked, personalised and 

changed their marriage and funeral 

ceremonies. (Don’t worry, the irony hasn’t 

escaped me!) 

For decades we have haemorrhaged our 

open-minded youth from a Calvinistic 

Scotland to cities in the trendy South. It’s 

time for a change. Gays won’t save 

marriage, but we could help oil Gretna 

Green’s tills and marry all the same-sex 

English and Welsh couples that will be 

flocking up here because they can’t marry in 

any Church down there (or even shop on a 

Sunday). Let’s revive our marriage 

traditions; not just because it’s good for 

gays: But because it’s good for Scotland!
